American Express in Spain clamps down on Priority Pass visits

Last month, American Express in Germany imposed a cap on Priority Pass airport lounge access.

For new applicants for The Platinum Card, Priority Pass access was restricted to 50 visits per year. This was split across the main and supplementary card plus guests.

If you hit the cap, your Priority Pass can be permanently cancelled. However, this is at the discretion of American Express – it may potentially look at other factors such as your card spending before deciding whether to pull the trigger or not.

It turns out American Express Germany was actually being lenient. American Express in Spain is really clamping down.

From 24th October, both new and existing holders of The Platinum Card in Spain will be restricted to 20 Priority Pass lounge visits per year.

Your supplementary cardholder will be restricted to 10 visits per year.

If you exceed the cap you will not have your Priority Pass cancelled (as is happening in Germany) but you will be charged $35 per visit.

Note that this cap only covers Priority Pass visits and not visits to other lounges supported by American Express. Plaza Premium lounges, for example, are not included in the cap as long as you enter by showing The Platinum Card and not by showing your Priority Pass.

There are no published plans to change the rules for UK cardholders at this time.

HSBC Premier World Elite Mastercard gets you get a free Priority Pass card, allowing you access to the Priority Pass network.  Guests are charged at £24 although it may be cheaper to pay £60 for a supplementary credit card for your partner.
