How many British Airways Avios points do you need to fly to a particular city?

It is surprisingly tricky to find out how many Avios are required for a particular route.  The ‘Avios Spendjng Calculator’, which had been broken for a long time, now seems to have permanently disappeared from ba.com.

This table should simplify the process.  It lists British Airways destinations alphabetically with pricing to / from London.  Prices are one-way.

How many Avios do I need to fly to ....?

How does the Avios pricing table work?

Prices are shown separately for Off Peak and Peak dates.  These are shown in ba.com during the booking process.

There are ‘fewer Avios, more cash’ options too – and they may be better value

British Airways, historically, has added a ‘taxes and charges’ sum to Avios redemption pricing. This has changed.

You now pay a fixed figure to contribute towards taxes and charges, as low as 50p each way on short haul economy flights and £12.50 each way on short haul business class flights.

Other pricing options are available, requiring fewer Avios but more cash. You can see these on the final page of the ba.com booking process.

For short haul, you will generally get better value by NOT choosing the 50p / £12.50 cheapest option. The best option is usually somewhere in the middle. For long haul, the ‘most Avios, least tax’ option as shown below is likely to be best value.

What’s the easiest way of knowing which Avios and cash combination is best?

I use ‘the 1p system’ which I outline here.

Put simply, assume that an Avios point is worth 1p. For each of the 5-6 Avios and cash combinations shown, convert the Avios into cash at 1p per point and see which option is cheapest in total. This will help you decide which option is best for you.

For example, 10,000 Avios + £200 is a poorer choice than 20,000 Avios + £50 if you use my ‘1p per Avios’ valuation. Of course if you only have 10,000 Avios then you’ll be choosing that option anyway – you may also want to choose that option to conserve Avios for future trips.

What about First Class redemptions?

Whilst it’s possible to redeem Avios for First Class tickets, British Airways treats them slightly differently and the pricing structure is not the same as for other classes.

To keep this chart simple(ish), we have written a separate article on how to redeem Avios points for First Class flights on British Airways which is here.

The British Airways Avios flight redemption pricing chart

Let me say again: there are other pricing options available for each route which require fewer Avios but more cash. Some of these options may even be better value, especially on short haul routes, if you are not using a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher.

To find out how many Avios you need to fly in British Airways First Class, read this article.

This table was put together manually. If you spot any errors – either pricing errors or routes missed / routes to be added – please comment below and we will update it during the day.

Why is it showing a business quote of 200,000 + £950. for Antigua next July using a companion ticket?
    Thank you

    • Anna Wadd says:

I also went into my last 241 booking to Vancouver and found i had paid £900 + 200,000 avios and now i’m wondering if this was wrong?
Anyone got any ideas for us on this?

      • Colin MacKinnon says:

100,000 each way peak price equals 200,000 for one person, which equals 200,000 Avios for two with a 241.

Fee for outbound c£240, maybe another £240 for inbound, equals c£400 per person. 241 doesn’t apply to fees, taxes etc so x2 = c£800?

  • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

@Rob often gives examples where you can get more than a penny per avios of value – he regularly mentions GVA during half term in the skiing season for example – but he also notes that those are outliers and in reality not many people are going to get outsized value of multiple pence per avios.

For most people they will be getting around the penny per point on their redemptions.

I’ve just calculated some “what if I used avios instead of cash” for some forthcoming trips to Berlin. I’d be getting between 0.9 and 1.1 for the flights I’m taking. I could boost that a little bit if I selected the flights with the highest cash fares but those flight times don’t suit.

You could spend ages calculating these things down to 17 decimal places but most people are happy using the penny per avios valuation because (a) it’s easy to understand and (b) it’s applicable to the vast majority of flights.

  • Greg says:

Thank you Rob, really helpful just wish BA could maintain and be transparent.

    • JDB says:

@Greg – BA would really be setting itself up for trouble if it published a table now given all the variants of Avios/cash options. They would have endless complaints from the great majority of people who don’t have a clue how it all works which of course suits BA as well.

  • Manc says:

Is there any way to avoid the extra Avios you have to pay to fly from MAN on short haul?

It seems long haul costs the same Avios whether you fly from Man or London but it costs double Avios to fly short haul from MAN 🙁

    • Rob says:

      No

    • Erico1875 says:

Is it even worth flying that short distance. It’s slightly over 3.5 hours to drive it

      • Londonsteve says:

Even better, take the train and save on airport parking. Friends and family railcard saves 1/3 when two or more adults are travelling together, almost certainly cheaper and more comfortable than driving then parking.

  • Rob says:

Because most people want simple models to help them get 80% of the way to the correct answer, which they consider more than acceptable.

    • Rob says:

The issue with Avios valuations is what value you put on the flight. Hence our article on ‘What is an Avios worth?’.

If you always buy refundable tickets, it is fair to compare the cost to a refundable flight (say £6,000)

If you never buy refundable tickets, it’s only fair to compare the cost to a non-refundable flight (say £2,000)

If you would happily fly indirect if you paid cash, it’s only fair to compare the cheapest ticket on the market, not the BA price (say £1,500)

If you’d never pay for Business Class in the first place, you should probably compare it to the cost of an Economy flight plus whatever you’d be willing to pay if BA offered you a cash upgrade at check in (say £1,000, based on £600 plus the £200 each way you’d agree to pay to upgrade)

My spreadsheet of the last 9 million Avios I redeemed gets me an average value of 1.23p. This is based on a very realistic view on what I would otherwise have been willing to pay. Even those values are higher than some people would use, because I do regularly pay cash for long haul business class seats, albeit in a sale – I don’t think I’ve ever paid more than £1,750 for a flight (unsurprising when you’re a family of 4!).

For example …. my October half term Dubai flights in BA Club are booked at £1750 on that spreadsheet, giving me 1.8p per Avios (2×241 used). This sounds fair to me – I’d probably pay that, and indeed one year we paid £1500 each cash to go on SWISS over half term. If you would value that flight more highly then you’ll place a higher value on an Avios.

The unspoken rule is that richer people get better value for their points, because they are paying cash for business class flights and five star hotels and redeeming for those is a real cash saving. For others, it is just a treat.

      • CJD says:

Comparing a business redemption to the cost of an economy ticket to work out value is stupid when a massive chunk of the value of that redemption is the experience.

        • Rob says:

That’s not what I wrote. What I’m saying is that – if you’d never pay for Business – you should value it at the Economy ticket cost PLUS whatever you would pay BA at check-in if they offered a cash upgrade. I suspect if they said ‘£200 each way’ you’d do it, but for £500 each way you wouldn’t. In which case, its fair to value the ticket at the Economy fare + £400 return.

    • zapato1060 says:

IMO you are unhinged. 1p is just a simple way to work out cost per Avios. If we all used our Avios only on sweet spots where your getting 2p-3p per Avios, the entire system would collapse.

      • Rob says:

More accurately, we’d all be holidaying in Lagos, which is usually the best value Avios route if you look at cash prices.

    • ADS says:

i’m getting flashback to 1st year Uni where the computer science kids thought everybody should be operating 6×6 matrix analysis for every decision

rather than using a simple model which achieved 90% of the analysis in 10% of the time – allowing people to get on and enjoy life!

  • daveinitalia says:

Amman, Tel Aviv and Cairo need the premium economy prices removed as these are now operated by short haul aircraft.

    • Jonathan says:

When were Amman and Cairo operated by wide body aircraft ?
I can understand using small aircraft in the interest of saving money on fuel, since the larger aircraft drink more fuel, but they should at least have a much better fitted cabin for these routes

      • Rob says:

I remember going to Cairo on a 747. I had put myself into F on the way back but had got massive food poisoning and spent the entire trip in pain with multiple loo visits ….

The idea that a flight to a major capital city in Africa which is over 5 hours from the UK should NOT automatically be on a long haul aircraft is simply a sign of how your brains have been conditioned by BA over the years!

        • Jonathan says:

I wouldn’t say my brains have been conditioned by BA over the years, when I went on BA384 nearly a couple of years ago, there were plenty of empty seats, and on a narrow body aircraft, that just tells you that there simply isn’t the need for a large aircraft that can hold a substantial number more passengers. The Amman route I flew home on was more busier, there were some empty seats, but not many, maybe I was just unlucky to be on a busy day, but BA aren’t going to be moving over to larger aircraft for those routes…

Getting food poisoning in F was clearly just a case of bad luck, plus those 747s are now just a memory, they were also definitely showing their age by the time they were retired

          • Rob says:

For clarity, I already had the food poisoning when I boarded – not BA’s fault!

But if they flew these routes with long haul metal they could better attract passengers from any competing airlines and most likely generate higher yield per seat. BA aren’t stupid and it’s clearly in their financial interest to fly using short haul aircraft but it’s very much to the detriment of passenger comfort. A shortage of wide body airframes could be something to do with why these 5 hour routes are rostered with short haul A320 family aircraft.

Just a reminder everyone to thank Rob (and his team) for this list, BA is a massive airline, and the amount of routes they operate is on another level to many airlines.

Also don’t be critical when highlighting a dead route, it’d take literally hours to go through (just about) every airport on the list

Frankly its far easier for us to throw it open to the readers for a final check then do the ludicrous amount of work required to ensure it is 100% accurate ourselves. We add and remove where we can, of course.

These things are easier left to the readers, going through every individual one would be tedious but we all have the routes that we know and if they’re missing or wrong we can point them out.

And often with short haul routes nothing is ever “gone” – we might find in a few years that some return. BA’s European route network can vary quite significantly year to year!

Yup, the eagle-eyed readers are like piranhas! 🐟
The most important bit is for HfP to act on the info and remove the spotted inaccuracies

What’s the easiest way of knowing which Avios and cash combination is best?

For desktop Chrome users, the BA Avios Cost Calculator does the work for you: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ba-avios-cost-calculator/hakbhkhjkokkdkjlojcicecpjfakmpjp
