What are the cheapest and priciest Virgin Upper Class redemptions under dynamic pricing?

Ever since Virgin Atlantic moved to ‘dynamic pricing’ for flight redemptions last year, the cost of Upper Class has been out of reach for most people.

I know that Virgin Atlantic is happy with the increase in Economy redemptions, now priced from just 6,000 Virgin Points each way.

I also know that there is disquiet about the removal of Upper Class as a realistic redemption option on most routes, especially the effect on those who are Upper Class cash flyers.

I thought we should take another look at Upper Class pricing. Luckily, a HfP reader has built an online tool, vseats.io, which scrapes the Reward Seat Checker page of the Virgin Atlantic website and lets you manipulate the data. It’s really rather clever.

Because you can rank reward pricing using vseats.io, I thought I’d look at each route for a seven night trip in Upper Class.

What I wanted to know was:

  • what is the cheapest possible redemption over the next 11 months for a week-long trip?
  • and, to avoid distortion due to one-off cheap deals, what is the 50th cheapest redemption day over the next 11 months?

I thought ’50th cheapest’ was an acceptable compromise. The very cheapest dates are usually when you don’t want to travel (eg New York in January) and taking the 50th lowest priced departure date weeds out a lot of that. It’s probably comparable to off-peak Avios pricing.

Of course, you still need flexibility when you travel to take advantage of this pricing. If you are tied to school holidays, or even tied to Saturday-to-Saturday holidays, you will pay more – often a LOT more.

Not all Virgin Atlantic routes operate 365 days per year. In such cases, the 50th cheapest date will be higher up the price range.

What are the cheapest Virgin Atlantic Upper Class redemptions?

I’ve listed the routes from cheapest to priciest.

I have shown Upper Class return pricing from London Heathrow for a seven night stay, searching across the full 11 month booking window.

Because of the way the system works, we can only look for the price of one seat. Do not assume you can book a couple, and definitely not a family, at these rates.

I have included the cost of an off-peak Club World Avios redemption for comparison.

Here’s a summary of the results assuming:

  • you value an Avios and a Virgin Point at 1p, so you can blend the points and cash elements to get an overall total cost
  • you take the ’50th cheapest day’ as a fair comparison with the off-peak Avios price

I think the list above sums up the current situation pretty well. Yes, there is some value out there in Upper Class for Virgin Points, but Riyadh, Bengaluru, Lagos etc are not key holiday routes.

    I have been monitoring the LHR-JNB route and on the day of release there is sensible points seats available in economy and PE (PE is about 40k). Then very occasionally a Business seat pops out at 61k. So it does look like saver tickets are available but are being gobbled up as soon as they are released.
    Does anybody have an idea what time they are released?

      Likewise but certainly poorer than before. Burned my last VS points on a return LHR-JNB April/May this year leaving Easter Sunday returning 12 May. Just over 200k return plus taxes plus an upgrade voucher as I recall

      It already has been if you try to book with points. Not on the reward seat checker page though.

      Seoul is available, I’ve managed to get to an outbound upper class saver at 67,500, inbound was expensive, best I could get for my dates was 150k (+plus I used a credit card voucher to make it 75k per passenger).

      Just booked yesterday LHR-ICN.
      35,000 in Upper Class with the lowest band £444 taxes and surcharges.
      Was happy with that, saving my voucher for another trip now.

    You’d think with softer demand to the US this summer now would be the primetime to refurbish their 787s, top to tail and finally get rid of those awful coffin seats

      Zero published plans to do this, although 7 of them will be scrapped when the 2nd batch of neos arrive. The rest aren’t going anywhere though ….

        It’s fine to dump them on Carribbean routes until they’re knackered to death but they’re using them on NYC and SFO routes regularly right now

      Anecdotal evidence from my own experience. 787 upper rewards seem to be consistently lower in price than A350/Neo reward pricing on routes where they run multiple flights a day.

        That’s not surprising, I and I suspect many others wouldn’t even consider booking an UC ticket on the 787.

            Completely agree with this, actually. I tend to sleep well on that flip bed, but get uncomfortable sitting because there’s little adjustment. Harder to take a quick nap too because of the faff of having to put it into bed mode. It’s deterred me from looking at them for Seoul, and I even chose KLM for Toronto instead of VS (from BHX which is closer anyway) because of both the 787 and the late departure from LHR

    I’ve decided to give up on Virgin for Upper redemptions and use it for short-notice cheap economy when it works out cheaper than the equivalent cash fare. Recently booked
    7.5k + £218 each LHR-TPA
    7.5k + £55 each MCO-LHR
    Cash fares were £700ish for standard Y. Reward seats in Premium were 20x as much, and Upper over 500k each way.
    Bid £55 each on a successful upgrade to Economy Delight outbound, which then (glitch?) turned the reward flight into a flex cash fare and netted us 11k points each! Had hoped to find a last-min Avios J flight home, but nothing came up so just had to suck up Y, and it didn’t kill us!

    There’s still value in points but sadly very rarely on the seats I’d like to be on.

      Yep, makes sense. Also for AF/KLM redemptions.

      I book for 5, so not interested in spending £6-700+ per pax on UC (in any of its guises!) to any destination, from the UK. Happy to spend the miles for UC, if ‘taxes’ and surcharges are low, on the inbound only.

    Just looked at EDI-MCO – the cheap flight was the last of the season outbound to Orlando.

    The last inbound was actually dearer than all the previous inbounds that month.

    Not a direct comparison like the others, but close given it’s the same country and both are major airports

    Brilliant website @matlo – I gave up on Virgin points before they announced the dynamic pricing, simply because the VS website was so convoluted for points searching (for me, others may have more understanding of it and more patience!)

    The existence of vseats.io may well encourage me to send some points in VS’ direction.
