Lufthansa launches its first ever American Express cashback deal

Here’s a surprise. Lufthansa has decided to follow its fellow Star Alliance member United Airlines and launch a cashback offer with American Express.

As far as I can remember, this is the first time that Lufthansa has run one.

Unfortunately, it’s not a knockout deal due to the short booking period.

Lufthansa launches its first ever American Express cashback deal

If you are targeted for this deal (and no-one in my family was) you will receive £300 cashback when you spend £2,500 on the Lufthansa website.

An alternative version offers £150 cashback when you spend £1,500.

The expiry date is 12th June.

Spend can be cumulative.

Historically a lot of HfP readers, including myself, have benefitted from aggressive Lufthansa long-haul sale deals from the UK. We haven’t seen one of these for a while now.

The small print is a bit of a mess. It doesn’t specifically say that flights must depart from the UK, but if you try to book one that doesn’t I suspect it may be ticketed locally and won’t trigger the cashback.

More importantly, it doesn’t specifically say which airlines you can book. The phrase ‘Lufthansa Airlines’ could mean multiple things. Just Lufthansa? Just Lufthansa Group airlines (Lufhansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels)?

I suspect that anything bookable via the Lufthansa website here will be OK but there is some risk if not booking on Lufthansa itself.

How to earn Star Alliance miles from UK credit cards

How to earn Star Alliance miles from UK credit cards (May 2025)

None of the Star Alliance airlines currently have a UK credit card.

There is, however, still a way to earn Star Alliance miles from a UK credit card

The route is via Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy hotel loyalty points convert to over 40 airlines at the rate of 3:1.

The best way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points is via the official Marriott Bonvoy American Express card. It comes with 20,000 points for signing up and 2 points for every £1 you spend. At 2 Bonvoy points per £1, you are earning (at 3:1) 0.66 airline miles per £1 spent on the card.

There is a preferential conversion rate to United Airlines – which is a Star Alliance member – of 2 : 1 if you convert 60,000 Bonvoy points at once.

The Star Alliance members which are Marriott Bonvoy transfer partners are: Aegean, Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, Avianca, Copa Airlines, Singapore Airlines, TAP Air Portugal, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines and United Airlines.
