easyJet’s CEO confirms loyalty scheme plans as we visit the new Southend base

Three weeks ago we told you, exclusively, that easyJet was planning to launch a loyalty scheme later this year.

For legal reasons our story contained a number of ‘allegedly’, ‘rumoured’, ‘might’ etc phrases but we believed it to be true.

I was with easyJet CEO Kenton Jarvis on Monday at London Southend airport and asked him directly if the HfP story was correct.

Kenton said that he had read the article. Whilst easyJet is not going to launch a loyalty scheme imminently, it is something that they are looking at.

Kenton sees a weak spot for British Airways in early 2026 when those who have failed to retain their status for 2026/27 are looking for options.

The story was immediately picked up by Reuters:

What is happening with easyJet at London Southend?

We were at Southend for the launch of easyJet’s new base at the airport. This is easyJet’s 10th UK base following the Birmingham launch last year.

Whilst easyJet has been flying from Southend for a while now, it has been using aircraft based elsewhere.

As of this week there are three A320neo aircraft based permanently at London Southend. This is important in terms of jobs – the pilots will live locally (it turns out the daughter of Southend’s mayor is an easyJet First Officer!), the cabin crew will live locally and the maintenance staff will live locally.

This summer will see easyJet operate up to 122 flights per week from Southend. It is the only easyJet base where every flight is also available via easyJet Holidays – this is very much a leisure base.

Here is the easyJet network from London Southend:

As we’ve written on HfP before, London Southend is underrated if you live or work in London. There are three trains per hour from Liverpool Street and Stratford, it is 52 minutes from Liverpool Street and the railway station is literally two minutes walk from the terminal entrance.

With little of the queuing or delays that impact Heathrow and, to a lesser extent, Gatwick, it’s a very pleasant airport to use and worth considering.

Generally smaller airports make for a better travelling experience yet all airports have ambitions to expand and hence make life worse for the average passenger. Like ‘Small Luxury Hotels of the World’, it would be great to see an airport operator concentrate on creating ‘Small Luxury Airports of the World’.

I prefer larger airports for their range of facilities.

      • John33 says:

Can you give some examples? Heathrow is the largest airport in Europe and is facilities are dire. Rail links that do not run early enough to get you there for the first set of flights, overcrowded lounges, drop-off and pick-up rip offs, horrendous aircraft taxi times due to congestion, etc etc. Terminal 4 looks dire and may as well be a provincial airport.

        • Richie says:

@John33 HKG is a good example of a large airport ttat works.

          • Andrew J says:

Singapore another example. I also enjoy lounges, and small airports rarely have anything which meets my required standard.

“Rail links that do not run early enough to get you there for the first set of flights,” I find it outrageous that airports want to reduce emissions and yet it’s impossible to actually get there by public transport, especially outside of London.

Flying QR from Terminal 4 is literally the best thing about Heathrow! Massively underutilised terminal rather than the Tube at rush hour vibe in T5, no need to trek out to a satellite, minimal security queues even without fast track. As a regular on QR from T4 and BA from T5, the QR J ground experience from T4 is actually more pleasant than flying as a GGL in F on BA.

Businesses in wanting to grow shock.

    • Richie says:

It’s already available for PJ flights and is known as Biggin Hill.

    • John33 says:

The fixed costs of an airport are simply too high for any airport to want to stay small.

  • Can says:

I think by “Dalman” you need Dalaman.

  • Thywillbedone says:

Wondering why Ryanair (and probably easyJet) don’t simply copy Wizzair’s discount club? We only fly them a couple of times a year yet joining that club and paying the annual fee still makes sense. Perhaps there isn’t the same amount of fat in the fares at Ryanair??

    • Nico says:

Margins are low, so hard to give fixed discounts, I guess wizzair is hoping that enough people pay for the club without flying, like the gyms. Ryanair one seems completely useless.

  • Nick G says:

Just need DSA to reopen again now for those that live north of the M25

    • CB Root says:

Well, the local pols say it’s on track but the lack of enthusiasm from private money tells its own story I think..

    • Thegasman says:

If you’re in that neck of the woods then KLM from Humberside ticks all the boxes for a small & convenient airport for long haul with connection at AMS.

DSA is a political vanity project that will not survive sandwiched between MAN, EMA & LBA which are all very well served by the low cost airlines.

  • Inman says:

The problem is both Heathrow and Gatwick are on Oyster and contactless zones. Travelling to/from these airports will cost £10 or less each way. Southend may be just an hour away but the train tickets cost over £20 each way. Imagine spending £40 on an easyjet flight and another £40 for the train tickets?

  • PeterK says:

The stated frequencies are a bit misleading, divide by 2 for the number of flights from Southend (SEN) e.g. Palma has 10 departures per week from SEN.

  • Patrick says:

This isn’t new, I remember back in 2019 that easyJet was toying with the idea already, then COVID put a stop to it.

    • Rob says:

Read the article linked in the first line.

      • Patrick says:

Fair point, mistake, I blame it on an early read with a lack of morning coffee 😊

  • Mark says:

Flew from sen yesterday to palma.

    Great little airport.
