British Airways drops flights from Southampton for Summer 2025

British Airways appears to have cancelled all flights from Southampton Airport for Summer 2025.

Passengers received emails last night saying that their flights had been cancelled, and services seem to have been pulled from ba.com.

The email from BA said:

British Airways drops flights to Southampton for Summer 2025

We’re very sorry to inform you that your upcoming flight to/from Southampton Airport has been cancelled, as we will no longer be operating flights to the airport during that time.

To help get your travel plans back on track, our teams are available to discuss your options, including re-booking on an alternative flight with us or another airline, or a full refund. Please contact us on xxxxxxxx at your earliest convenience.

If you incur additional travel costs, to/from Southampton, you will of course be able to claim this back at ba.com/helpme.

In Summer 2024, British Airways operated the following routes from Southampton:

  • Bergerac (Saturdays)
  • Palma de Mallorca (Sundays)
  • Faro (Saturdays)
  • Malaga (Sundays)

The routes were all operated by BA Cityflyer, a separate British Airways subsidiary.

It operates a fleet of Embraer E190 aircraft. These are smaller planes that are able to take off and land from London City’s short runways. When London City was closed over the weekend, some of the aircraft were moved to Southampton to operate these leisure routes.

I also could not find the winter flights to Bergerac and Chambery for booking, although I’m not sure if these ever went on sale in the first place.

I suspect that BA Cityflyer might expand its London Stansted operation with the aircraft that would otherwise be serving Southampton – we will see.

    British Airways…..synonymous with .”your flight is cancelled”. Time for the government to review and take action to protect the hundreds of thousands of disappointed customers.

      @Tony – what on earth do you expect the government could or would do? Perhaps you would also like the government to investigate Waitrose for its current distribution/availability issues? BA’s base is a very congested airport and if you analyse its cancellation rate vs other airlines in this context the suggestion that BA is synonymous with “your flight is cancelled” is totally absurd and based on sheer prejudice rather than fact.

      Parliament has also put in place very generous legislation to address cancellations and delays.

      I would have to agree, had three flights cancelled recently. They need to up their game.

    We got this yesterday, regrettably. It was a reasonably reliable way of getting to the Med for us – 10 min elapsed time from drop-off to the a-la-carte spitfire lounge. Super comfortable planes and (unfortunately) never really full on our flights this year.

    The early weekend departures were ace, except when the in-bound aircraft had failed to arrive the night before which happened a handful of times this season. Eg We were rerouted to depart from LGW with 12hr notice before a 7am departure, and it took BA 4 months to cough up for the reimbursement for a taxi.

    Interestingly, chatting to other passengers on the LGW flight at PMI immigration, and who were always scheduled to fly on that LGW service, they didn’t even know BA operated out of Southampton and some of them lived in Basingstoke and Fleet.

    Even the SOU EZY departures have had issues as they seem to operate the very last legs of the day – rather than risk coming in to SOU with inbound passengers and risking a late departure out of hours, EZY had a habit of not even leaving destination as it’d leave crew and aircraft out of position if they had to abandon at SOU.

    All a bit of a shame given the extension. And Jet2 moving in, down the road.

    At least we now have Chalair (Caen!).

    Ugh. As if the South West doesn’t have enough to put up with. It’s all budget airlines this way. Honestly. Return taxi to Heathrow from me £400+. Then they wonder why they have so little use from people outside London.

      And no, they don’t wonder why their base at a London airport is more popular with people who live near London than with people who live 200 miles away.

    What’s the alternative?? Do we just go back to being an airstrip with two or three channel island shuttles a week or are we actually an international airport that should be thriving ..

    It also seems BACF have ended their agreement with TUI for charter flights to PMI on saturdays and tuesdays.

    I was also affected by this, all my summer 2025 flight cancelled. These are the viable alternatives, but nothing in a Saturday. I go this flight every other week this year, I did notice that often it wasn’t full.

    you know the way people complain about Wizz Air regularly cancelling routes …

    do we need to put BA in the same category a W6 ?

      BACF have given approximately at least 8 months notice of these cancellatiions, do W6 provide more notice?

      Recent Wizz cancellations will have more to do with a lack of aircraft due to a significant percentage of their fleet being grounded due to engine issues that are no fault of the airline. These are in effect brand new aircraft out of action due to quality issues with certain engine parts and they’re far from the only airline affected. More generally, they’re an ultra low cost airline and will redirect their (flying) aircraft to routes that are higher yielding; they should be commended for trying odd routes and if they don’t work out commercially, it’s understandable that aircraft are relocated. By doing this they can keep fares rock bottom. Ryanair used to do the same while they were scaling up.

      Plenty of Wizz routes are now cast in stone and they’ve been flying them for anything up to two decades with no chance that they’ll be cancelled or experience a significant alteration of the departure time. At one point I used to fly them weekly and never had a cancelled flight and only one with a delay over 3 hours for which I received EU261 compensation via a specialist legal firm with no effort on my part. They’re really not as bad as some people make out, the onboard experience is nice and 99% of flights don’t experience any issues while they’re working hard on the remaining 1%. Any new route with a low cost carrier is at risk of being dropped if it doesn’t financially perform, heck BA will do the same as evidenced by the cancellation of these SOU services.
