Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Heathrow Express still offering £10 August tickets – and now with 10 points per £1 on top!

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Heathrow Express is running a strong promotion for travel in August, although only a limited number of dates are still available.

You can book a one way ticket for just £10.

Given that children under 15 are free on Heathrow Express, a family of four with two young children could travel to the airport for just £20.

You may remember that we covered this deal last month. What has changed now is that Heathrow Express is ALSO offering 10 Heathrow Rewards points per £1 on all pre-booked tickets bought by 31st August.

This is equivalent to a further 10% return on your spending!

Heathrow Express

The £10 tickets offer can be be booked via this link

Only 25,000 tickets are being released at £10 so you should book sooner rather than later. Best availability now is towards the end of the month.

The offer can be combined with a Railcard discount which takes the price down to £6.60 each way. Details of how to claim a Railcard discount are on this page of the Heathrow Express site.

Get an extra 10% to 15% off with American Express

Heathrow Express is currently offering 15% cashback to many American Express cardholders.

You need to see if you are targeted for this by looking in the ‘Offers’ tab on the Amex website or app for each of the cards that you hold. You need to click ‘Save to Card’ to register.

Depending on which version of the offer you have, you will get 10% to 15% cashback on your next Heathrow Express transaction. There is no minimum spend. The offer can only be used once per registered card.

This could take the cost of your special offer ticket down to as little as £8.50 one way.

Earn Heathrow Rewards points too

You are able to collect Heathrow Rewards points on Heathrow Express tickets booked online – click here to read the details on the Heathrow Express website.   This works on both the main website and the Heathrow Express app.

The standard earning rate is 1 Heathrow Rewards point per £1 spent.

However, until 31st August you will receive 10 Heathrow Rewards points per £1.

They can be redeemed 1:1 for Avios, Virgin Points, Emirates Skywards miles, Heathrow shopping vouchers and various other bits and pieces.

(If you are booking fully flexible Heathrow Express tickets you can book via www.heathrowexpress.com/avios and earn 5 Avios points per £1 spent (see ba.com here) but you cannot combine this with the £10 offer. In any event, 10 Heathrow Rewards points per £1 is more valuable than 5 Avios per £1.)

Full details of the ’10 points per £1′ offer can be found on the Heathrow airport website here. No registration is required.

It’s a mystery why they did away with discounted tickets when the Elizabeth Line was coming along to eat their lunch. £10 is the limit of what I’d pay to use HEX but I WOULD pay that, if I could with any ease. And not just during August but during the whole year. I wouldn’t mind if it would require advance purchase. A minicab (or even better, a free lift) to Paddington followed by wheeling my cases onto the HEX with no stairs or lifts to negotiate and proper luggage racks on board adds up to a tempting option. I cannot for the life of me work out who are all these people paying £25 for a single to go to Paddington.

    • James says:

I’ve always imagined it was 80% people on expenses. Plus leaving Heathrow just tourists who don’t know any better.

      • Londonsteve says:

That’s my impression too. I can’t imagine a business traveller would be taken in twice, however, once they realise 90% of them need to change onto another train at Paddington to continue their journey. There’s a fair chance they’ll be getting on the very same Elizabeth line train they could have taken from Heathrow! The free Avios and Heathrow Rewards points will sway it for some.

  • Londonsteve says:

I tried to book online using a Railcard and while it offers a reduced fare of £16.50 for a standard single, it refuses to discount the £10 early bird ticket. Anyone know what’s going on? The T&Cs expressly state that Railcard discounts are available for the £10 tickets.

    • Londonsteve says:

Scratch that. I’ve got a Network Railcard and realised it’s subject to a minimum £13 fare Mon-Fri, hence no discount off the £10 fare. It comes down to £6.60 if you use another Railcard that doesn’t impose a minimum fare.

Not exactly pots of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Liz line from say Farringdon (now’s it’s the rail centre of London) to T1/2/3 is about 34 minutes if you take a T5 service which is semi express.

Tube to Paddington nor Liz line at least 8 minutes, plus 5 to change to Heathrow Express platform. Assuming 7-8 minutes average wait for an express (ie 0-15 wait), then 15 minutes (really about 17 on Heathrow Express) then total time would 35 minutes.

So Heathrow express at discount code saves you 50p, for a lot more hassle and takes longer.

Discount ticket needs to be back closest to £5 to pay for the hassle and longer journey.

Was anyone ever able to get Avios for their Heathrow Express ticket purchases?
The BA shopping portal / Avios app says you can get X avios per £ spend (I forgot the exact rate). I always book using the link, and then enter my BAEC number at checkout on the Heathrow Express website. I never got any avios from this. I fly 50+ flights a year and always take the HEX so the points would be meaningful!

  • Mike says:

More tickets seem to be available. I just managed to get one for the 24th, which wasn’t appearing yesterday.
