Aer Lingus has announced new benefits for AerClub members flying on British Airways and American Airlines.

It’s not the same as full oneworld alliance membership, but it seems to be as good as AerClub members can expect for now.

Aer Lingus AerClub members now get elite benefits when flying BA and AA

Elite members of Aer Lingus AerClub will receive the following benefits on British Airways and American Airlines depending on their tier.

I have noted which Aer Lingus tiers receive which benefits when flying with BA – the situation may differ on American Airlines:

  • priority check-in (Silver, Platinum, Concierge plus anyone travelling on the same booking can use Business Class desks)
  • priority boarding (Silver, Platinun, Concierge plus anyone travelling on the same booking will receive Group 3 boarding)
  • fast track security (Platinum and Concierge members, plus one guest)
  • lounge access (Platinum and Concierge members, plus one guest, travelling on a transatlantic BA itinerary can access lounges in UK, Europe, USA, Canada, Mexico and Israel)
  • additional baggage allowance (Platinum can bring an extra checked bag on economy flight, Concierge members can bring an extra checked bag on economy and business flights – neither apply to ‘Hand Baggage Only’ flights)

These are all ‘day of travel’ benefits. There are no benefits which you can use in advance of travel, such as free seat selection.

The new rules are effective immediately for flights on American Airlines and from 2nd December for flights on British Airways.

You will need to add your AerClub number to your British Airways or American Airlines booking to receive these benefits, which means that you would be earning miles and status credits in AerClub and not Executive Club or AAdvantage.

It is now three years since Aer Lingus joined the Atlantic Joint Business, which is the joint venture between BA, American Airlines, Iberia, Finnair and LEVEL which controls all transatlantic flights on those carriers. The JV is meant to be ‘metal neutral’ – ie you would earn identical miles and status credits irrespective of who you fly. It does not actually work that way but these changes bring it a little closer.

Remember that British Airways Executive Club members have been able to earn tier points on Aer Lingus flights since April 2024. This now includes ‘R’ and ‘I’ class – the cheapest business class tickets – which were originally excluded.

    Just flown on a BA holiday which qualifies for double tier points. My flying companion used an AerClub membership with the booking. Just wondering does anyone know if the double tier points will be added to the AerClub membership, or does this only appply for BA executive members.

    Slightly off topic but a timely Aer Lingus post as I just checked in for a flight tomorrow. Has anyone any recent experience with the AerClub Reward redemption hand luggage policy? Lots of information stating that you have to bring your 10kg bag in the plane instead of placing into the hold but during online check in there’s no reference to the fact it’s a reward booking and suggests you must place it in the hold or face a €35 penalty.

    Are they able to identify at the gate that you made a Reward booking, even if it’s a part Avios part cash booking?

      Suspect it will show on your boarding pass. For example on Sunday I travelled to Brussels, I hold Platinum status with AerClub. On the same booking my friend holds no status. Our boarding passes differed. Mine clearly stated must bring hand luggage onboard. I would suggest yours will also as it was reward booking, or was it part pay? Either way you will know once you get your digital boarding pass.

        I have my boarding pass and it doesn’t state anything about having to bring hand luggage on board. It’s a reward flight booking but one where I didn’t choose the 4,000 + taxes and fees option. It’s clear that I am able to put a 20kg bag into the hold and bring a 10kg hand luggage bag but it’s not clear at all whether I could get penalised for putting or not putting 3 bags in the hold.

        I was not able to pay to bring my bag on when I checked in 48 hours before the flight but it’s not clear if it was actually sold out or I couldn’t purchase it because I am already compelled to bring my bag on board.

        Was yours a reward booking or do you have status? Or both?

      As far as I am aware, you can check in your 10kg bag free of charge, with Aer Lingus. There is a charge if you bring your 10kg bag on board, which you can purchase online, and if you have silver status or higher it is free to bring your 10kg bag on board.

        Thanks, the baggage policy for their rewards flight is what’s confusing me though.

        Their baggage policy page says

        “When is a 10kg carry-on bag included?

        Some customers will have a 10kg carry-on bag included in their booking, please see the list below. If a 10kg bag is included, you must take this on board with you. You will not be permitted to drop this bag off at check-in.

        AerClub – Silver, Platinum and Concierge AerClub members (Members only, not travelling companions)
        AerClub Reward Flight – on all AerClub Reward Flight bookings ”

        The Reward Flight Portal where I booked the flights says

        But the online check in process and my boarding pass make no reference to having to bring my hand luggage on are that it was a reward booking. It says its easy saver fare.

        I faced the issue a few months ago and to be safe I just packed one large 1 20kg bags rather than 3 10kg bags. Would really like to actually get to the bottom of what I’m required to do with a carry on bag though. Was hoping someone had recent experience.

      My upcoming DUB-LHR economy redemption booked via EI has — according to the EI app — booked into “saver” fare class with 10kg carry on and 20kg checked shown in the booking summary (people icon).

    That’s what mine said too. Don’t be surprised to find at online check in time that there’s no reference to the 10kg carry on bag unless you have status.

    Means your ability to bring your bag on board will be completely at the whim of whoever you encounter at a desk. I tried to explain the situation when I arrived at LHR and any attempt to reconcile the situation was automatically shut down.

    I came across a flyer talk post from some time ago also trying to make sense of the situation and it feels like an underlying IT issue at fault. Think I’ll reach out to Aer Lingus on my return to try get some sort of explanation. Until then I’m going to assume that I cannot bring on my hand luggage even though all info at time of booking says I must.
