IHG has announced the opening of its first InterContinental hotel in Cape Town.

The company is taking on the Table Bay hotel on the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.

It will open in December 2025 following a refurbishment.

InterContinental to manage Cape Town Table Bay hotel

The Table Bay Hotel opened in 1997. Competition on the V&A Waterfront has been increasing, however, in particular with the Cape Grace hotel moving under the Fairmont banner after a refurbishment.

The hotel has historically been owned, under a long lease, by Sun International which also managed the property. With the lease coming to an end, the V&A Waterfront has taken back ownership and will fund the refurbishment, estimated to cost over Rand 1 billion. Sun International will continue to manage the hotel.

Following the works, the hotel will have 306 rooms, including 45 new suites, with views of the harbour, Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean. There will be a new pool bar and terrace and spa, and an executive lounge will be added.

The hotel will be closed during the refurbishment.

The IHG and Hilton presence appears to be quite weak.
Is there a reason? (I know the Hilton deflagged at start of Covid).

Not sure – perhaps lack of business travellers? The CPT boutique hotel scene is great but overpriced. The major chain hotels are soulless. The Airbnb market is great value. You can get a professionally managed 2 bedroom Airbnb in Seapoint with ocean views for £75 per night, depending on time of year. Last time I was there in April, I met a London couple by the pool in my Airbnb who were renting out their apartment for £250 a night and working from CPT and spending less than £150 a day between them.

Curious to see what IHG will charge at this property.

We stayed at Table Bay for one night last year. A good location on V&A Waterfront. It was certainly in need of a revamp. But the staff were very friendly and helpful.

I do like the Radisson Red in the quieter part of the Waterfront, nice vibe and a cute rooftop pool and bar

Another vote for the Radisson Red. It felt somewhat spartan, almost like a hostel for flashpackers, but I liked the vibe and location. I’m sure the IC though will cater to a different clientele.

  • Dragonlady says:

I stayed there for a week about 15 years ago ( pre the World Cup ) and it was absolutely fabulous back then (no other hotels on the waterfront back then ). We had a suite with an amazing terrace and a view overlooking the harbour and Table Bay Mountain. Breakfast was probably the most impressive I’ve had in any hotel ( ever ).

    • NICHOLAS says:

Agree on the breakfast front – largest, highest quality spread I’ve ever had in a hotel

  • Radiata says:

My usual place in CT is the Westin. Lovely view of the waterfront and the sea from the Executive Lounge. Staff friendly. Breakfast in lounge and restaurant on ground floor very good. SA (incl. CT Westin) oft offers guava as a breakfast juice in addition to orange/apple/grapefruit/carrot. KLM crew seem to enjoy it too. Free shuttle to waterfront mall entrance.
