Brunchgate – aggressive BA service cuts resume

We have been sceptical about the ‘£7bn investment programme’ from British Airways, because when we peered behind the curtain we struggled to see anything there.

Whilst replacing life-expired assets is, of course, ‘investment’, it isn’t the same as taking pro-active steps to improve the customer experience.

One example is the new, bigger overhead bins being installed on new short-haul aircraft deliveries. These are great, solving cabin baggage issues at a stroke. However, is BA spending money on retro-fitting them to its existing aircraft as many other airlines have done? No.

The biggest structural issue with the airline business is that most of your costs are fixed. Fuel costs are fixed. Aircraft leasing costs (or debt repayments) are fixed. Staff numbers are set by law and pay scales are fixed in the medium term. Whilst it seems petty to start attacking the in-flight food budget, it is one of very few levers to pull.

From 15th October, two new measures have been introduced. One is just crackpot. Both are cost cutting.

Breakfast …. for lunch

BA has introduced a brunch service to all long haul flights departing between 8.30am and 11.29am.

Whilst the logic here is obviously a bit crazy in theory …. passengers departing at 11am have almost certainly had breakfast in the lounge if not at home …. it is even crazier in practice.

Since food service cannot start until the aircraft is at cruising altitude, anyone at the back of Club World won’t be getting fed until around 1.30pm. Just the time for a cheap airline breakfast.

Even more bizarrely, the rest of the menu is unchanged. You get an appetiser. You get a dessert. You are offered wine with your meal.

I don’t know how many people have eggs on sourdough paired with wine, followed by a cheeseboard or chocolate tart, for breakfast at home ….

The new First Class menu

As an example, the 11.20am New York JFK flight was previously offering the following main course options in First Class for your post-take off meal:

  • grilled lamb rack
  • chicken wellington
  • grilled halibut and shrimp sauce
  • vegetarian kofta in korma sauce

It now offers:

  • chicken / sausage / mushrooms / hash browns
  • prawn salad
  • poached egg on sourdough
  • pancakes

It’s even weirder when you see the full menu. This is what is now served in First Class if you depart before 11.29am:

  • amuse bouche (a cut from the previous selection of canapes)

followed by your choice of:

  • smoked salmon
  • roasted artichoke
  • butternut squash and coconut soup

followed by one of the breakfast dishes listed above, followed by:

  • chocolate tart
  • fresh fruit

followed by a cheeseboard.

Based on feedback from a friend of mine who spoke to the crew, not a single passenger on his flight in First had the pancakes and no-one in Club World had the waffles.

The new Club World menu

If you’re in business class, here is a typical brunch menu – it is actually called ‘The Great British Brunch’ on the menu.

A choice of appetisers from:

  • a fruit plate
  • smoked salmon
  • goat’s cheese and grilled artichoke
  • cheese and crackers

followed by

  • chicken / sausage / mushrooms / hash browns
  • cheese frittatta
  • Belgian waffles

followed by

  • chocolate marble slice (no alternatives)

followed by coffee and liqueurs.

It’s just weird.

The upside is that it will probably be scrapped before Christmas, so if you want to try it out I recommend you book now.

Interestingly, one person on Flyertalk who complained about his Club World brunch has been offered real money in compensation (well, a BA voucher, but near enough to cash). The amount was described as ‘generous’.

In a second article tomorrow we’ll look at the cuts to food service in Club World and First Class for flights departing after 9pm.

PS. Don’t forget that, if you are looking for good business class food, Qatar Airways has just introduced a caviar service on flights from many airports including London. This is on top of the existing meal service.

  • Lady London says:

Oooh, Such a nicely laid out Qatar Airways caviar tray in your articlre about British Airways pulling any main course from Club menus from so many of their flights….

Good article. I would really like to meet the person at British Airways that came up with this.

  • Jack Sims says:

We flew to and from Dubai last week with BA in first. The Food on the way out was great, normal First Menu. Last Tuesday we flew back on the 9.05am flight with Brucch. The cabin crew told us it was dine on demand, I told them that why would we want Brunch or Breakfast when its dine on demand? The food was terrible, Pancakes where terrible and the rest of the food was as bad. No cheese and biscuits, crew went and asked in Business and Economy and no cheese and crackers. The cabin crew where embrassed and said that this was the worst food they have seen in First. I then come back to see this is been rolled out from LHR. Who ever in their right mind thinks this is a good idea! I am flyoing to BGI in December at 10.35, will have eaten brekafast in the lounge, why would I want brunch at 13.00pm? Surley we want Lunch. I have alreayd complained and had a £150 compensation for 3 adults. I do hope that this decsion is reversed as the crew felt so embrassed with the options. I dread how this will go down with passengers. Hopefully by December, this will be replaced by a christmas menu

    • executiveclubber says:

Hope that 150 is per adult at least as this is just pants

      • Jack Sims says:

That works out at £50.00 per person, I was in two minds to complain further

    • Jon says:

You should get more. We got £300 per passenger for a fleeting crash of IFE in F that worked most of the way.

  • Mrs Clare Wheeler says:

This is clearly bonkers and it really makes you wonder why we stay loyal to BA!! I’m travelling long haul with my family in November and if we get served this there will be a lot of complaints and unhappy people – Don’t pay £1000’s for this !! What are they trying to do…

    • Russell G says:

Why we stay loyal? Answer: Avios, Amex vouchers, largest network from UK, Concorde Lounge, First Wing, low taxes+fees vs Virgin, Club Suites and OneWorld alliance.

      • JDB says:

Exactly, that’s why this change will have zero effect on passenger numbers.

      • degsy says:

Agreed apart from the network point. Largest network from London certainly. But as has been observed on various occasions before, it’s pretty slim pickings in the provinces.

        • Russell G says:

Are Virgin better from the provinces? Who else do you recommend?

          • degsy says:

Yeah, VS definitely has a better offering than BA outside London, certainly if you want to go West (there are a number of routes out of Mcr).
Going East, then Qatar flies from a number of regional airports (you can use Avios but not 2-4-1 vouchers).

  • Can2 says:

I’ll never understand why anyone pays cash for BA’s Club service. What a waste

    • meta says:

Cash or Avios it has become the same thing give how much people have been boosting their balances.

      • Occasional Ranter says:

Yep. Avios is basically just the way to realistic business class fares with BA now, not a loyalty programme.

  • Navara says:

    What’s the Vegan options

    • executiveclubber says:

In F, a fruit salad followed by a small arrangement of lukewarm vegetables and then fruit salad for dessert. Not even kidding. My partner’s meal from PVG. 14 hours. She was very hungry and pretty pissed off!

      • TGLoyalty says:

My advice if you have any sort of dietary requirement is eat before the flight and bring a back up

  • Joe says:

This is actually insane. Thank goodness I saw this post, was about to book a pre noon flight to the US and have booked on an alternative carrier. The premium I would pay to fly BA over United on routes to the US is increasingly 0. Maybe negative.

  • Freeminder says:

“I don’t know how many people have eggs on sourdough paired with wine, followed by a cheeseboard or chocolate tart, for breakfast at home ….”

    That tickled me!

    • NorthernLass says:

Reminds me of the comedy sketch where a Michael Winner-type would order all that, plus a Curly-Wurly or bag of Monster Munch 😂

    • Russell G says:

This is pretty much my regular Saturday morning except the wine is subbed out for Espresso Martini or Irish Coffee!

    • TGLoyalty says:

      They don’t … but for Brunch …

  • NorthernLass says:

Just waiting to take off from ATH and the menu is –
    Salad
Welsh lamb shoulder/vegetable korma/lemon pepper chicken salad
    Tiramisu
    Cheese
Not sure how they think long-haul F pax will be happy with a menu which sounds rather inferior to this!
Marble cake 🤷‍♀️ I’m sure you can get a whole one for a quid at Tesco 😂

    • qc says:

I had similar to that coming back from EFL on Saturday.

    • JDB says:

It has been a long standing mystery why the CE food is so much better than CW. If they simply served the longer distance CE food in CW, it would be a huge step forward.
