NEW: Book Virgin Voyages UK cruises from just 85,000 Virgin Points

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Virgin Red has launched redemptions for the first Virgin Voyages cruises from the UK which are setting sail this summer.

Options start at just 85,000 Virgin Points for a three night cruise for two people.

As these cruises all start in Portsmouth, you don’t need to worry about the costs of expensive peak season positioning flights to Athens or Barcelona. This has been an issue for some people with the Mediterranean redemptions, which are still bookable.

7 nights Virgin Voyages full board cruises for two from 120,000 Virgin Points

Each cruise is full board. All your meals, soft drinks, fitness classes, entertainment etc are included – even tips. You only pay for alcoholic drinks.

Remember that these are adults only trips.

A lot of HfP readers have jumped on these redemptions in the past few years. The feedback in our forum has been fantastic – from young and old, from those who wanted a bit of a party to those who simply wanted a quiet break after a tricky couple of years. There is a Virgin Voyages master thread in our forum for your Q&A.

If you are short of Virgin Points, options include:

  • transferring Tesco Clubcard points (should happen overnight)
  • transferring American Express Membership Rewards points (should be instant)
  • transferring Heathrow Rewards points (not clear about timeframe)

You can transfer points from another Virgin Points account to yours for a flat £10 fee. However, if both of you are travelling then the call centre should be able to take the points from two accounts.

Here are your options, all of which depart from Portsmouth:

Things to know

There are a few things to know before you book:

  • you need to get to and from Portsmouth at your own expense
  • the cruises are adults only
  • the cost is per cabin, sleeping up to two – there is no discount for single occupancy
  • cabins are Central Sea Terrace or The Sea Terrace on Resilient Lady, and will be determined by Virgin Voyages according to availability
  • it can take up to three working days to receive your Access Code once you have redeemed your points – once you have the code, you book via the Virgin Voyages website and use the code at the point of payment
  • Access Codes are transferable and do not need to used by the person who redeemed the points

Note that there is no guarantee that you can book the exact cruise you want – you need to make sure the cruise in question is still available for cash.

If you want to find out more about Virgin Voyages, here is our report from an afternoon on ‘Scarlet Lady’, the first ship in the fleet.

If you want to top up your balance by buying Virgin Points, the link is here.

You can book via the Virgin Red app or online. Read the instructions carefully before booking – you need to check there is still a relevant cabin available for cash before ordering your booking code, and once it arrives you should book ASAP before the availability disappears. Based on last year, you should be offered the chance to upgrade your cabin for cash nearer the time of departure if you want something larger.

PS. If you want to build up a Virgin Points balance for a similar redemption next year, assuming the deals return, take a look at the generous sign-up bonuses available on the Virgin Atlantic credit cards.

How come do you think ships are selling out? I’m seeing ads for their cruises everywhere online. Why would they spend so much ad money if they already sold out?

    • Rhys says:

I haven’t seen ads online, so you’re probably their target market 🙂

  • Dragonlady says:

Not floating my boat at all . A chug across the channel and back for 3 days isn’t my definition of a cruise ( more like a ferry ) and certainly not worth the daft miles rate being quoted (and who on earth would pay £2000 plus for this as a cash rate ??). Ridiculous .
My cash fare for a third med cruise later in the year ( plus included bar tab ) makes this seem crazily overpriced .

  • Ladyshopper says:

Email today from Travelzoo. Week long med cruises on Scarlet Lady through the summer months for £999 in a balcony cabin. This also includes flights.

I’d say that’s a pretty good deal for peak summer, especially including flights. I reckon they’re struggling to fill up their ships selling them at this price.

Offer ends tomorrow though according to the details.

    • JohnG says:

Should probably check the email more carefully… It’s £999pp if you’re booking for two (though it does include flights).

      • Ladyshopper says:

Sorry, I missed pp off my original comment. Would have thought that most people would have assumed that anyway though to be honest.

    • Dragonlady says:

@Ladyshopper . I had the same offer from Iglu cruises . If I wasn’t committed to a big trip over the summer and an already booked for cash VV in the autumn I’d have considered it as including airfares it’s dirt cheap ( even if the itineraries aren’t inspiring ).
I’ve said it before – I can’t see VV surviving in Europe in the long term and down under didn’t work either ( and that was nothing to do with the trouble in the Red Sea despite the spin ).

      • Track says:

I don’t see anything “dirt cheap” — those £999 pp deals are from Barcelona, slightly more covenient dates are £1100 pp or more.

Spending £2200-2400 even with flights, on cruise that’s not inspiring — not a bargain, and not money well spent.

        • Dragonlady says:

Loads of dates across the summer for £999 per person including flights ..All ( decentish ) food ,all non alcoholic beverages and a sea terrace cabin …try and book a similar package anywhere for the same money ( because you won’t ) .Routes may not be inspiring ( as was my comment) but really, a couple of grand all in for a sea terrace cruise in peak summer with flights included …deluded if you think this is a bad deal…

          • Rob says:

There is a lot of delusion about summer hotel rates in the Med from people who never go. You need to budget €1,000 per night, breakfast only, for a smart 5-star. Cheapest room at Jumeirah Mallorca, for example, across July and August is €927 and that is only occasionally available.

  • jamestg86 says:

Oh Rob just shut up. Who the hell would ever pay that? You just need to work a bit harder to find a deal. Very tedious hearing you all whine on.

A few myths on these cruises to clear up:

You DO get your Deep Blue Extras, if you were a Sea Blazer (ie you took one from Portsmouth that first year).

The restaurants – I booked all mine at 5.03AM the second they opened 45 days before. and whilst I got in everywhere, times are questionable, but given ship stays on +2 BST, 8-9PM isn’t really such a problem. They are now all completely full so hell knows what people are supposed to do know, still a month out!

The new deals are absolutely not good value. And if you’ve done one of these before, you’ll soon get bored of exactly the same menu, patchy entertainment at weird times, and the fact the ‘Galley’, i.e. food court, has become waiter service to stop you running off to your room and saving the room service charge, whilst stating ‘for safety’. Funny enough Virgin was the only cruise through covid with no facemasks!

Lovely ships, super staff, bit of a rip off and designed for high rolling yanks, quite clearly. The clientele will be a mix of Virgin staff on comps, VS miles deals, and a few rich yanks who will realise they’ve paid 10K more than everyone else and get seriously pissed with the staff as a result.

Still happy with my Greece cruise though for 160K, but only as I sorted flights/hotel a year out speculatively. £50 + 36K Avios. Cash price now £1451… for flight alone, cruise now £2600. I think that’s a good enough return.

Moral of this story though – it’s very good, but it really isn’t exceptional, so be careful if you are tempted to blow loads on this.
