British Airways will now rebook Kuala Lumpur passengers on Malaysia Airlines

As we covered in an exclusive story last week, British Airways has suspended the launch of flights to Kuala Lumpur until 1st April 2025.

This is due to mechanical issues with multiple Boeing 787 aircraft which have caused revisions to the winter flying schedule.

To date, BA has only been willing to rebook passengers on Qatar Airways or to Singapore on British Airways. This has now changed.

BA will now rebook Kuala Lumpur passengers on Malaysia Airlines and Cathay

A rebooking arrangement has now been made with Malaysia Airlines and Cathay Pacific.

You can either:

  • fly direct to Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Airlines
  • fly to Singapore with British Airways and take a Malaysia Airlines connection to Kuala Lumpur
  • fly to Bangkok with British Airways and take a Malaysia Airlines connection to Kuala Lumpur

This is less attractive. As well as having multiple blackout dates, you are only allowed an Economy flight between Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur. Flights from London to Hong Kong must be on British Airways.

Whilst British Airways does not usually allow multiple changes to bookings, feedback in our comments is that people who had been moved to Qatar Airways have been successful in asking to be moved to a direct Malaysia Airlines flight. I don’t know where you stand if you accepted a BA re-route to Singapore after being told that you had to make your own way to KL.

    I was originally on BA/LHR-KUL on a 2-4-1/CV/Avios booking.
    I changed to BA/LHR-SIN on Monday this week – as it was the best offer on the table at the time.
    This morning, I just called BA, and got moved from BA/LHR-SIN, to MH/LHR-KUL.
    The agent originally advised that this was not possible according to the BA rebook policy, however – when I asked for confirmation of the wording in the policy – they relented – and I got MH direct to KUL.

    So yes, BA can change BA/LHR-SIN to MH/LHR-KUL

    I never even got offered the direct flight they automatically said Qatar but there is no premium on Qatar airways so I asked for Singapore which I got flight basically gets in an hour later than the original flight so not that bad

    Well after waiting a week and reading all the posts about this which left me in a much better learned mind, my online chat has resulted in a 2-4-1 on BA changed to the Malaysian flights in D class (whatever that means-but confirmed lounge access is included) with only small changed in our times with original dates -late Feb 25.
    Still had to provid3 the webpage for MH bookings as original offer was only to SIN, yes still happening this morning.

    We rebooked our flights with Malaysian Airways immediately on hearing about the BA cancellation as we (4) of us had to get to Kuala Lumpur on the same day and time, but the rebooking cost to us on MA (return, business, dates as with BA) was £7,000 more. Should BA not compensate us for this increased cost?

      Sadly not if you’ve made your own arrangements and cancelled the BA flights. Expensive mistake as they would have (as of yesterday) rebooked you on Malaysia at no additional charge.

      If you haven’t already cancelled with BA and can get your Malaysia booking refunded, that would be a far cheaper option…..

    We had economy + return tickets to KL in January which were cancelled with no rebook options on our dates. Spent the last few days on chat & eventually on phone. Agreed to refund flights, but not £500 in seat choices/ service charges. Finally yesterday had a call centre operative said this could be done. Guess what, the system wouldn’t let her. Call ended with a promise of a 7-14 wait, but no confirmation. Have already booked Malaysia for our original dates, but unfortunately no premium economy. Fingers crossed

    Just called up just then, and after a long hold time, they said to call back tomorrow because they will have “greater clarity and guidelines by then”. When I noted other people on this forum had successfully changed to Malaysian Airlines flight, they said “yes, they were doing that this morning, but since that time we received new documentation saying not to do that anymore, but we don’t have clarity yet on what we can do”

    Very poor if you were pushed into a refund by the call centre. Had you held out for a reroute, which would have been possible as of yesterday, you would have been able claim downgrade compensation from BA of around 75% of the original ticket price (less tax and airport fees, but with the Air Passenger Duty difference added on), and got on the same flights in economy as you’ve rebooked yourself.

    With that option closed off you should absolutely get all of the seat selection fees and service charges back.

    A very disappointing response from gold BAEC line regarding booking onto KUL-LHR with MAS.
    Our experience is, having booked a return flight from SGN via KUL to LHR with MAS and BA, our KUL to LHR flight was cancelled. A call to BAEC gold line resulted in re-booked flights via DOH, both flights approx 8hr30. We accepted these as the only (at the time) available option, giving up a 14hr flight with good rest opportunity.
    Subsequently BA announce that they are now re-booking onto MAS via KUL with similar timings to original flt. Again called BAEC gold line only to be told, like many others making same request (according to BAEC agent), that only 1 change was possible. He suggested that if I wanted to take it further I should raise a complaint with BA, which he has been suggesting to all customers in this situation. Let’s hope a deluge of complaints will see BA do the right thing!
