10am: Book IHG’s Kimpton Fitzroy London for 38p (or possibly £50)

IHG’s Kimpton Fitzroy London, the impressive Victorian pile in Russell Square, is 125 years old.

To celebrate, it is selling 125 rooms at the original 1900 price of seven shillings and sixpence, which is 38p.

The rooms are available from 10am.

Book IHG's Kimpton Fitzroy London for 38p

The hotel has been vague about how it works and what it will cost.

Reading between the lines of the small print, and looking at how the hotel currently sells gift vouchers, I suspect that it may be selling 125 gift vouchers, for any date, for 38p.

These will be sold from www.kimptonfitzroylondon.com and NOT from ihg.com.

Once you have secured a voucher, I think you will need to email the hotel and make a booking for a date of your choice. Vouchers will be valid for 12 months.

I am not 100% sure that the price will be 38p

It’s confusing. The PR company behind this says:

“125 rooms will be available to book at the original 1900 price of seven shillings and sixpence (approximately £50 today)”

Now, seven shillings and sixpence – as a direct conversion – is 38p. Is this what the hotel is going to charge? If so, why mention the £50 figure? And why not mention 38p?

What is a FACT is that, at 10am today, 125 rooms will be sold at www.kimptonfitzroylondon.com for a date in the next 12 months.

We are not sure if the price will be 38p or £50, and we aren’t exactly sure how the booking process works. I suspect you receive a gift voucher and can pick a date later.

Irrespective of whether you pay 38p or £50, you are getting a bargain given the price of 5-star London hotels. Rooms at the Fitzroy usually start at £300.

Note that your voucher books into the base room category and does not include breakfast. It isn’t clear if IHG One Rewards benefits will apply. I should warn you that the base rooms at Kimpton Fitzroy are VERY small (from just 15 square metres) although the hotel itself is lovely.

We will try to get one to do a review – let’s see!

PS. I know that we are not giving you much notice of this deal. This was deliberate. It has not been widely publicised and if we had written about it last week it would have been picked up by every travel and deals site and your chance of getting one would be very low.

Just checked into this again after this morning and frankly gob smacked at the stunning incompetence of these jokers, amazing. Is there an advertising/pr equivalent of the Razzies? They’d walk it.

    • David says:

I’m gob smacked that you’re still bothered. I was also gobsmacked that a few days ago, seemingly without irony, you referred to “the poor” re standard BA check in users, it seems we have very different values.

  • John says:

There is a strong argument to report this to the ASA just for the utter incompetence in the running, wasting peoples time etc
After it went wrong they raced into a clearly unplanned ill-thought through replacement process.

    • Alison says:

As I mentioned earlier, I think Kimpton has breached ASA codes on competitions and sales promotions. It did not set out Ts and Cs, the switch from website to social media to email to lottery … no transparency on blackouts (‘submit 3 dates and we’ll let you know’) no statement as to what happens in the event all 3 dates not available, etc etc. Totally unprofessional and probably illegal.

      • David says:

Get over it and move on.

Its not about that, its about the principle.
Even if administered well,. the chances of getting a cheap room close to zero.
But there are rules about this kind of thing, partly to avoid messing consumers about and wasting their time.
Those involved in this kind of stuff should know better.

  • Daniel says:

The amount of headloss and entitlement in this comment section is actually staggering. Nobody owes anyone a cheap hotel room. You missed out, forget about it and hunt for another deal. Crying endlessly about the unfairness is almost comical

  • Alternative lifestyle says:

Disappointed there is no take up on my offer on page 18. I was really hoping to meet fellow FFers/HFPees for more hilarious tales of travel woes.

And seeing as I couldn’t get a party ticket. I won’t be able to socialise there either

It’s a bit embarrassing to read all these comments .

I had emailed the hotel at 12 yesterday and asked politely if there were any rooms on the £50 deal. They replied and said I missed out. (I totally missed the insta story as I don’t follow them). So I politely replied and said I was sorry to miss out – and often walked past their hotel and the pink lambergini .They then replied and offered me the £50 rate on my date of choosing.

    It’s nice to be nice

I’m diamond elite ambassador – not sure if that helped .

For those that are still moaning – grow up and move on

  • Solartravels says:

I just got this after sending the email yesterday, so at least they are being proactive:

…Sadly, you’re not one of the first 200 guests to secure a stay as part of our birthday celebration. We’re sorry you missed out on this occasion.

However, as a thank you for entering, we’d love to offer you 20% off your stay in June 2025, including breakfast…

  • broomy23 says:

I booked my first choice of date, £50 is required within 24 hours of the email being received. The stay has shown up on my IHG account and I have duly paid. Great bit of luck being able to send the email within 4 minutes of the Instagram post though

  • Jack says:

Did they send you a follow up email today after the initial email confirming yesterday?

    • broomy23 says:

I received a confirmation email from IHG and a payment link from the hotel.
