NEW: Book Virgin Voyages UK cruises from just 85,000 Virgin Points

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Virgin Red has launched redemptions for the first Virgin Voyages cruises from the UK which are setting sail this summer.

Options start at just 85,000 Virgin Points for a three night cruise for two people.

As these cruises all start in Portsmouth, you don’t need to worry about the costs of expensive peak season positioning flights to Athens or Barcelona. This has been an issue for some people with the Mediterranean redemptions, which are still bookable.

7 nights Virgin Voyages full board cruises for two from 120,000 Virgin Points

Each cruise is full board. All your meals, soft drinks, fitness classes, entertainment etc are included – even tips. You only pay for alcoholic drinks.

Remember that these are adults only trips.

A lot of HfP readers have jumped on these redemptions in the past few years. The feedback in our forum has been fantastic – from young and old, from those who wanted a bit of a party to those who simply wanted a quiet break after a tricky couple of years. There is a Virgin Voyages master thread in our forum for your Q&A.

If you are short of Virgin Points, options include:

  • transferring Tesco Clubcard points (should happen overnight)
  • transferring American Express Membership Rewards points (should be instant)
  • transferring Heathrow Rewards points (not clear about timeframe)

You can transfer points from another Virgin Points account to yours for a flat £10 fee. However, if both of you are travelling then the call centre should be able to take the points from two accounts.

Here are your options, all of which depart from Portsmouth:

Things to know

There are a few things to know before you book:

  • you need to get to and from Portsmouth at your own expense
  • the cruises are adults only
  • the cost is per cabin, sleeping up to two – there is no discount for single occupancy
  • cabins are Central Sea Terrace or The Sea Terrace on Resilient Lady, and will be determined by Virgin Voyages according to availability
  • it can take up to three working days to receive your Access Code once you have redeemed your points – once you have the code, you book via the Virgin Voyages website and use the code at the point of payment
  • Access Codes are transferable and do not need to used by the person who redeemed the points

Note that there is no guarantee that you can book the exact cruise you want – you need to make sure the cruise in question is still available for cash.

If you want to find out more about Virgin Voyages, here is our report from an afternoon on ‘Scarlet Lady’, the first ship in the fleet.

If you want to top up your balance by buying Virgin Points, the link is here.

You can book via the Virgin Red app or online. Read the instructions carefully before booking – you need to check there is still a relevant cabin available for cash before ordering your booking code, and once it arrives you should book ASAP before the availability disappears. Based on last year, you should be offered the chance to upgrade your cabin for cash nearer the time of departure if you want something larger.

PS. If you want to build up a Virgin Points balance for a similar redemption next year, assuming the deals return, take a look at the generous sign-up bonuses available on the Virgin Atlantic credit cards.

I get that the companies are just there to generate cash and that the previous years cruises were because they were desperate for passengers rather than some desire to give customers good value, but at least they felt like they were giving ppl a good value redemption that was actually rewarding its customers.

These just feel like crappy value ‘offers’ to try and extract every possible point that they can from it. Expect Portsmouth to Bruge to be 110k next year if they manage to get 85k for it this year lol

    • Track says:

Shorter trips, higher yields. That’s the reason for Portsmouth cruises (plus, Athens clearly a bottleneck for positioning flights).

Points prices indicate VV don’t need points passengers this year.

  • m says:

    hard pass

  • Travel Strong says:

It does indeed feel like they are ‘testing the market’ to see how many points they can squeeze out of folk, yes. I’m not a buyer at any of the recent prices, unfortunately.

  • Daisy says:

Gosh that’s a lot of points for those cruises, compared to previous offers. Just got back from a cash paid for VV cruise it was fantastic.

  • Paul says:

    meh, no thanks.

  • Kathy says:

Yeah I think that’s me priced out of the Virgin cruises. Glad to have got one when the price was so good last year, but we said at the time we wouldn’t pay cash prices for it, and they are simply not particularly good value for me as a solo traveller.

  • ken says:

You have to forget what price these were 2 years ago. Unlikely that we will see them again.

These prices are just fair value, but zero appeal to me.

    • Travel Strong says:

Agree – they are ‘fair value’ in the same way as a Greggs sausage roll, yes.

No-one is flocking to Greggs off the back of the virgin points deals, though.
If that’s where they want to pitch the cruises, OK… but folk won’t flock to them.

  • Alex W says:

At 1p per point you’re now looking at the equivalent of £275 per night which seems to be roughly the same as the cash price. No longer the outsize value it used to be.

    • paul says:

I pay max £150 per night balcony on Celebrity INCLUDING drinks, WiFi and grats.

3 x 14N on Princess coming this year and still below £150 all in.

      Virgin has zero attraction.

And there’s the problem they have. Go for a younger guest that can afford 1 cruise a year and miss the guests who are booking 3 or 4 a year.

      • TGLoyalty says:

3 people 14 nights for £2100 total? or £150 per night per person?

      • Jodi says:

We have booked the portsmouth cruise Rockstar for 2000 for the 4 nights. So yeah these figures aren’t really adding up.

One thing I will say though is it depends on how you cruise. I hate the fact that on celebrity large areas and restaurants are blocked off if you aren’t in a suite..and virgin do have free WiFi, soft drinks and all speciality restaurants included for all guests.

We upgraded to rockstar because we have a bit of wedding budget leftover and it’s our mini moon. But at 1300 sea terrace with all this included I still think it can be a better deal that some other lines. Also overnight ports always appeal to me.
