What happened at the Head for Points Summer Party 2025?

Thank you to everyone who came to our summer party last Thursday evening.

Everyone had a lot of fun, despite the weather. We definitely set a new heat record for the event with the Met Office saying it was the hottest day of the year. Luckily a big stone church is exactly where you want to be on such a day, although it did warm up eventually!

This year the party was sponsored by Heathrow Express, who showcased their new Premier+ offering ahead of its official launch.

This will replace Business First, the current offering, and bundles fast track security at Heathrow as well as lounge access at both Paddington and Heathrow in your ticket. Premier+ will be available later this summer and you can expect a full article on it when it launches.

Heathrow Express’s sponsorship meant we could give you all two drinks vouchers instead of one! Everyone must have been thirsty because the upstairs bars were depleted by around 9pm.

The drinks system this year was much faster than previously and it only took a few minutes to be served at peak times, with a range of beer, wine, alcohol-free beer and soft drinks available.

The whole HfP team was there, and we even managed to get the five of us together for a group photo at the end. From left to right: Rhys, Katie, Sinead, Conny and Rob.

A big shout-out to everyone who helped, including Yuhao, Maxime, Matt, James, Max and Ashley who welcomed everyone on the door and ensured a smooth arrivals process. The catering staff also did a fabulous job of serving everyone speedily.

We had around 150 travel trade guests this year. By all accounts they enjoyed being grilled on travel and loyalty by you all!

We had representatives from American Airlines, Aspire, Bluechain, Cathay Pacific, Celebrity Cruises, China Airlines, Club Avolta, Club Med, Currensea, Dragonpass, easyJet, Ennismore / Disloyalty, Flying Blue, Heathrow Rewards, Heathrow Express, Hilton, Korean Air, Lloyds Bank, London City Airport, Malaysia Airlines, Marriott, Miles & More, No1 Lounges, Norse Atlantic, Park Hyatt London, Plaza Premium, Preferred Hotels, Priority Pass, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Trip.com, Turkish Airlines, Uber, United, Virgin Group, Virgin Red, Virgin Voyages and Virgin Wines so there were plenty of people to chat with.

Media guests included Cathy Adams from The Times, Simon Calder from The Independent and Claer Barrett from the Financial Times.

Claer wrote about the party in FT Weekend – see p12 of the main section from Saturday if you have a copy.

Barry Collins, our SAS Miles Millionaire, was also there:

Our new venue, Christ Church Spitalfields, was just the right size. The nave was comfortably full, with overflow space (and a cash bar for additional drinks) downstairs in the crypt.

There was also an outdoor terrace for any sun-seekers out there:

Our famous raffle!

We had around 550 people there but it never felt too crowded until we make everyone come back inside for the raffle at 8pm! This photo shows the scale of the event before we corralled everyone inside:

I had the pleasure of MCing for the night. Rob gave a short speech, as did Aoife from Heathrow Express and Tim from Malaysia Airlines.

Malaysia Airlines provided the star raffle prize of two business class tickets to Australia via Kuala Lumpur. We had 15 other prizes too – a full list is below and we are very grateful to all the companies who helped out.

This year we changed the format of the raffle. Instead of announcing the top prize first we wanted to keep the tension high. We drew the winner but immediately put their ticket in a gold envelope to be unsealed after all other prizes had been won!

Julian – who came up from Canterbury especially – was our big winner and was understandably thrilled! Here he is with Tim and Helen from Malaysia Airlines and Rob:

He told us: “I’m planning to go to Sydney, where I lived before moving to the UK. Thinking of heading out in November to see family and friends.”

Richard and Paul Carter, who you may recognise from the BBC, both won four Plaza Premium lounge passes each:

Other prizes included:

  • Hyatt: 20,000 World of Hyatt points
  • Flying Blue: One year of Platinum status
  • Accor: Two tickets to the ALL Terrace at OVO Arena Wembley for Busted vs McFly with an overnight stay at ibis London Wembley
  • KM Malta Airlines: Two return business class tickets to Malta
  • Virgin Wines: A 12 bottle case of wine
  • Heathrow Rewards: 5,000 Heathrow Rewards points (two winners)
  • Avis: A seven day car rental from any Avis location in the world
  • Billesley Manor: A one-night stay at Billesley Manor Hotel & Spa in Stratford-upon-Avon, newly part of Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio
  • Qatar Airways: Two tickets to see Alanis Morrissette from The NinetyThird lounge at The O2, including £100 per person to spend on food and drink
  • Qatar Airways: Two tickets to see Peter Kay from The NinetyThird lounge at The O2, including £100 per person to spend on food and drink
  • LeShuttle: A standard return on LeShuttle car train via the Channel Tunnel
  • Plaza Premium: Four Plaza Premium lounge passes for use at Heathrow T2, T4 and T5, Gatwick North Terminal or Edinburgh (two winners)
  • American Express: Two Summer Garden tickets to Noah Kahan at American Express presents BST Hyde Park

After the raffle the staff brought out over 500 Heathrow Express-branded cupcakes – they were so popular that by the time I got round to having some they were all gone!

Things quietened down towards the end of the night, although there were still 100+ people there after our official closing time of 9pm. It was during this time that I managed to talk to a number of HfP comment section regulars including Cat and Polly, pictured here with Conny:

As always, a massive thank you to everyone who came along. None of this would be possible if it weren’t for you.

Thanks also to Heathrow Express, whose sponsorship meant we could have a party of this scale in the first place, and all our raffle prize suppliers, particularly Malaysia Airlines who went above and beyond.

See you next year – if we can find a date which doesn’t clash with the World Cup! If not it’s 2027 ….

  • Matt B says:

I have to say I was quite disappointed.

The venue, personally felt cramped. I couldn’t find many of the airline reps and the drinks were gone just before the raffle.

    • George says:

Surely, there must be some positive things to say too?
We got drinks from the bar on the left a few minutes before the raffle (the one on the right did close well before 8).

      • polly says:

Cat and I got drinks after the raffle, so maybe you didn’t look hard enough… positive!

    • Rob H not Rob says:

One less ticket being snapped up for next year I guess.

      • Alex Sm says:

I’m happy to get it as I missed out this year’s gig due to a trip to 🇸🇪 though normally my partner and I are regulars there!

    • Froggee says:

Sorry – I monopolised the airline reps all night as I was giving them detailed instructions on how to tender for the next Froggee family holiday. Mr McToadrick helped himself to all the drinks vouchers when no one was looking and, much like The Tiger Who Came to Tea, drank all the drink. I think he might have eaten all the cupcakes too. Us Scottish people really like free stuff. Loving these Heathrow Express mints by the way.

My main area of disappointment was the raffle where Rhys and his co-conspirators repeatedly drew numbers that were not mine. I was okay with this at first given that I knew he would have put yellow 415 in the envelope at the beginning. But when the business class flights were awarded to some random HfP reader and not me, I knew something was rotten in the London borough of Tower Hamlets. The fact that the so called “winner” chose to taunt me by wearing a green shirt made this even worse.

      Seriously sad face.

If you are going to do such an event again, I really do not think it is reasonable to expect people to come just for drinks, cupcakes, convivial conversation, and a mere chance of winning something. We want value for money from our £15. At the very least I would have expected a pair of premium economy flights to the East Coast of the US for all attendees whereas all I had to show for the effort was a croaky voice the next day.

      Grumble, grumble, grrrrrrrr.

      • Skywalker says:

“My main area of disappointment was the raffle where Rhys and his co-conspirators repeatedly drew numbers that were not mine”

        Froggee 😀

      • polly says:

But you had a great time, really!🤣

    • Rob says:

Bar downstairs remained open throughout. We slightly underestimated how many would show up- probably because we sold tickets far nearer the day than usual – and the drink was not ‘sale or return’ so we had to be cautious. All the discussion pre-party was actually about what the heck we’d do if we had a pile of undrunk stuff.

It’s also possible they were overpouring the wine. Beers are easy – people get a bottle, you order a fixed number of bottles. If the staff were pouring bigger measures of wine than agreed then the number of bottles we ordered would have run short.

Catering bill was £14,500 plus VAT – we didn’t skimp. Plus £730 of cupcakes!

      • Barrel for Scraping says:

An overspill party for those who couldn’t make the first 😁

      • Jimmy says:

The wine was definitely not overpoured, some of the smallest measures I’ve ever had at an event 😂

      • The Savage Squirrel says:

“All the discussion pre-party was actually about what the heck we’d do if we had a pile of undrunk stuff.”

Strategic Error! Solution: buy some of something you like and save it to hand out last. Then in an underusage scenario you have a tax deductible stash of your favourite tipple to work through 😀

      • Alex Sm says:

You can always add those bottles of wine and liquor as additional consolation prizes for those who did not win anything in the main draw! 🍾

    • david says:

Half empty kind of guy?! Im disappointed that I paid hfp for the winning ticket but it never got drawn.

    • Skywalker says:

“The venue, personally felt cramped. I couldn’t find many of the airline reps and the drinks were gone just before the raffle”

It’s training for a day at the airport – get used to it! 😀

“The lounge, personally felt cramped. I couldn’t find many of the airline reps and the drinks were gone just before take-off”

  • Inman says:

Last time I took Business First on HEx, none of the staff (including the manager) at LHR T3 security lanes knew that fast track was included in the business first ticket. I hope they will get their act together with the new launch.

    • Will says:

The HEX staff training time is taken up with drilling that you have to harass people as they come through passport control before they have a chance to see there’s other routes on public transport into London.

  • Tony says:

No representatives from BA? Were they invited 😊?

    • PGR says:

Very notable by their absence. Presumably all “washing their hair” that night!

      • LittleNick says:

Yes thought someone from IAG Loyalty was supposed to be present

        • Rob says:

They were. Didn’t show but I had an apology on Friday.

          • david says:

Wasnt Hyatt supposed to have gone? or only provided a prize. I would love to know why its impossible to get their points over here unless its buying them (BIG 🙁 )

          • Rob says:

There were two from Park Hyatt London but there are no group staff in London – they are all in Switzerland.

          • Tocsin says:

I hope your reply to them was ‘cluck, cluck, cluck’ !

          • JDB says:

@david – the relative difficulty of acquiring Hyatt points here is part of what makes them so attractive. If they get too easy to earn, the benefits will inevitably decline.

  • Judith says:

Hi we were unable to attend due to being on holiday however I was wondering if any aggrieved Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members like us, who have found the value of our flying club points massively depleted, were able to discuss this change with the representatives who were there on the night? Having been loyal Virgin passengers for many years we have greatly benefitted with upper class redemptions which we have always appreciated. We have always praised the planes, the crews, the Clubhouse and just about everything Virgin. We have not made a single booking since the change, looking at paying often three times more than pre change. And as HFP have pointed out if you’re able to get a remotely decent outward fare you def won’t coming back. And we are flexible and not tied to school holidays. Sorry rant over but aside from being angry I guess I’m just really sad! Thanks

    • Rob H not Rob says:

Same story here, we were on holiday last week, but same Virgin sentiments re Virgin. I don’t think they are bothered tbh.

    • Can says:

I’m severely tied to school holidays. After the changes, I converted all my virgin pot to Hilton. Not a great value, but if I cannot use the virgin voucher, I’m not booking it.

      • Mark says:

Exactly the same here, and booked 5 nights in the Conrad LA for a few weeks time.

    • paul says:

Virgin Atlantic chose not to attend – strange given that just about every other Virgin brand did – but not too surprising given the expected “feedback”. Same with BA

      • Rob says:

Do also factor in that Crawley to Spitalfields and Waterside to Spitalfields are both a bit of a trot.

There were at least 4 Amex marketing people there, but from Rakuten who do it all under contract to Amex.

  • Genghis says:

Looked like a great event. Well done HfP. Sorry I couldn’t make it. Was travelling. Good to see Polly was there!

    • Cat says:

Genghis! Polly and I were saying how much you’ve been missed in the comments and forums, of late! How are you? How’s family life? Where have your travels taken you?

It was a good event, we had a lot of fun. I hope you can make the next one!

      • The Original Nick. says:

From what I remember I’m quite sure that Genghis said that he wouldn’t be commenting so much when Rob decided to change the website to a more Forums platform.

        • BJ says:

It’s true he didn’t like the forum format so much but I think it was more a case of diverting the time to his young family.

      • BJ says:

I get the feeling that Genghis, like many oldies is now lurking but only rarely commenting 🙂 You and Polly are looking well, glad to hear it was a good night.

        • sayling says:

          Whatever happened to Shoestring?

The public has a right to know!

          • Rob says:

Banned for continual homophobic and racist attacks on HfP staff and other commentators.

          • r* says:

Was shoestring the one who said covid was a pussycat virus just before everything shut down? 😀

          • Cat says:

Oh good grief! I caught some of the appalling things Harry would say after a few too many drinks, but from the sounds of it, I only saw a tiny fraction of them. Awful.

@r* – yes, that was him. He also flew off to his second home somewhere in Europe when lockdown was announced, if memory serves.

        • Cat says:

It was a great night @BJ, marred only by the fact that you, @Genghis and @Lady-London couldn’t make it! Polly and I request your presence at the next one!

Also – I’m finally planning to hike the West Highland Way next May half term (and am giving the Caledonian Sleeper another chance, now that it’s got a double bed, and is no longer a Serco omnishambles), camping all the way, hopefully. V excited, as had planned to hike it in 2020…

          • BJ says:

@Cat, this was the first time I’ve actually been at home in the UK at the time of an HFP party.. i still didn’t try my luck with tickets though as it was clear loads of people really wanted them and it’s sort of difficult to justify coming down from Edinburgh without making more out of the trip. Good choice for May as you can often get really lucky with the weather in the West that month. and will be a bit quieter than summer. I hope to your schedule might allow you to include Buachaille or Ben Lui. Enjoy!

          • Cat says:

I’ve got fingers crossed – it could be amazing weather, or it could p!ss it down, while we’re plagued by midges!

If we still have any energy when we get that far North, I would quite like to see Buachaille! Thanks!

        • Alex Sm says:

Yes, same here – I was an avid commentator for years but now a bit lost in the myriad of formats and less relevant topics. But the annual party is the annual party, so here we are 🕺🏼

          • BJ says:

The forums have done much better than expected given the extremely liggt touch to moderation. The most frustrating bit is just that people often give threads poor uninformative titles, and often create same old questions without first checking if they’ve already been answered. Page views clearly show that HFP is working for more people than ever before but for oldies I think an element of fatigue sets in until something massive like global RFS for example comes along to stir the pot.

          • Rob says:

There is a cycle – you find HfP when you don’t know much, you learn and you want ever more advanced stuff, but at the same time there are more new readers coming in every day behind you who want more introductory stuff. The latter is also more profitable for us as a business.

      • Genghis says:

Hey Cat. Yes, all good. Keeping busy with my two boys. Travel has certainly changed since our kidless days. We’re off to Crete this summer for a relaxing time by the pool and beach.

Hope you’re also keeping well? I do hope your boyfriend has proposed in the last few years!

I hope to make the next HfP party!

        • Rob says:

You’re always welcome as you know, just give me a shout.

        • Cat says:

Crete will be glorious! When the kids get bigger, travel can become more adventurous again – I know friends swear by Thailand and Costa Rica as brilliant destinations for families when the kids are a bit older.

No, still no sign of a proposal after 16 years…

Hopefully see you at the next one!

        • polly says:

Hi Genghis, great to have you comment again. Hope we get to see you at the next one. As Cat says, you and Lady London ( who actually missed the party announcement, she couldn’t believe it! ) were missed. But you are loving family life it seems, and Crete is a great destination with kids.. it was a great event, and looking forward hopefully! To a 2026 0ne! Cat is very patient waiting for that proposal!

    • Worzel says:

Would have been fun to have been there Cat and Polly to have a chat.
Genghis! Hopefully your Dad is still receiving his monthly copy of Gardeners World……

  • Tokugawa says:

The event looks great, and I’ll definitely do my best to attend in future years. The only disappointment for me is that Avios and BA are conspicuously absent from the list of industry representatives. Given that this is THE main website for Avios information, it’s pretty contemptuous for them not to send anyone, and tells you a ton about their expectations of current customer sentiment…

    • Skywalker says:

“it’s pretty contemptuous for them not to send anyone”

I think BA reps really do not want the hassle of questions that they can’t really answer (as decisions were made most likely above their pay grades) and any response BA reps would have given, really would not have changed anything.

What’s there to say to them? What’s there to ask?

BA has done what it has done

      ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

  • HampshireHog says:

How curious that there was no representation from Avios, British Airways or American Express?

    • Berks Flyer says:

Was thinking the same thing as I read the story.

      • Rob says:

Amex’s summer staff event was the same night. The IAG press team had said they would come but didn’t. I don’t think anyone from BA was brave enough.

    • Barrel for Scraping says:

Avios Group ltd were meant to be there, I wonder if they was an accidentali omission or they really didn’t bother to show up. In an earlier comments section Rob said this event clashed with another Amex were attending.

      • Rob says:

A very senior person there said people would show and we had RSVPs. I did get an apology the next day for the no-shows.

    • JDB says:

Would you attend if you were them?! There seem to be quite a lot of un housetrained posters including those who complain rude questions weren’t asked when interviews are published.

  • Sue says:

So BA snubbed you……..wonder why? 😂
