Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

NEW: Avios transfers from Amex Membership Rewards are now INSTANT if ….

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

American Express Membership Rewards has a new transfer partner – Qatar Airways Privilege Club.

On the face of it, you might think that this isn’t hugely exciting. After all, ever since Qatar Airways adopted Avios, you can link your British Airways Executive Club account to a Qatar Airways Privilege Club account and move Avios back and forth.

(This article shows you how to link your British Airways and Qatar Airways accounts.)

However ….

Transfers from American Express Membership Rewards to Qatar Airways Privilege Club Avios are instant.

Transfers from American Express Membership Rewards to British Airways Executive Club Avios happen overnight, and the Amex website actually says it can take three days.

This is a huge improvement if you need Avios NOW because the reward flight you want has just appeared.

Instead of waiting overnight, when the seat could be gone, you can transfer Membership Rewards points to Qatar Airways Privilege Club and they will appear immediately.

From there, you can instantly move them into your linked British Airways Executive Club account. Job done, in about two minutes total. I’ve tested it and it works.

There is one other difference between moving Amex points to Qatar Airways vs British Airways. The minimum transfer to Privilege Club is just 500 Membership Rewards points, and then in multiples of 500. The minimum transfer to Executive Club is 1,000 Membership Rewards points, and then in multiples of 500.

We may see Qatar Airways transfer bonuses in future

Qatar Airways has been offering transfer bonuses in other countries where it has rolled out its American Express Membership Rewards partnership.

Whilst it may annoy British Airways if it did one here, I can imagine Qatar Airways being cheeky and potentially giving it a go at some point.

I’d love to know if Qatar Airways would make a profit if you move points from American Express to Privilege Club during a transfer bonus (Amex pays Qatar Airways) and the Avios are immediately transferred to British Airways (Qatar Airways pays British Airways) ….!

One minor downside ….

The only downside of moving Membership Rewards points to Qatar Airways Privilege Club and onto British Airways Executive Club is that the Avios don’t qualify for Avios Balance Boost.

We explain what Avios Balance Boost is in this article. If you don’t use it, don’t worry about it.

Basically …. Membership Rewards transfers directly into BA can be ‘boosted’ via Balance Boost. Transfers from Qatar Airways into BA cannot be boosted.

A handy tip

You may want to go to the Membership Rewards website and link your Qatar Airways Privilege Club account. You do this by going to the Qatar Airways transfer page and following the linkage instructions.

By doing this now, you ensure that there are no security delays when you come to making a transfer in the future.

Whenever Amex says that transfers are ‘instant’ (as they are to Delta, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Marriott) there is always a caveat over first time transfers to avoid potential fraud.

Now if only I could get Qatar and BA to link together.

Says there is a name difference.

    There isn’t.

    • dst87 says:

Oh I had great trouble linking for the same reason and eventually spoke to their live chat. I think we ultimately worked out that my middle name was part of my first name with BA for some reason and that was causing the discrepancy.

Thankfully I was new to Qatar so I just deleted the account and started over, but anyone with an established account would need to contact their support and provide ID etc to make the change to an existing account. Real pain!

  • Mr. AC says:

Isn’t there a huge downside – you won’t be able to boost the transfer if you go MR -> Qatar -> BA as opposed to MR -> BA?

    • Willmo says:

      Very good point.
      (no pun intended)

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

      Where is the “huge” downside???

Even in the (really very niche) case that you MUST boost 100% of your intended transfer balance and have ZERO boostable Avios from other sources…

If Avios Boost allows you to buy a finite amount at 0.92p. There are other ways to buy/earn a finite amount of Avios at or around 1.1p (which you can then in turn boost!). If you have a 30% transfer bonus (for example) to Qata from Amex, then you’re still on a significantly better deal overall for the same amount of Avios by transferring to Qatar and topping up elsewhere.

  • gustavo says:

If you combine avios from Qatar to BA, is that amount still eligible for avios boost?

  • tony says:

So I guess it also makes sense to transfer 1 mr or whatever over at the point of linking as that’s where the delay will happen the first time round, not just matching off the numbers

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

Only thing making me wary of doing this is in case there’s some sort of promo for your FIRST Amex->Qatar conversion.

    • Rob says:

In my experience you just need to link to clear the security checks.

    • duggie1982 says:

Minimum of 500 points but yeah if you want to make sure you get instant transfer going forward it could be a good idea

  • Jimmy says:

Of people doing the maths on boost? Buying at 0.92 is great no doubt and with 241 brilliant thanks to I class.

  • Lee says:

Just did a 500 points trial transfer. It’s been 15 mins still no sign of the avios although account statues showing accepted.

  • Denis says:

I struggle linking my BA acc as Qatar website shows “The maximum simultaneous links has been reached”. I have never linked my BA acc before. Go figure…

    • FatherOfFour says:

Is the message at BA end or elsewhere? Might it be linked to Award Wallet, Barclaycard Avios etc? Perhaps they all count as simultaneous links

      • FatherOfFour says:

Sorry, see upu sat the Qatar website… but point still stands, perhaps BA has a maximum links, though I expect others here would have encountered this by now

    • Mzungu says:

I had exactly the same – didn’t bother trying to fix it, but I’m now looking at a Qatar redemption, so I called them. I had to persist, ignoring their daft suggestions first, it turned out that I had an old QR account which is linked to my BAEC. Trouble is, QR have marked this account suspended (don’t know why). They have sent a message to the ‘back office team’ asking them to sort it and contact me – I’m not holding my breath…

  • @alastairtravel says:

Just excellent news this for most I think. Makes have a card with MR more valuable.
Think the behaviour change will be more people will hold MR rather than transferring to Avios unless they definitely need them.

    • BJ says:

Why does it make it more valuable other than making the avios transfer a few minutes faster?

      • Rob says:

It’s not minutes, it’s potentially 24 hours faster.

Given that the Barbados ‘Avios only’ flight sold out in 20 minutes in Club …..
