What are the cheapest and priciest Virgin Upper Class redemptions under dynamic pricing?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Ever since Virgin Atlantic moved to ‘dynamic pricing’ for flight redemptions last year, the cost of Upper Class has been out of reach for most people.

I know that Virgin Atlantic is happy with the increase in Economy redemptions, now priced from just 6,000 Virgin Points each way.

I also know that there is disquiet about the removal of Upper Class as a realistic redemption option on most routes, especially the effect on those who are Upper Class cash flyers.

I thought we should take another look at Upper Class pricing. Luckily, a HfP reader has built an online tool, vseats.io, which scrapes the Reward Seat Checker page of the Virgin Atlantic website and lets you manipulate the data. It’s really rather clever.

Because you can rank reward pricing using vseats.io, I thought I’d look at each route for a seven night trip in Upper Class.

What I wanted to know was:

  • what is the cheapest possible redemption over the next 11 months for a week-long trip?
  • and, to avoid distortion due to one-off cheap deals, what is the 50th cheapest redemption day over the next 11 months?

I thought ’50th cheapest’ was an acceptable compromise. The very cheapest dates are usually when you don’t want to travel (eg New York in January) and taking the 50th lowest priced departure date weeds out a lot of that. It’s probably comparable to off-peak Avios pricing.

Of course, you still need flexibility when you travel to take advantage of this pricing. If you are tied to school holidays, or even tied to Saturday-to-Saturday holidays, you will pay more – often a LOT more.

Not all Virgin Atlantic routes operate 365 days per year. In such cases, the 50th cheapest date will be higher up the price range.

What are the cheapest Virgin Atlantic Upper Class redemptions?

I’ve listed the routes from cheapest to priciest.

I have shown Upper Class return pricing from London Heathrow for a seven night stay, searching across the full 11 month booking window.

Because of the way the system works, we can only look for the price of one seat. Do not assume you can book a couple, and definitely not a family, at these rates.

I have included the cost of an off-peak Club World Avios redemption for comparison.

The problem with Virgin Flying Club, in a nutshell

Here’s a summary of the results assuming:

  • you value an Avios and a Virgin Point at 1p, so you can blend the points and cash elements to get an overall total cost
  • you take the ’50th cheapest day’ as a fair comparison with the off-peak Avios price

Routes where Virgin Points beat Avios:

Riyadh, Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Lagos

Routes where Avios beat Virgin Points:

Toronto, New York JFK, Washington DC, Las Vegas, Dubai, Miami, Tampa, Barbados, San Francisco, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Orlando, Boston, Seattle, Antigua, Grenada, Cancun, Cape Town, Maldives, Johannesburg

I think the list above sums up the current situation pretty well. Yes, there is some value out there in Upper Class for Virgin Points, but Riyadh, Bengaluru, Lagos etc are not key holiday routes.

Let’s look at the pricing in detail.

Riyadh seems like a bargain, can get cheap connecting flights from there to anywhere else.

  • tomtom135 says:

Flew UC yesterday from LHR and felt so relieved not to walk into that disgraceful 787-9 cabin as I did on my last UC flight. The experience in the air and on the ground was excellent, miles better than CW but not quite as good as First. Anyway, I was going to sack off trying to play the game with VA but this experience makes me think it’s worth it – especially once they’ve phased out all the 787-9s (not spending a penny of my own cash on UC leisure flights if boarding one of those remains a possibility)

    • tomtom135 says:

VA = VS before anyone says anything, I forget how pedantic people can be in this community 😀

    • Rob says:

At least a decade until that happens – and 3 years until 7 go. Will still leave 10.

      • tomtom135 says:

I’m guessing it’s far too complicated to try and phase them out entirely from certain routes thus offering a guarantee to people who are buying cash UC tickets they won’t get the cabin. I’m also guessing it wasn’t worth retrofitting the cabins. To be fair I don’t really know if they’ve tried to do anything but they must know it’s an issue – two of the crew yesterday told me customers regularly complain about the UC cabin in the 787-9.

    • HampshireHog says:

The PE cabin on a 787 is tbh better in my view

  • Cathy says:

Well that’s pretty much sealed the deal. Stop collecting Virgin and switch to Avios

  • paul says:

The new website is amazing BUT he’s going to need huge server power going forward.

    He did hint at advertising.

It would make sense for HfP to collaborate on this (perhaps invest as a partner) as it would be a win-win for both, especially as the developer is still looking to expand the functionality.

  • polo says:

What does this really mean for the virgin credit cards?

    • Rob says:

Depends what you’re looking for. 6k economy redemptions to the US (plus £270 of tax) may bring in people at the bottom end.

      • Lumma says:

The problem with that however, is that they need to convince people that it’s worth collecting the points to still spend £550 cash per couple on fees when the headline cash price isn’t much more.

Long haul RFS starts at 50k avios + £100, which i think is a much easier sell than “you might be able to fly for 12k virgin points plus £270 but you might need a lot more”

        • BlairWaldorfSalads says:

Yes entirely agree. I think the card is dead in the water other than for those who have found a specific niche for it (will say no more). But the new owner of Virgin Money is unlikely to care.

  • Bumblebee says:

Good site ,saw Upper to Mumbai 23 K one way.

  • Eddie says:

Booked UC from LHR to JFK on A350 for August for 35k miles one-way. Was able to use Virgin Atlantic credit card 2 for 1 voucher for my partner. Taxes and fees totalled £998 for two (£499 each). Curiously, the earlier flight, they wanted 770,000 miles per person!

  • PH says:

If the J product was consistently superior to BA, I’d rationalise this as pay more for better. (Also, they have much less J capacity than BA).

But I’m not convinced that it is, especially with the old hard product still in the mix
    for years to come.

Maybe worth paying 5-10% more than BA (whether cash or points) but not some of the differences seen here
