IHG’s Kimpton Los Monteros hotel opens in Marbella

Whilst I wasn’t hugely impressed by Kimpton Aysla Mallorca (review here), the chain is pushing on with its Spanish expansion.

Kimpton Los Monteros Marbella (website here) opened last week. IHG took the shuttered The Hotel Los Monteros and refurbished it.

The hotel is at the foothills of the Sierra Blanca mountain range between Malaga and the Strait of Gibraltar. Malaga is a 40 minute drive whilst Gibraltar is an hour away. It is advertised as being 400 metres from the beach and five minutes from ‘the heart of the city’.

Whilst the facilities sound similar to those offered at Kimpton Mallorca – four restaurants and bars, two swimming pools, a gym, a spa – it will hopefully have larger grounds. It is big enough to have tennis courts.

It remains to be seen if this will become an iconic European Kimpton hotel (eg Paris, London if you avoid the base rooms) or another victim of corporate pressure to roll out the brand as quickly as possible (eg Amsterdam, Mallorca).

Kimpton Los Monteros Marbella

It is designed as:

“a tribute to the Mediterranean lifestyle and Marbella’s golden years in the 1970s”

There is something about the photographs on the hotel website which appeals to me. I was impressed by the ‘jet set era’ look of Four Seasons Astir Palace in Greece which also took a 1960s/70s theme, as well as the 70’s style pool area of The Ned in Doha where I stayed a couple of years ago. I may try this new Kimpton out as spring kicks in.

The Kimpton Marbella website is here.

Prices are very high for a property yet to be tried and tested. I’ve been keeping an eye and spotted very little value nights for a try and see.

Los Monteros used to be “the” Marbella hotel

I haven’t been to a Spanish resort in years – what’s the deal these days with smokers? Used to drive me mad – you’d fight for a sunbed around the pool, or bag a nice table at the pool bar for lunch, only for someone to light up beside you, and you had a 50/50 chance of being able to use your own balcony! Is that still the case or do the more upmarket resorts like this have designated areas? No pronlem with people smoking if they choose to, but I actively avoid any places where it will affect me, therefore have avoided Spain and most of the Med for years!

We have a new Kimpton opening near us in the Algarve this summer (Kimpton Atlantico Algarve) and in the same complex there will be a Marriott and a Westin. They are at Salgados and are refurbs/rebrands.

What’s the driving time to Faro typically like?

Hyatt are also taking on the Dom Pedro Villamoura as a Regency. If you know the location perhaps you can comment if that sounds promising – they’re certainly short on European resorts.

Yes I saw that the other day – seems to have slipped under the radar, newswise. Looks like a 2-stage renovation first though with only part of it done by Summer 2025 and the rest by Summer 26.

A lot of the ‘photographs’ look like renders to me, albeit quite convincing at first glance. Sloppy compositing on the woman in the white dress holding the rose in the main image at the top of their website though!

  • Ray S says:

It certainly used to be a lovely hotel, with the beach club “Cabane” a short buggy ride down the hill – I am not sure this is still managed by the hotel. The location is a little isolated, you will need a car.

  • Michael C says:

1970s Marbella was mainly non-extradited criminals and Torremolinos overflow!

    • NorthernLass says:

There are still plenty of those but they’re slightly more discreet these days. It’s quieter since the Russians haven’t been there, as well!

      • Michael C says:

A friend in Asturias told me this week that the Russians are now buying up places around Llanes – surreal!!
