InterContinental Ambassador’s fee is rising to $225 on 2nd October – should you join today?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

This is our review of the InterContinental Ambassador hotel loyalty programme.

The fee for InterContinental Ambassador is increasing from $200 to $225 on Wednesday 2nd October. This is confirmed on the application site here.

This makes it a good day to look at what InterContinental Ambassador is, and if it is worth paying a $200 (soon $225) annual fee to join?

InterContinental Ambassador review

InterContinental, the luxury hotel brand inside IHG One Rewards (which also covers Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo and others) is a little odd when it comes to loyalty schemes:

  • InterContinental also has its own loyalty scheme – Ambassadorwhich costs $200 to join ($225 from Wednesday)

And yet, despite the $200 fee, I consider Ambassador a good deal and was a member for many years.  I skipped a year in 2018/9, and have skipped 2023/4 as I didn’t have an InterContinental stay planned, but I expect I will be back in the fold at some point.

What does InterContinental Ambassador cost to join?

You can sign up here.  The cost is $200 today or $225 from Wednesday.

For new members, there is an option to use 40,000 IHG One Rewards points instead of paying $200 in cash.   Given my 0.4p valuation of an IHG One Rewards point this is a fair deal, although it is always possible to exceed 0.4p at peak hotels on peak dates.

The points alternative increases to 45,000 points from Wednesday.

What are the benefits of InterContinental Ambassador?

The key thing about Ambassador is that, once you are a member, the benefits are virtually guaranteed on paid stays. They are NOT guaranteed on reward stays but most properties do let you have them.

These benefits are:

  • A certificate for a free weekend night when you join and each year when you renew. In one swoop, you can save your entire membership fee with this benefit. To use the voucher, you need to book a 2-night weekend stay and pay the Ambassador Weekend Rate, which is usually equal to Best Flexible Rate. The rules say that only standard rooms can be booked. However, many hotels let you book club rooms or suites which is especially useful for families.
  • A GUARANTEED one-level room upgrade on every InterContinental stay – this is usually processed before you arrive and is visible online.  If the hotel cannot provide an upgrade, you receive 10,000 IHG One Rewards points compensation or a $50 food and beverage credit.
  • 4pm check-out – this is a GUARANTEED benefit and comes in very handy on a weekend break or on a trip with an evening flight back home.  If the hotel cannot provide late check-out, you receive 10,000 IHG One Rewards points compensation or a $50 food and beverage credit.
  • A $20 food and beverage credit per stay
  • Free mineral water in your room
  • Platinum Elite status in IHG One Rewards (usually requires 40 nights or $4,000 of qualifying spend)

The benefits package is slightly different for stays in Mainland China, including free restaurant breakfast for one person.

How does InterContinental Ambassador work?

Four things to know about the ‘free weekend night’ benefit

  • As the Ambassador Weekend Rate is more expensive than a non-refundable Advance Purchase rate, your free night is not totally free if you would otherwise have booked a cheaper pre-paid rate.  It is totally free if you would otherwise have booked at Best Flexible Rate.
  • If you are thinking about buying Ambassador for a specific trip, you can check weekend night voucher pricing and availability before joining via intercontinental.com/ambweekend
  • Some hotels now cap weekly voucher bookings. Edinburgh, admittedly a small InterContinental, is usually sold out a few months in advance, although when the voucher is available the hotel offers all room categories, even the top suites.
  • You can book a weekend night voucher stay without being an Ambassador member. If you are booking well in advance, it makes sense to book the stay first but only buy Ambassador nearer your arrival, in order to maximise your membership period.

You now receive benefits at Six Senses hotels too

In 2021 we saw the integration of some Six Senses hotels and resorts.

For participating hotels, you will receive:

  • Breakfast for two people
  • An amenity for a 50 minute massage for two people or a ‘local experience’
  • A one category room upgrade
  • A welcome platter on arrival
  • 4pm check-out, subject to availability
  • 10am check-in, subject to availability
  • Free internet access

In terms of ‘participating’, any Six Senses which is bookable on IHG One Rewards points – which isn’t many of them – will respect these benefits.  You may also find them respected at other properties.

InterContinental Ambassador review

Ambassador benefits are weaker than they were

InterContinental weakened the benefits of Ambassador in 2018. Before the changes, the hotel was obliged to provide Ambassador benefits – no ‘ifs’ or ‘buts’.  There was no mechanism to deal with a failure to deliver.

Since 2018, hotels are obliged to give you 10,000 points (which I only value at £40) or a $50 food and beverage credit if they cannot give you an upgrade or a 4pm check-out.  Some hotels treat this as a cheap way of buying off a member.

This happened to me at InterContinental Porto, pictured above, in February 2020.  A direct one-level upgrade was not available.  It was clear online that the hotel did, however, have numerous top suites available.  Before the changes, the hotel was obliged to give me a better room even if it meant offering the Presidential Suite.  Instead, I was given 10,000 points.

In this particular case I wasn’t too bothered.  Porto is not expensive so the points were a decent rebate on the price I paid.  I was on my own so a huge suite would have been a bit of a waste.  I was also not planning to spend much time in the hotel.  In other circumstances, however, it would have been an issue.

At hotels costing £500+ per night, being able to ‘pay off’ a member with £40-worth of points to free up an expensive room which can be sold to someone else is very tempting ….

Does Ambassador cover Regent?

No, not yet.

This situation cannot continue long term, especially with Regent Hong Kong and Regent Cannes – both converted InterContinental hotels – now open.

It is also rumoured, although not confirmed, that InterContinental Amstel in Amsterdam will convert to Regent when its refurbishment is complete.

Arguably the InterContinental brand is being weakened by having the top / refurbished properties transition to Regent. We can only hope that Le Grand in Paris, easily the best InterContinental in Europe, remains.

What is InterContinental Ambassador?

What does it cost to renew InterContinental Ambassador?

The initial fee to join Ambassador is $200 ($225 from Wednesday).

The current renewal options are:

  • Renew for $200 and receive 15,000 bonus IHG One Rewards points

or

  • Renew for 40,000 IHG One Rewards points

For clarity, you receive a new free weekend night certificate each year when you renew.

Is InterContinental Ambassador worth it?

Obviously InterContinental Ambassador is not for everyone.  However, you can earn back the cost of membership in just one weekend stay by redeeming the free night voucher.  It may even be worth it if you had just one long InterContinental stay booked and wanted to guarantee your upgrade.

Ambassador members also receive Platinum Elite status in IHG One Rewards.  This will make your future Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo etc stays a little more pleasant although it is unlikely to lead to major upgrades or lounge access.

You can learn more about InterContinental Ambassador, and sign up, here if it sounds interesting.

PS.  There is also an invitation-only premium level called Royal Ambassador, where the benefits include executive lounge access, $50 of mini bar credit per day and higher level upgrades.  Whilst the criteria are not published it is requires $five-figures of annual spend at InterContinental properties.  We don’t cover Royal Ambassador on Head for Points because it is so exclusive.

Keep thinking about the IC in Porto but does anyone know when the metro works will be done?

    • Swiss Jim says:

I shied away. With the Metro works it looked horrendous as somewhere to stay. Others may have experience of the reality.

Anyway I think Gaia (other side of river) nicer place to stay. Depends what you’re after. Perfectly acceptable Hilton / Hilton exec lounge.

  • daveinitalia says:

The Royal Ambassador minibar credit is no more. It went from unlimited free minibar (and some IC hotels had impressive minibars where you could easily drink more than $50 worth), to a daily limit and now it’s gone. Replaced with a 25 F&B credits worth $20 which is nowhere near as good.

  • Magarathea says:

I’m not sure if this is mentioned explicitly in the article or the comments so can I please check. I am IHG Plat at the moment and will drop at the end of 2024 to a lower level. If I buy IC AMB now, will my IHG Plat status extend to the end of 2025? Many thanks in anticipation.

  • David says:

Oh dear. Didn’t really venture out of the Club lounge/pool area for pool and swim time. Breakfast and afternoon tea/evening canapés and drinks also in the Club lounge all without any obviously rude Russians. Other than one meal at the restaurant at the end of the ‘pier’, ate out of hotel other nights so had no complaints. I find rude Russians to be a more general UAE phenomenon.

  • Hilda M says:

Came to correct the RA $50 minibar credit but see @daveinitalia beat me to it.

I stayed in the Regent Hong Kong back in May. Was given access to the Club Lounge and understand it was due to having a Lounge Pass rather than belonging to the “exclusive” RA tier 😁

    • TGLoyalty says:

So what does Royal Ambassador even get you any more?

Pretty poor really when a mini bar costs them literally nothing in the grand scheme of things.

With all the apps available to deliver to your door the maths on minibars will have to change or die for all but the super rich or super stupid.

      • Concerto says:

Totally agree. And I really hate those weight ones in the US where all items are sitting on an electronic sensor pad.

  • John says:

When I have looked at speculative AMB free weekend night bookings, the total shown always included all nights — irrespective of the voucher. Is this a manual adjustment they must apply at checkout?

    • MikeHi says:

Yep, the booking in app will show total amount but the free night will be deducted at check in.

      • Swiss Jim says:

Which is perfect because you don’t need to cancel an AMB booking before booking a more lucrative or certain one. Just cancel / rebook the earlier AMB stay after securing the second one (later stays you can rebook if cheaper rate or let low but just get charged for both nights).

    • TGLoyalty says:

The second weekend night will just be free at check out.

  • Selim says:

I am Diamond Ambassador this year , have already renewed my IC Ambassador for the next year , looks like i will retain my Diamond for next year with stays coming up , my Son and i have two rooms booked at the IC Montreal end of next Month ,waiting to see if we are upgraded ,next room upgrade is with Lounge ,fingers crossed .

    • TGLoyalty says:

Even if upgraded to a room that includes lounge you’re not usually given the lounge access, it’s one of the exclusions in IHG the programme.

If you hit 70 nights then you’d get lounge access if you choose lounge for the 40 nights benefit.

      • Swiss Jim says:

Unless you whinge (politely), fake the fact you know this, and say that’s outrageous. Before I had lounge access this typically worked for me. Most critically for a week long stay in Muscat with family…. 😀

        • TGLoyalty says:

Yeah it sometimes work. Most of the time they tell you to do one.

Middle East hotels are more likely to say yes than Canadian ones I reckon.

      • Selim says:

Thanks for the info ,can live in hope

  • Occasional Ranter says:

Used my Ambassador status for my first ever stay in an IC last week: Budapest. Underwhelmed by the hotel. Very tired furniture and decoration in room, 2 out of 4 lifts not working. But – staff were friendly, and location was unbeatable. Had excellent views of workmen shovelling mud and trees back into the receding Danube.

    • Swiss Jim says:

Urg. Planning a stay with my daughter at Christmas. I really need the 3 nights to hit my 40 for lounge access. But if Hilton better (I’m Diamond in both) I may go there and just fit a mattress run in. Anyone with experience?

Or other thoughts on IC or other Budapest options?

Or a perfect Christmas Market / IC match up? Not Prague as my daughter’s been there for that. Budapest fully cancellable.

      • NorthernLass says:

France does lovely Xmas markets though you don’t automatically associate them, and has some of the best ICs (Lyon, Marseille, Paris, Bordeaux). But of course you’ll be paying a lot more than in Eastern Europe.

      • Tariq says:

Haven’t used my Amb free night this year and no plans to book another weekend in London which would have been my backup plan.

Booked Berlin for December as not been before.

      • Chas says:

I combined my Ambassador voucher last year with Christmas markets (and Amex Plat foreign dining credit) in Vienna. IC was fine (a little dated), but treatment as Diamond Ambassador was good. Had booked a 3rd night through Emyr, and got upgraded to a corner junior suite with 4pm checkout honoured (plus other Emyr benefits). Vienna has the added benefit of a fantastic airport lounge for the return journey which Rhys has previously reviewed.

      • Charlie says:

The Budapest IC has superb staff, a superb lounge (which used to be the original cafe, with great views), however, just like the IC in Vienna, more often than not, has showers in baths still, and a slightly dated decor. It is possible to pay for lounge access at Budapest – about the equivalent of 50 EUR per night if I recall. The other IHG options in Budapest are the CP, which is a good CP with a tiny lounge in district 6, or the Holiday Inn over in Budaors – which is a 20 minute train ride away (but useful inbound/outbound between Prague/Brno/Btatislava/Vienna and Budapest). The train between Budapest and Vienna is 2 hours (check out Regiojet Business). If you have four nights, then 2 nights in Budapest and 2 nights in Vienna would be fun. Have you used the IC weekend night? You could book either Budapest or Vienna with club lounge access – both have good rates. It’s a shame you haven’t hit the 40 before you go out there. If you are just doing an interesting mattress run without your daughter, then: IC Budapest (pay for lounge access) then late out to HI Budaors, then early out and train to Vienna for IC Vienna (2 nights using Ambassador voucher on a club room rate). Alternatively, there is always the CP Bratislava if you want to indulge in 1988. Although 3 nights at the Bratislava CP might want to make you shoot yourself 🙂

        • Occasional Ranter says:

Vienna is also a T3 departure from Heathrow, as is Prague, as is Budapest. Not sure if everyone else hates T5 as much as me, but if you do…

      • Occasional Ranter says:

Jim, if the price was right I’d still stay there. Having walked around the whole city and seen where the other decent hotels are, I place a high value on the location of the IC. We got a rather minimal upgrade from twin river view to twin premium river view, but the view across the river and to the chain bridge was certainly impressive.

(The hotel was full to the gills with viking cruise passengers waiting to board delayed cruises, which I think probably explained the lack of room choice and high prices for me this time as I booked very close in)

      • C says:

Other options in BUD: Ritz Carlton is excellent, Marriott Budapest is also very nice. Both have lounges, the latter is a a riverside location overlooking the Danube, the former is central too however.

    • David ODonovan says:

Could try the newly opened Kimpton? I stayed at the crowne plaza during my stay , had lounge access due to my lounge pass and got upgraded to a junior suite ( paid £110 a night). Would recommend that hotel
