Czech Airlines to leave SkyTeam

Whilst the SkyTeam airline alliance is preparing to welcome Scandinavian airline SAS as a new member on 1st September, it will soon see a departure too.

After 100 years – in fact, 100 years and 362 days – Czech Airlines will cease to exist after 26th October.

The airline has been owned by Prague-based low cost carrier Smartwing since 2017 but various attempts to revive the flag carrier have failed.

Czech Airlines to leave SkyTeam

Czech Airlines will disappear from the SkyTeam membership list, and Smartwing – as a budget carrier – has no interest in replacing them. The OK Plus frequent flyer scheme will also close after 26th October, with all points balances wiped out.

It does appear, however, that the Czech Airlines brand will remain – albeit with Smartwing operating the flights under Smartwing (QS) flight numbers – on routes which can sustain a more premium service.

Czech Airlines is currently a shadow of its former self, with its fleet of two aircraft only flying two routes – Prague to Paris and Prague to Madrid.

Rather sad story about Czech Airlines who’ve struggled for years. While there has obviously been a lot more to it I suspect opening up PRG to so many rotations by so many LCC over the last three decades has been a big factor.

I remember being in PRG in 2022 and surprised the lack of Czech airlines aircraft but there were loads of codeshares on the board. At the time they were down to one route (CDG) they’d just stopped one route which oddly was Hurghada (HRG I think). So their low point was a single route.

I was surprised the Madrid route isn’t daily but they codeshare with Iberia to take up the slack.

Used to have a good on-board service so it was a shame to see the state they were in. They’ve not even had their own lounges for over 10 year. The Mastercard lounges in PRG used to belong to Czech Airlines

I haven’t flown with them since the late 90s early 00s when I had projects in Prague. Even then they felt a bit lije a boutique airline than a full carrier but they were nice with it. I recall a lot of grumbles amongst my Czech colleahues though, usually about the FF scheme. I cannot recall if the grumbles were because it was so limited or because they were Skyteam and not *A.

Was meant to fly with them in May 2020. The one Covid cancellation that I never managed to get refunded. Even the voucher was useless because their network had shrunk so much.

    Your Marriott link doesn’t work

  • PB says:

Looks like the Marriott bonus could be up to 50% bonus, this is what I got offered following the link.

  • Throwawayname says:

What a shame about Czech Airlines- it had managed to avoid total collapse and was going to get resurrected, then ended up being the victim not of COVID itself, but of its government refusing to offer any financial assistance when most of its competitors had been showered with bailouts and super cheap loans. PRG is a great airport to connect in and their intra-Europe business class service in the noughties was, if not the absolute best, easily in the top 3.

  • David S says:

45% bonus here. Very timely reminder to buy extra points for an upcoming stay

  • BJ says:

Only 35% for me so no business for Marriott. I never deal if I don’t get the maximum offer. No surprise as my experience with them is consistently poor on everything from hotel standards to offers to status recognition.

    • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

Agreed. No max bonus no dice. One can’t reward the algo.

      • BJ says:

Different buy bonuses are arguably even worse than their ‘starting with your second stay’ malarkey.

      • Lady London says:

Is “Don’t feed the algo !” a new thing. A bit like “Don’t feed the troll” ?

IHG is the same. Some get 100% buy-points bonus. Mainly less loyal ones I would guess. If they give you less, Don’t Feed The Algo

        • BJ says:

Or put another way ‘How to train your Loyalty Scheme’ …been doing it quite well with Nectar for a few years now, small benefits but proved to myself that it can be done 🙂

  • tical says:

50% Marriott bonus for me as well, making it 0.65p
