Avios has gained a new hotel partner – Choice Privileges.

With zero fanfare, Choice Hotels has appeared as a transfer partner on the British Airways website (click here) which is good news for any readers who may be sitting on some Choice Privileges points.

This is very possible due to the recent acquisition of Radisson Hotels Americas by Choice.

Transfer Choice Privileges hotel points into Avios

As a quick recap for new readers, Radisson Hotels was acquired in 2018 by a Chinese state-owned hotel group, Jin Jiang.

The acquisition fell foul of the US Government, which was concerned about what may happen to the passport and credit card data shared by guests. In 2022, the Americas arm of Radisson Hotels was sold to Choice Hotels.

At this point, members of Radisson Rewards had a choice. They could see their points converted into Choice Privileges points (which would let them continue to redeem at US Radisson hotels as well as all other Choice properties) or keep them in Radisson Rewards and continue to be able to redeem for Radisson properties outside the Americas.

This is why, even though Choice Privileges has almost no properties in the UK, you may well have some of its points.

What are the Choice Hotels brands?

Choice Hotels is generally focused on the ‘value’ end of the hotel market with the majority of properties being in the United States.

Brands include (apart from the acquired Radisson brands in the US) Cambria, Comfort, Quality Inn, Sleep Inn, Clarion, Everhome Suites, Woodspring Suites, MainStay Suites, Suburban Studios, EconoLodge and Rodeway Inn.

What is the conversion rate from Choice Privileges to Avios?

As you can see here, the exchange rate from Choice Privileges into Avios is 5:1.

You can convert into either a British Airways, Iberia Plus or Aer Lingus account.

Other airline partners include AeroMexico, Air Canada, Air France KLM, Alaska, Qantas, Southwest, Turkish, United and Virgin Australia.

I don’t know enough about Choice Privileges to know if 5:1 is a decent ratio or not. However, since Marriott Bonvoy is the only hotel programme I have ever looked at where converting to airlines miles is decent value, I suspect not.

It’s more likely that you have a handful of Choice Privileges points which you had written off as worthless but which may now let you salvage a small number of Avios.

  • John says:

That is a abysmal transfer rate. Choice sells their point for 0.75-1 cent each. So 5:1 implies that avios are made of gold.

    • Dubious says:

Indeed. As a general indication, I see it as:
20,000 Choice Points is enough for a hotel room (not luxury, but at least 1 night somewhere reasonable, sometimes 1.5 nights).

20,000 Choice Points would convert to 4,000 Avios….
What will 4,000 Avios get you?

£40 worth of Avios or £32 of Nectar Points…

      • Erico1875 says:

What will 4000 Avios get you? See other article on Finnair Avios Hotels. About €250 of hotel stay

  • Iain says:

Just to note that there are a handful of Comfort Inn’s in London, so there is at least one city you can redeem in.

  • Cat says:

I got 3 nights in Funken Lodge on Svalbard for 48,000 points, which would have been about £800 (at normal rates), breakfast included.

5 : 1 is a terrible rate – if you have small numbers of orphaned Choice points, I’d recommend buying points to redeem.

Also look into Scandinavian redemptions – there are some fantastic ones!

  • Alan says:

Appalling value for sure. I’ve got almost 20k and thinking of using them when in the US – although not at the Scandinavian deal level I can get a night a reasonable hotel in their chain (NB I note there’s a Clarion hotel near Newcastle too) for 20k points. In comparison a nearby HIX is 56k and Hotel Indigo (admittedly quite a bit nicer!) is 90k.

  • PeterV says:

They seem to keep adding transfer options, the FlyingBlue and Turkish Miles & Smiles partnerships were also added with little to no notice a few weeks ago.
5:1 is not great though. I had 50k Choice points from the time when the Radisson programme capsized, and used them for 3 nights in Prague and 3 near Milan, at totally adequate hotels. The Prague one even included breakfast. Better than 10k Avios I guess!

  • RussellH says:

This was written up on Award Wallet about 10 days ago, and flagged there as appalling value.
There is a Clarion hotel near Stratford-upon-avon at Charlecote, a Quality Hotel in Coventry; a Comfort Inn in Birmingham, and another near Arundel – I have been looking for somewhere to use the 19K points I have! The Clarion ought to be acceptable, so might well try it out, even though it is not that far away, as it could be a base for a few different visits I plan to make. It is currently at 12K points a night, but apparently goes as low as 8K.

  • TGLoyalty says:

The choice hotels website really needs a redesign! Considering they own Radisson in the USA you’d think they’d now have the people to do better than this.

    • PeterV says:

Absolutely! They don’t even have a list of their destinations, anywhere.

  • Matarredonda says:

A question I should know the answer to, can I convert Avios points to IHG Rewards?

    • Rob says:

Yes, via Finnair. Currently suspended though I think and shockingly bad rate.

    • TGLoyalty says:

You really don’t want to do it.
