American Express has launched a new deal with the Leading Hotels of the World marketing group.

You will receive £100 cashback when you spend £600 by 14th July.

The offer is valid globally. For once, an Amex hotel cashback offer can be used in North America, South America, Africa and Asia (plus one hotel in Australia!) as well as Europe.

How does it work?

As usual, you need to see if you are targeted for the deal via the ‘Offers’ tab of the Amex website or app. Remember to check for each card that you own. Click ‘Save to Card’ if you see it.

Here is the small print:

  • You get £100 cashback when you spend £600 or more
  • Cumulative spend counts, which can be across different hotels
  • The offer runs to 14th July
  • In theory, you need to pay at check-out for the bonus to trigger, not prepay (unless, of course, you prepay your stay and then spend £600 on food, spa etc in the property)

Remember that the 2.99% American Express FX fee does NOT count towards the £600. If you spend exactly £600 in a UK hotel, it triggers the £100. If you spend exactly £600 in an overseas hotel, it will NOT trigger the £600 because the £600 shown on your statement is actually £582 plus 2.99% FX fee.

The list of participating hotels is here (PDF).

The UK hotel list is quite thin:

Remember that if you are booking a Leading Hotels of the World property there is no requirement to book via the LHW website to get the bonus as long as you pay at check-out.

Some – not many, admittedly – hotels on the list are part of other chains, allowing you to double-dip with elite benefits and points. I spotted Melia, Capella (Global Hotel Alliance), Kempinski (Global Hotel Alliance) and Anantara (Global Hotel Alliance) properties.

Before you book, you should enquire via our luxury hotel booking partner Emyr Thomas about extra benefits he can get you, such as free breakfast, upgrades or a $100 hotel credit. You can contact Emyr via the form on this page of HfP.

PS. An offer for £100 cashback on £400 spend with The Standard, London has also appeared. This hotel is now part of Hyatt but is NOT yet participating in World of Hyatt. There is a chance it is integrated before the offer ends on 18th May.

Do we have to book the hotel from the LHW website OR any booking with an eligible hotel from the list will also qualify for the offer? I have booked a hotel which is part of LHW but from the hotel website instead of LHW. Would that booking be eligible for this offer?

Just came off an online chat with the Amex Rep, was advised the pre-payment put through on my Amex Reward CC for the Lesante Blu (Zakynthos) didn’t trigger the cashback as the T&C states checkout spend only. Lesson learnt I guess, check the small print!

      They lied to you.

If the hotel uses the same card terminal as they use on reception, it (obviously) counts. In 99% of cases this happens.

The only reason it wouldn’t count is if the hotel owners head office processes pre-paid bookings but if your statement has the hotel name on it this won’t be the case. It is far more likely Amex has miscoded the hotel and is checking for the wrong merchant ID before paying.

Thanks for the reply Rob, that’s very interesting but do I have any practical recourse to Amex in this situation? It seems like they can lie (your words, not mine!) to customers and fall back on oblique T&Cs to avoid paying.

        • Rob says:

You shouldn’t have told them you pre-paid. If you’d not said that, they would have gone and investigated the issue, probably an incorrect merchant code.

If you’re lucky, in a few months there will be 10 similar complaints about this hotel not paying, Amex will look into it, find the error and retrocredit you.

          • 2cups says:

I didn’t tell them I’d pre-paid! For what it’s worth, I’ve just drafted a strongly worded letter of complaint, as the “checkout spend only” term is in my view highly ambiguous and it’s not clear based on that wording for the average consumer it doesn’t apply to online “checkout” spend.
