We have been sceptical about the ‘£7bn investment programme’ from British Airways, because when we peered behind the curtain we struggled to see anything there.

Whilst replacing life-expired assets is, of course, ‘investment’, it isn’t the same as taking pro-active steps to improve the customer experience.

One example is the new, bigger overhead bins being installed on new short-haul aircraft deliveries. These are great, solving cabin baggage issues at a stroke. However, is BA spending money on retro-fitting them to its existing aircraft as many other airlines have done? No.

The biggest structural issue with the airline business is that most of your costs are fixed. Fuel costs are fixed. Aircraft leasing costs (or debt repayments) are fixed. Staff numbers are set by law and pay scales are fixed in the medium term. Whilst it seems petty to start attacking the in-flight food budget, it is one of very few levers to pull.

From 15th October, two new measures have been introduced. One is just crackpot. Both are cost cutting.

Breakfast …. for lunch

BA has introduced a brunch service to all long haul flights departing between 8.30am and 11.29am.

Whilst the logic here is obviously a bit crazy in theory …. passengers departing at 11am have almost certainly had breakfast in the lounge if not at home …. it is even crazier in practice.

Since food service cannot start until the aircraft is at cruising altitude, anyone at the back of Club World won’t be getting fed until around 1.30pm. Just the time for a cheap airline breakfast.

Even more bizarrely, the rest of the menu is unchanged. You get an appetiser. You get a dessert. You are offered wine with your meal.

I don’t know how many people have eggs on sourdough paired with wine, followed by a cheeseboard or chocolate tart, for breakfast at home ….

As an example, the 11.20am New York JFK flight was previously offering the following main course options in First Class for your post-take off meal:

  • grilled lamb rack
  • chicken wellington
  • grilled halibut and shrimp sauce
  • vegetarian kofta in korma sauce 

It now offers:

  • chicken / sausage / mushrooms / hash browns
  • prawn salad
  • poached egg on sourdough
  • pancakes

It’s even weirder when you see the full menu. This is what is now served in First Class if you depart before 11.29am:

  • amuse bouche (a cut from the previous selection of canapes)

followed by your choice of:

  • smoked salmon
  • roasted artichoke
  • butternut squash and coconut soup

followed by one of the breakfast dishes listed above, followed by:

  • chocolate tart
  • fresh fruit

followed by a cheeseboard.

Based on feedback from a friend of mine who spoke to the crew, not a single passenger on his flight in First had the pancakes and no-one in Club World had the waffles.

If you’re in business class, here is a typical brunch menu – it is actually called ‘The Great British Brunch’ on the menu.

A choice of appetisers from:

  • a fruit plate
  • smoked salmon
  • goat’s cheese and grilled artichoke
  • cheese and crackers

followed by

  • chicken / sausage / mushrooms / hash browns
  • cheese frittatta
  • Belgian waffles

followed by

  • chocolate marble slice (no alternatives)

followed by coffee and liqueurs.

It’s just weird.

The upside is that it will probably be scrapped before Christmas, so if you want to try it out I recommend you book now.

Interestingly, one person on Flyertalk who complained about his Club World brunch has been offered real money in compensation (well, a BA voucher, but near enough to cash). The amount was described as ‘generous’.

PS. Don’t forget that, if you are looking for good business class food, Qatar Airways has just introduced a caviar service on flights from many airports including London. This is on top of the existing meal service.

    If you’re going to do brunch, do brunch well.

    I’d be happy with the fruit plate, followed by an ADB, but the thought of chocolate tart/marble cake to follow isn’t appealing.

    The other mix&match soup, cheese, eggs, then chocolate is genuinely making me feel queasy as I read this with my morning croissant.

    Ever long for the days when senior people had a sensible secretary to guide them?

    Anything after 930am ought to be rest of the day not breakfast, in both Club World and Club Europe .. especially if say travelling eastwards as it will be afternoon by the time you arrive. Extending breakfast to late is sheer madness.

      I’m surprised it’s plural.

      It doesn’t say what the pancake comes with either. Is it Scotch, is it crepe, with bacon, jam, lemon?

        Scotch pancakes, even in Waitrose cost only 75p for 6 so I reckon it’ll be one of those. And it will be brand named.

    Slightly off topic but I always find it laughably quaint the way BA invites Club passengers to have ‘a drink from the bar’. Where is this mythical bar? Oh, they mean that iron trolley?!

    My recent First flight was a great cost cutting measure by BA, it was a return flight from Mex and apart from pre takeoff champagne, there was non apart from 1 bottle of Rose Lanson, for a cabin of 7 people! Business also had non, apparently BA have started to load less so the outbound crew have a habit of using it all. That in itself is not new, but it was said to be they are running into the issue much more because less is loaded!

      Apparently, whilst Whispering Angel is now on the Club wine menu, only 2 bottles get loaded for a 70+ seat 777 cabin. As everything else is £5 per bottle everyone goes for it and it disappears after a couple of rows.

        Compare a recent Friday evening Virgin flight to IAD in a full UC cabin, no problem getting a (large!) glass of W-A with the pre-arrival meal.

    I cut BA a fair amount of slack but this change is genuinely ridiculous and will make me avoid morning flights with them

      Qatar F is basically upgrade class like AA F used to be before it got scrapped. Moral of the story is to not pay cash for Qatar F (not defending the bizarre decision here, just stating the facts).

    The grass isn’t always greener at QR. The other half and I recently flew MLE – DOH in First (cash fare).

    We were the only two people in First. Which is great, right?

    Wrong. Qatar had basically catered one of everything. Only one of us could have the caviar. Only one of us the lobster tail. Only one of us the beef main.

    Yes, yes, very much first world problems but still. The icing on the cake was when I reached out to QR to complain. I received a response (two months later) basically saying tough, that’s the way we do things, CYA.

    QR may be great in a lot of ways but in others, they’ve a long long way to go. Especially when things go wrong.

      If that had happened to us I would have made the crew divide everything into half portions!

      Been theer twice with Qatar on that route, unless the cabin is busy they really underload it! The crew did actually split things for us and ended up with a mini tasting menu. Not great at all, but the crew at least were and the drinks were free flow!

    I hope your right and well hold you to that! Of course someone from BA will be reading this thread and delay scrapping it until the new year!

    I don’t have any long haul BA flights until next February so hopefully will be immune from this.

    Saying that AA does include some “brunch” items on its late morning LHR departures menu but it’s still basically a proper lunch menu.
