Hilton’s Lincoln Plaza London hotel is FINALLY reopening post-pandemic

The Lincoln Plaza London hotel, out at Canary Wharf, is never in a rush.

Even by luxury hotel standards, the construction process saw long delays. It finally opened in late 2018.

Less than 18 months later, of course, it was closed due to the pandemic. Four years on, it is STILL closed.

Hilton Lincoln Plaza London hotel to reopen

There is hope though!

The hotel is now bookable again on hilton.com from 7th May.

It is part of Hilton’s Curio Collection, which means that you can earn and spend Hilton Honors points here as well as getting your status benefits.  Curio is a group of high-quality independent hotels which use the Hilton ‘system’ to drive bookings but which operate at arms-length and are given more freedom to run as they see fit.

We’ll need to send Rhys along for a look, because he has reviewed all of the other Curio properties in London:

The Indian restaurant, Mr. Todiwala’s Kitchen, was well regarded but is no longer mentioned on the hotel website. There is a pool, sauna and steam room.

In terms of location, Lincoln Plaza is to the south of the main estate and just south of Marsh Wall and the existing Hilton Canary Wharf.  South Quay is the nearest DLR station.

You can find out more about the hotel, and book, on this page of the Hilton website. At least for the first few weeks, it is noticeably cheaper than Hilton Canary Wharf and is arguably the best value – on a rough ‘price to quality’ calculation – Hilton Honors option in London.

Unfortunately they won’t be getting my business. They completely ignored my requests for a refund of a booking during lockdown when they were taken in the Covid crisis. No replies to emails or raising queries via Hilton. Due credit to Barclaycard Hilton for rapidly sorting it out once I had shown them all my futile correspondence. I’ll stick with the Gantry which is always a very positive experience.

Those running it then will be different to those running it now. The company that owned it, Shiva Hotels, used to own many hotels under different brands (those that were affiliated to Hilton included the Hilton T5, Hampton Waterloo, DT Excel) but they’ve all been sold off. Lincoln Plaza was the last one they could get rid of and now it’s reopening it means they’ve likely finally got rid of it.

Mr Todiwala’s kitchen seems to belong to Shiva hotels and when it sold the Hilton T5 that restaurant closed too. There was also very briefly a different Todiwala branded restaurant attached to the Hampton in Waterloo

I’m definitely going to give it a try, although anyone booking it should have a back up plan in case it’s another false start.

      • Chrisasaurus says:

Assume so although I’m assuming it’s tricky to sell a hotel with forecasted revenue based off of several years ago.

Seems Shiva were in a bit of a fire sale to raise capital to resolve tax debt. Hope someone got a bargain though it isn’t clear whom if it has indeed sold. JLL were advising as they were with the other non-central hotels a couple of years back.

Easier then buying an old building and forecasting the cost of getting planning approved, demolition, rebuilding and then hoping the rates you budgeted are still there five years later!

  • JimmyM says:

I’ve been walking past this regularly for the past few years, glad to see it is coming to life again. Very curious why such a modern property has lay dormant for so long, though! You’d think there would be plenty of demand in the area.

    • executiveclubber says:

      Isn’t it mostly apartments?

      • daveinitalia says:

It is, and they’re still in use, they have a separate entrance. It’s the entrance to the hotel and the entrance down the back which offered an alternative entrance to the restaurants that looked abandoned and dusty (they did reopen briefly in 2020 but it mustn’t have been successful enough to keep them open without the hotel business).

The gym and pool are in the basement and were also open to residents of the apartments. I wonder if this meant these facilities stayed open during the time.

  • daveinitalia says:

I’ll believe it when I see it. It would be good if you could do some digging and see what’s happened. The owners, Shiva Hotels, had sold off every other hotel they owned (including the Hilton T5) so were obviously in terrible financial shape. So presumably they’ve found a buyer for Lincoln Plaza and now they’re refurbishing it before reopening.

There’s been a number of false starts reopening here that I’ve had many bookings cancelled.

It was a nice hotel though, a la carte breakfast, nice gym, good bar and other facilities. Whether it’ll be the same under the new owners is to be seen.

  • mkcol says:

Is this an extra article today as I’ve not seen this in my email?

    • Rob says:

Yes. We’ve been a bit backlogged in recet weeks so we’ve run the occasional day with four articles and took a decision on which is the least useful to exclude from the emails.

  • Justin says:

Had a couple of meals at Mr. Todiwala’s Kitchen, one of them was a dinner hosted by Gregg Wallace which was excellent. It’s always refreshing when there’s a decent restaurant that is local and different at a hotel.

    • daveinitalia says:

I hope they find something of the same quality to replace it. The first time in Mr Todiwala’s Kitchen in the Hilton T5 I met the man himself. Really friendly, very knowledgeable about food and it’s so nice to know the person behind the restaurant is still actively involved in it.

I’ve looked at the hotel page and it’s not just Mr Todiwala’s that’s missing, Jack Speak, the cocktail bar, is also not listed. It’ll be interesting to see what they do with those spaces.

  • B Murphy-Ryan says:

Stayed in 2018 before closed again – was actually a decent setup, lovely rooms and very comfortable. Would recommend – BUT that was 6 years ago, hope they have been maintaining facilities in the meantime

    • daveinitalia says:

I can’t say how well the rooms have been maintained during the closure but there was always security on site so hopefully it’s been looked after.

  • Tetly1967 says:

I have booked two nights in September, significantly cheaper than the others
