British Airways will now rebook Kuala Lumpur passengers on Malaysia Airlines

As we covered in an exclusive story last week, British Airways has suspended the launch of flights to Kuala Lumpur until 1st April 2025.

This is due to mechanical issues with multiple Boeing 787 aircraft which have caused revisions to the winter flying schedule.

To date, BA has only been willing to rebook passengers on Qatar Airways or to Singapore on British Airways. This has now changed.

BA will now rebook Kuala Lumpur passengers on Malaysia Airlines and Cathay

A rebooking arrangement has now been made with Malaysia Airlines and Cathay Pacific.

The Malaysia Airlines guidance notes are here.

You can either:

  • fly direct to Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Airlines
  • fly to Singapore with British Airways and take a Malaysia Airlines connection to Kuala Lumpur
  • fly to Bangkok with British Airways and take a Malaysia Airlines connection to Kuala Lumpur

The Cathay Pacific guidance notes are here.

This is less attractive. As well as having multiple blackout dates, you are only allowed an Economy flight between Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur. Flights from London to Hong Kong must be on British Airways.

Whilst British Airways does not usually allow multiple changes to bookings, feedback in our comments is that people who had been moved to Qatar Airways have been successful in asking to be moved to a direct Malaysia Airlines flight. I don’t know where you stand if you accepted a BA re-route to Singapore after being told that you had to make your own way to KL.

Booked x2 PAX Club World with miles/companion voucher. Very happy to now be flying via Doha in Qatar’s new Qsuites for both flights. BA’s long haul business and even first isn’t remotely in the same league.

My only gripe is that BA sent out the cancellation email before agents on the Gold line had been given direction around re-booking options and was told to phone back the following day.

    • Michael Gell says:

I’ve flown the club suite and q suite and they’re not that different. I was happy with both tbh

  • Paul Rainbow says:

I rebooked last week and was offered Singapore on BA. I asked if they would book the SIN- KUL leg and was told no. Rang up today to request the SIN-KUL leg be added based on this post and was told as I had accepted the original offer I couldn’t have them added. Seems crazy that I now have to pay for the SIN-KUL flights because I called up last week versus someone who calls up today would get it included.

    • polly says:

You could try calling up again, and ask for it to be re booked. Some have had luck doing this.

    • Just Nick says:

If you insist they will book the whole trip under one booking reference. That is what happened to me but sorted now.

    • Shafted-by-BA says:

I’m in the same boat. I was booked on a premium cabin and cancelled on just weeks before my flight. With little time left and being told last week refund was the only option (effectively risking thousands of ££ on such a short notice), I accepted SIN, on the basis BA was unable to offer flights to KUL. I’ve tried once again today, based on the new guidance, to get them to rebook me to KUL but they refused. I’ve filed a formal complain not just for the additional cost but also for initially being misled about the lack of a KUL option.

    • Garethgerry says:

Just keep trying. Did you tell them when you accepted Singapore you still expected BA to get you to KUL..

ASK to be moved to direct , as you were told last week it was not an option. You only accepted Singapore because BA agent gave you wrong , incorrect information, thus it is their duty to rectify situation

      • Muskysman says:

Just tried again this morning to get moved from flight just to SIN. BA totally unwilling to consider in anyway of getting from SIN to KL. Just keep spouting same old nonsense about only able to book rewards on rewards and it doesn’t matter if we were misled last weekend. If you accepted the change you are on your own.

        • Mark says:

Are you still trying to pursue it through the call centre? If you raised a complaint it will probably take a while to get a response to that, but I thought you’d booked a car from SIN?

          • Muskysman says:

Yeah we have car booked provisionally and have put complaint in. Just about to board another BA flight back to UK and just received email from BA priority team asking for some verification details in relation to booking …. So hope springs eternal

  • Wis says:

Pleased that there is now a good range of options available, and glad to have waited as our travel plans are not imminent.

Does anyone know if there is a time limit to rebook since the policy is set? I appreciate that there are cons to waiting in terms of availability, but putting that aside I am keen to know if we have some more time to consider options and dates.

    • sloth says:

you can rebook whenever you are ready…

    • Mark says:

They appear to remain in force until the affected travel dates have passed. The guidance for Hong Kong is still in force and that was issued in July. It may change though, as you can see from various amendments have been made to the others on the disruptions site.

    • JDB says:

@Wis – there is no time limit but the rebooking guidelines are subject to change at any time without notice (and often do change) and of course availability may dry up from both re-bookings and naturally.

  • James says:

Just got off the phone with BA. Very helpful agent. London-kl route rebooked on MH to suit 2 connecting flights and similarly for return flight.

  • Wildal says:

As a past critic of BA customer service I have been pleasantly surprised at the efforts made by CS recently to resolve flight changes/cancellations. I asked to change our cancelled flights from KL to Sing (PE) with a date that had become more convenient for us without any real difficulty. The flight booked from KL to LHR/MCR were v good value and wanted to keep the PE element if we could realising that there was unlikely to be a comparable product so really can’t complain

  • Shelley says:

we were offered no other option than a refund last week – so we applied for that.

  • Gillian McKenna says:

Our cancelled booking was made using a 241 voucher. We are travelling from Edinburgh, so I called to ask to be routed EDI DOH KUL with Qatar. I was advised that this would not be possible as there needs to be Avios availability in the Business cabin. For my dates there is no reward availability, but there are cash seats available. Can anyone advise me if this is correct. Much appreciated.

    • Numpty says:

There hasn’t been a specific QR rebooking policy issued. Is MH via LHR not an option?

It is not correct. Twice (Covid and now) I’ve had 241 redemptions changed from BA to QR for Edi to KUL. They are allowed to rebook you into a revenue seat, on QR that’s fare class R as a minimum in business class.

Just keeping trying until they give you the correct answer.

      • Mark says:

It is correct in this instance and as things stand. As you say, no specific QR rebooking policy has been issued for the KUL cancellation so you’re limited by the standard policy which says redemptions can only be rebooked on QR from redemption inventory.

I’ve also been trying to get rebooked on Qatar from Heathrow, both before and after the CX/MH policies were issued on Thursday with no success, although I’ve now opted to take a couple of redemption seats that were available on BA127 connecting to QR852 in Doha for our travel date.

Others have reported success (albeit that it is not obvious in all cases whether they were rebooked into redemption inventory), so you might eventually get there if speak to enough agents. However, it would fall outside of the policies as they stand today, and now there are reasonable options allowed with MH that meet BA’s legal reroute obligations that may be less likely.

It’s always possible that the policies will change. Depending on travel date, you could choose to hold off to see if that works in your favour, weighing up the risk that it could work against you, especially if you leave it too late for availability on the MH via LHR option.

  • stuart appleton says:

We were told Singapore was only option last week’s cancellation of direct BA flights to KUL. Rebooked to Singapore after request to go via BKK was refused. Yesterday called to see if new guidance would allow us to fly via BKK or travel on to KUL but firmly told no further change was allowed. Very shoddy treatment by BA for early responder to cancellation email.
