InterContinental Ambassador’s fee is rising to $225 on 2nd October – should you join today?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

This is our review of the InterContinental Ambassador hotel loyalty programme.

The fee for InterContinental Ambassador is increasing from $200 to $225 on Wednesday 2nd October. This is confirmed on the application site here.

This makes it a good day to look at what InterContinental Ambassador is, and if it is worth paying a $200 (soon $225) annual fee to join?

InterContinental Ambassador review

InterContinental, the luxury hotel brand inside IHG One Rewards (which also covers Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo and others) is a little odd when it comes to loyalty schemes:

  • InterContinental also has its own loyalty scheme – Ambassadorwhich costs $200 to join ($225 from Wednesday)

And yet, despite the $200 fee, I consider Ambassador a good deal and was a member for many years.  I skipped a year in 2018/9, and have skipped 2023/4 as I didn’t have an InterContinental stay planned, but I expect I will be back in the fold at some point.

What does InterContinental Ambassador cost to join?

You can sign up here.  The cost is $200 today or $225 from Wednesday.

For new members, there is an option to use 40,000 IHG One Rewards points instead of paying $200 in cash.   Given my 0.4p valuation of an IHG One Rewards point this is a fair deal, although it is always possible to exceed 0.4p at peak hotels on peak dates.

The points alternative increases to 45,000 points from Wednesday.

What are the benefits of InterContinental Ambassador?

The key thing about Ambassador is that, once you are a member, the benefits are virtually guaranteed on paid stays. They are NOT guaranteed on reward stays but most properties do let you have them.

These benefits are:

  • A certificate for a free weekend night when you join and each year when you renew. In one swoop, you can save your entire membership fee with this benefit. To use the voucher, you need to book a 2-night weekend stay and pay the Ambassador Weekend Rate, which is usually equal to Best Flexible Rate. The rules say that only standard rooms can be booked. However, many hotels let you book club rooms or suites which is especially useful for families.
  • A GUARANTEED one-level room upgrade on every InterContinental stay – this is usually processed before you arrive and is visible online.  If the hotel cannot provide an upgrade, you receive 10,000 IHG One Rewards points compensation or a $50 food and beverage credit.
  • 4pm check-out – this is a GUARANTEED benefit and comes in very handy on a weekend break or on a trip with an evening flight back home.  If the hotel cannot provide late check-out, you receive 10,000 IHG One Rewards points compensation or a $50 food and beverage credit.
  • A $20 food and beverage credit per stay
  • Free mineral water in your room
  • Platinum Elite status in IHG One Rewards (usually requires 40 nights or $4,000 of qualifying spend)

The benefits package is slightly different for stays in Mainland China, including free restaurant breakfast for one person.

How does InterContinental Ambassador work?

Four things to know about the ‘free weekend night’ benefit

  • As the Ambassador Weekend Rate is more expensive than a non-refundable Advance Purchase rate, your free night is not totally free if you would otherwise have booked a cheaper pre-paid rate.  It is totally free if you would otherwise have booked at Best Flexible Rate.
  • If you are thinking about buying Ambassador for a specific trip, you can check weekend night voucher pricing and availability before joining via intercontinental.com/ambweekend
  • Some hotels now cap weekly voucher bookings. Edinburgh, admittedly a small InterContinental, is usually sold out a few months in advance, although when the voucher is available the hotel offers all room categories, even the top suites.
  • You can book a weekend night voucher stay without being an Ambassador member. If you are booking well in advance, it makes sense to book the stay first but only buy Ambassador nearer your arrival, in order to maximise your membership period.

You now receive benefits at Six Senses hotels too

In 2021 we saw the integration of some Six Senses hotels and resorts.

For participating hotels, you will receive:

  • Breakfast for two people
  • An amenity for a 50 minute massage for two people or a ‘local experience’
  • A one category room upgrade
  • A welcome platter on arrival
  • 4pm check-out, subject to availability
  • 10am check-in, subject to availability
  • Free internet access

In terms of ‘participating’, any Six Senses which is bookable on IHG One Rewards points – which isn’t many of them – will respect these benefits.  You may also find them respected at other properties.

InterContinental Ambassador review

Ambassador benefits are weaker than they were

InterContinental weakened the benefits of Ambassador in 2018. Before the changes, the hotel was obliged to provide Ambassador benefits – no ‘ifs’ or ‘buts’.  There was no mechanism to deal with a failure to deliver.

Since 2018, hotels are obliged to give you 10,000 points (which I only value at £40) or a $50 food and beverage credit if they cannot give you an upgrade or a 4pm check-out.  Some hotels treat this as a cheap way of buying off a member.

This happened to me at InterContinental Porto, pictured above, in February 2020.  A direct one-level upgrade was not available.  It was clear online that the hotel did, however, have numerous top suites available.  Before the changes, the hotel was obliged to give me a better room even if it meant offering the Presidential Suite.  Instead, I was given 10,000 points.

In this particular case I wasn’t too bothered.  Porto is not expensive so the points were a decent rebate on the price I paid.  I was on my own so a huge suite would have been a bit of a waste.  I was also not planning to spend much time in the hotel.  In other circumstances, however, it would have been an issue.

At hotels costing £500+ per night, being able to ‘pay off’ a member with £40-worth of points to free up an expensive room which can be sold to someone else is very tempting ….

Does Ambassador cover Regent?

No, not yet.

This situation cannot continue long term, especially with Regent Hong Kong and Regent Cannes – both converted InterContinental hotels – now open.

It is also rumoured, although not confirmed, that InterContinental Amstel in Amsterdam will convert to Regent when its refurbishment is complete.

Arguably the InterContinental brand is being weakened by having the top / refurbished properties transition to Regent. We can only hope that Le Grand in Paris, easily the best InterContinental in Europe, remains.

What is InterContinental Ambassador?

What does it cost to renew InterContinental Ambassador?

The initial fee to join Ambassador is $200 ($225 from Wednesday).

The current renewal options are:

  • Renew for $200 and receive 15,000 bonus IHG One Rewards points

or

  • Renew for 40,000 IHG One Rewards points

For clarity, you receive a new free weekend night certificate each year when you renew.

Is InterContinental Ambassador worth it?

Obviously InterContinental Ambassador is not for everyone.  However, you can earn back the cost of membership in just one weekend stay by redeeming the free night voucher.  It may even be worth it if you had just one long InterContinental stay booked and wanted to guarantee your upgrade.

Ambassador members also receive Platinum Elite status in IHG One Rewards.  This will make your future Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo etc stays a little more pleasant although it is unlikely to lead to major upgrades or lounge access.

You can learn more about InterContinental Ambassador, and sign up, here if it sounds interesting.

PS.  There is also an invitation-only premium level called Royal Ambassador, where the benefits include executive lounge access, $50 of mini bar credit per day and higher level upgrades.  Whilst the criteria are not published it is requires $five-figures of annual spend at InterContinental properties.  We don’t cover Royal Ambassador on Head for Points because it is so exclusive.

  • Robert says:

For years renewing AMB for those who had Diamond status with IHG (Or platinum on the old program although that wasn’t as beneficial) guaranteed you’re status would renew, even if you hadn’t stayed a single night during your membership year. And that really increased the value of paying for Ambassador, but sadly that’s now gone.

So now with higher fees, and less benefits, renewing is only worthwhile ones you have an IC stay planned, and as you said Rob, then do it closer the time, to maximise the membership year.

    • Daniel says:

Is this definitely true re Diamond no longer being given with Amb? I’m still Diamond and wondering if it’s worth Amb renewal to keep it.

      • Rob says:

        Definitely true.

Diamond was never ‘given’ though – it was just extended for 12 months. I think IHGs computer was badly programmed and was ‘if (status=>’platinum’), (statusendmonth = statusendmonth +12), (status=‘platinum’)’

        • Daniel says:

Sad days. Been top tier for years. The app still refers to me as a credit card holder (I am not), so maybe retain Platinum?

Do they do soft landings or will I crash out completely next year.

          • JPa says:

I think this is the last year of plat that was part of the closing of the creation card. Before for some reason they couldn’t tell who still had the card but everyone will lose it next year now

    • TGLoyalty says:

Fewer benefits? Extending Diamond wasn’t a benefit it was a mistake.

I won’t make platinum this year so for me it’s worth keeping Amb rolling. Personally I always get good use out of the Amb voucher as I quite like IC PL with lounge access for a relaxed couple days during Xmas checking out the lights and some shopping / bar hopping.

Hopefully an IHG Amex offer pops up soon

  • Paul says:

I’ve been Ambassador for a few years now, I’ve never actually managed to use the free night certificate for when it would have suited me, either that or the IC Park Lane difference between non refundable and flexible has been about £150.
I have renewed again this because of FOMO, but doubt I’m getting $200 of value.

  • Ian says:

The $20 is poor value, as you get a terrible exchange rate to pounds or euros.

The hotels are reluctant to give upgrades. Instead they would rather give points. So not guaranteed at all. This is despite rooms being available

    Same with late checkout.

Have struggled to get benefits in Dublin, Barcelona etc

Undecided if I will renew despite having stays in December.

    • Neil says:

I got €20 credit at the new IHG Chantilly about a week ago. Mind you, had to ask for it, as well as the other benefits.

It is new to IHG so perhaps forgivable.

      • aseftel says:

Per the terms it should actually be €15 in the Eurozone:

United States of America USD20, Euro currency member states EUR15, United Kingdom GBP15, Thailand THB600, Australia AUD25, Japan JPY2000, Saudi Arabia SAR70, Malaysia MYR50, Indonesia IDR180,000, Vietnam VND280,000 (excluding Danang which is VND460,000), Hong Kong HKD135, Korea KRW20,000. Else USD20.

        • Rob says:

Which is a dodgy rate, given $20 is €18, although only £14.91 at present so you’re ‘up’ by 9p if you use it in London or Edinburgh.

    • David ODonovan says:

I had no issues getting benefits at any of my intercontinental or Kimpton stays since joining 2021.

I have stayed is IC Barcelona , Edinburgh , Paris Le Grand, Berlin, Malta , Warsaw, Maldives , Geneva and Kimpton London and Edinburgh. All of these stays I got 4PM late check out , mostly proactively offered – so unsure what you’re talking about.

I have a lounge pass since 2024 which has always with access added without accessing.

I have received one cat upgrade at each stay except Geneva which gave a two cat and Berlin which gave a 3 cat to a premium high floor room.

In terms of booking room I try do this max value of the upgrade, e.g top club or premium room to get a junior/ suite or top classic to get a nice premium room.

  • Craig says:

I was a member for two or three years. I’m not sure that many of the ‘benefits’ actually materialised. Trying to find availability to use the weekend night certificate proved to be very difficult. Availability was almost non existent. This last 12 months I was awarded platinum status for some reason and didn’t renew my ambassador subs. We have a Cali road trip lined up next year so I will probably purchase and push hard for all the benefits.

    • NigelthePensioner says:

The IC in Cali is barely an IC – you’ll see!!

    • Chas says:

When we stayed at the IC in Monterey in 2019 it was impossible to book an ocean view suite on the website, but we were upgraded to one with our Ambassador status. I suspected at the time that they kept back the ocean view suites to facilitate such upgrades.

      • Phillip says:

IC Monterey was by far my most disappointing IC stay! Not so much the hard product but it felt like an arms length franchise that just didn’t care about anything IHG! I do have a soft spot for the Mark Hopkins though and I thought the IC Downtown LA was very good too.

        • Chas says:

It’s definitely unlike the others I’ve stayed at (much smaller for starters), but then again Monterey is hardly a busy Metropolis. I think it was possibly the nicest oceanfront hotel there, and as we were only staying one night I wasn’t too fussed as my wife was incredibly happy with her ocean view.

  • ClubSmed says:

I only stay around 30 nights in hotels per year. As such, gaining platinum organically is impossible. So buying it this way enables me to have the trappings of platinum and the additional points I get at this level pretty much pays the renewal price.

  • Jay says:

Do the Ambassador benefits apply when booking an Intercontinental property through BA Holidays or does it have to be direct via IHG website?

    • Rob says:

Must be direct (albeit see the comment about the villa upgrade in Ras!).

      • aseftel says:

That’s not quite right. Unlike the core IHG One benefits, it’s only the Ambassador benefits guarantee that is disapplied for third-party bookings in the terms. Of course, benefits that aren’t guaranteed aren’t necessarily worth anything and I’m not sure how well trained hotel staff are in the nuance. I have personally been able to use Ambassador benefits but not Diamond benefits on a BAH stay.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Yup the ambassador benefits still apply.

  • Nick says:

I’ve found that, increasingly over the years, the ‘value’ of the ‘upgrade’ has declined significantly, due to the vast range of rooms available at any IC property. The physical difference between, say, a basic level room, and the ‘upgraded’ one, say, on another floor, for example, can be tiny, as can the price, maybe only £10-15/night, so an actual upgrade becomes almost pointless. The art though, in some cases, if you can, is to book a room where you can see a bigger difference between the two.

The big value to us though has always been where the hotel allows the free weekend night to be booked in their high end suites, even penthouses, and that’s where we generally get a large financial return on the Ambassador status.

    • Rob says:

Agreed. I think that’s why it became less use to me – you do FAR fewer overseas weekend breaks when you have kids.

If my kids were at uni and my wife wanted a weekend in Paris I would be back at AMB in a shot, locking in a 241 suite at Le Grand.

      • Will says:

We got a massive upgrade at Marseille IC. From eur300 per night to eur1500 list price as diamond ambassador. In fact we never even got charged for either night on the ambassador ticket. An error by the front desk for sure. It’s happened twice now so sadly can’t reveal what I think caused the error but hope to try again this year and see if it works 🤪

      • David says:

Absolutely. Those that say there is no value in Amb really don’t know how to use it best.

  • Sam says:

The weekend night certificate was impossible to use and it ended up lapsing for me.
Having said that we were upgraded to a Villa for our 6-night stay at the RAK Intercontinental last year, even though I’d booked through a package and not with IHG direct – just informed hotel prior to stay of my ambassador status. Obviously no points earned but the Villa more than made up for it.

    • David says:

Have found IC RAK extremely generous. Got same upgrade earlier this year from ‘next up from standard’ room to a Villa, albeit booked direct.

      • BP says:

They stuck to the rules for me. 1 category upgrade and wouldn’t go further. I really disliked this hotel – a terrible clientele there for the all-inclusive packages. Too many rude Russians. Poolside toilets absolutely disgusting.

        • David says:

Oh dear. Didn’t really venture out of the Club lounge/pool area for pool and swim time. Breakfast and afternoon tea/evening canapés and drinks also in the Club lounge all without any obviously rude Russians. Other than one meal at the restaurant at the end of the ‘pier’, ate out of hotel other nights so had no complaints. I find rude Russians to be a more general UAE phenomenon.

          • Newburyrich says:

Had an enjoyable stay here. Paid about £160 per night for a club room in May and was upgraded to a villa. Club lounge was nice and was nice to get away from the hustle of the rest of the hotel

        • Sam says:

Unfortunately these Russians seem to be everywhere in the Middle East – like vultures with all inclusive like they’ve never seen food/drink before.
They really spoil it for everyone.
