Family of 4 (12yo and 9yo) have gone to Orlando/Disney 5 times over the last 9 years. On the most recent 2 trips we have added in 2 nights at Universal.
We tend to stay in Orlando for around 14 days and make use of the 14 day pass even though this is usually the same price as a 7 day pass or only around 10$ more.
We have stayed at Four seasons and Waldorf Astoria for Disney and Hard Rock and Loews Portofino Bay for Universal.

We have been at both Xmas as well as during the summer which tends to be quieter due to the extreme humidity as well as the odd storm.

My advice if you have the time and money would be to stay at a non Disney hotel on Disney Property. Waldorf has just been refurbished and is lovely. Four seasons is mid refurbishment and offering daily resort credit for the inconvenience. Both offer a complimentary shuttle bus to all the parks, however Ubers are under $10 and so very convenient.
I would then recommend never doing rope drop and basically doing a nice hotel stay and a few hours of Disney every day. The most magical place on earth can very easily turn into the worst place on earth if trying to do 12 hour days at a park with tired kids.

The 3 universal hotels that get you Universal fast passes are all very tired and the Loews is currently being refurbished. The Hard Rock is in real need of some works. Think dirty rooms with shower curtains.

The new Universal park Epic universe is opening some time in 2025. It was meant to be Summer however Universal have removed summer from recent press releases and just saying 2025, so unsure if this means opening early or late presume the latter. This new park comes along with some new Universal hotels that are badly needed.

We have always found airmiles seats in club from/to Miami, Tampa and Orlando and found the waldorf have honoured Gold Level having booked through 3rd party agents. This year upgrade to large suite as well as $25 food credit per day x2 (platinum fee repaid on this 1 trip)

Worth noting with Disney World that there are three Marriott Bonvoy hotels on site classed in the same group as the Disney Deluxe hotels. This means that twice a week you get extended night hours in one park (Magic Kingdom normally 10-12 an Epcot 9-11). Although other guests can still be in the park only those with a deluxe hotel booking can get on the rides. As most Disney Deluxe hotels are £400+ a night and the three Marriott Bonvoy can be as low as £150 a night then it is a good deal.

Any had any word yet on the pretty new Conrad Orlando?

  • JaneDoe says:

We have never been to Disney Florida but we are in Florida mid Jan for an event & thinking of extending the stay to do 3 days at Disney and 1 day Universal. We will be 2 adults.
Can you get disney tickets for just 3 days? Should we stay at Disney or outside?

    • Jonathan says:

Yes there are 3 day passes – if you include the park-hopper option then you can do more than one park in a day. This is useful as you may spend the morning at Animal Kingdom, the afternoon at Hollywood Studios and then go to the fireworks at Epcot or Magic Kingdom in the evening.
Outside hotels are cheaper but with Disney hotels it is location and transport. Moderate hotels like Pop Century are on the Skyliner (cable car) route which connects to Hollywood Studios and Epcot in 10 mins Plus there are also regular hotel buses.

      • The real Swiss Tony says:

Note the three day tickets aren’t available from Disney if they think you are in the UK. We bought the four park, four day ticket from Undercover Tourist. They e-mailed digital codes immediately and we loaded those onto the Disney profiles, so no messing around with the post

        • Andrew. says:

If you go to the Disney desktop site, scroll down to the bottom, it lets you choose from International sites. Choose European and you can buy 3 days tickets. We bought them that way before – it recognises UK addresses for payment.

          • The real Swiss Tony says:

Cool info – thanks for that. The other benefit with Undercover Tourist was they actually discounted the tickets a bit, presumably refunding some of the commission they get from Disney.

    • Doommonger says:

Why on earth would you want to go to Disney as adults? I get Universal……

      • Jonathan says:

In one word – EPCOT. Food and drink plus rides. Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind is in my view the best roller coaster in the world. Plus rides in the other parks like Avatar Flight of Passage are just out of this world.

        • Gordon says:

Avatar was great, didn’t like the space gravity one, I was unwell for a couple of hours after, great how they can create the zero gravity effect. Tron the new ride at magic kingdom was great! Long queues, if not in lightning lane.

      • JohnBart says:

Universal is a 2 day park and not much repeatability, easy to do 14 in Disney, the variety of good restaurants, club level rooms and EPCOT festivals make it a very easy adult holiday. I’ve done the sitting on a beach holidays and city breaks this is just on another level of fun
Found some great wines at some of the signature restaurants too, not cheap but views are usually spectacular.

      • Alan says:

Some people don’t just want mega coasters. I’d choose Disney over Universal any day, but would also go to Universal.

  • James says:

Has anyone here done Orlando and Disney on a budget ? Any top tips? I can get there on air miles …. That’s one thing I guess 😀

The Disney packages are great but for Easter fortnight it’s still over £11k for the budget hotels (family of 4) yikes!

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

Nearly everyone has A budget. It just has to be a high one. If by “a budget” you mean any sort of low/medium cost holiday then just forget it. It will still be ferociously expensive but with the added misery of packed lunches and budget-end shuttle buses.

    • Rach says:

There are plenty of hotel options if you have points to spend. We stayed at the Holiday Inn at Disney Springs and got breakfast included as IHG diamond members. They had hourly shuttles to and from the parks and got early entry as the hotel is on Disney property. It’s all the little bits that add up and make Disney expensive – $25 a day parking if you hire a car. $10 each on breakfast if you buy it at the parks, those sort of things, so hotel choice can be really helpful in minimising those costs, some hotels advertise a shuttle but it’s only three times a day and finishes at 8pm, so if you want to stay till 10pm and watch the fireworks that’ll be a $30 Uber ride back to the hotel.

    • pauldb says:

Get an apartment at Storey Lake – about £1500 for two weeks. The location is very convenient and has resort facilities: personally I think 14 day tickets but retiring to your own place most afternoons is the right mix. Add £2500 for tickets and it’s still a lot of holiday/entertainment for £4k. I also found the Disney quick service options pretty good and you’ll mainly only be having lunch there, so dining is not a big expense.

    • ChasP says:

VRBO a villa £1.2k, car hire £400, Disney Ticket £2k Buy your own snacks from Walmart and eat one meal a day at Dennys, Panda Express etc
2ad+2ch can do it for £5k

    • Murral says:

You *can* do it on a budget for a lot less – that would be either renting a villa/apartment on VRBO/airbnb etc or staying at a hotel offsite. We’ve stayed offsite in a condo, and in an offsite hotel, but we now choose to go less often and stay onsite. You can’t really replicate the experience you get staying at Disney.

I would say avoid the Easter holidays if you can. The parks are extremely busy, and prices are very high. If you’re happy to risk hurricane season, the prices in August, especially the last two weeks, are some of the lowest in the year, and the parks are much quieter. I would aim for a Disney moderate resort or higher if you can afford it, as I think the theming is nicer.

  • Ghosty says:

In August visited Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai Disney parks with my 11 year old grandson. Have now completed all Disney parks worldwide and age not only caught up with me, but zoomed past, very tiring now. My daughter has invited my wife and I to their trip to Florida in 2027 when our granddaughter will be 5. I’ll be looking for deals closer to the time but long days at Disney will be a thing of the past for me.

    • Rhys says:

      2027, talk about advance planning!

    • Gareth Oakley says:

Would highly recommend a trip to Tokyo DisneySea – probably the prettiest theme park anywhere. A revisit to see Fantasy Springs is high on my bucket list.

  • Adam says:

So here’s my view. The dining passes don’t save you money and you have to work hard and make sure that you plan it out if you actually manage to save a few $$. What it provides is peace of mind that you’re not spending more money on food and it’s basically just pre-pay.

In terms of hotels we stayed at Destino Tower and negotiated a deal on a club room when we got there. This was an absolute gem of a place. We then moved to Cabana Bay which, in my opinion, was like a holiday camp.

So we’re back again next year staying at Destino Tower again.

So if you need to pre-pay for your food then the dining plan is the way forward.

If you want to know that you can have unlimited drinks and basically three meals a day then a club room is the way. With some negotiation it’s not as much as might think.

And if you’re not a fan of holiday camps don’t stay at Cabana bay

  • The Savage Squirrel says:

For 20-30 minutes driving and hiring a villa it’s insane how far you can tip the “value” scales. Spectacular huge 5+bedroom villa, private pool, gated community with resort-level pool amenities also available. All for the same cost as a single standard two-doubles bedroom at a mid-range on-site hotel.

    • pauldb says:

Yes villas and apartments are incredible value versus hotels in Orlando. Though you do have to factor in Disney’s $30/day parking: they make it tough to avoid driving. Coupled with UK 14 tickets, it’s a surprisingly good value 2 week holiday versus a beach resort.
