News in brief:

Qatar Airways completes Starlink roll-out on 777 fleet

Whilst we wait for Virgin Atlantic to start its rollout of Starlink high speed wi-fi in late 2026, Qatar Airways has announced that its entire Boeing 777 fleet of 54 aircraft is now equipped.

This is an important moment, because up to this week you could not be 100% sure that a Boeing 777 aircraft you were booked on would have it. You can now book with confidence, subject to any equipment swaps.

We say in our articles that 200 mbps is possible, because this is what we had when we flew down to Doha recently, but Qatar Airways claims that 500 mbps can be achieved.

(Whilst Virgin Atlantic is starting its rollout next year, it will be 2028 before you can be 100% certain that your aircraft will have it. It’s worth noting that Qatar Airways claims that, by the end of the process, it had cut the installation time down to under 10 hours.)

Qatar Airways is now moving on to its A350 fleet. When Rhys and I were in Doha in May we saw the first A350 being equipped, although this was going to be a test installation used to get Starlink certified.

Qatar Airways says its 58 A350s will get it over the course of “the next year.” You can read about our experience with the service on Qatar’s 777 earlier this year here.

Earn double Avios with Club Avolta

Club Avolta is the loyalty programme for the Avolta duty free empire.

We explained how Club Avolta works in this article.

One key point is that you earn Avios when making purchases at Club Avolta-run outlets, including World Duty Free, at London Heathrow and key airports in Spain.

Until 31st August, the Avios rate is doubled to 2 Avios per £1 or €1 spent when you spend at least £50 or €50.

The introductory offer of 250 Avios for your first purchase in Heathrow or Spain is also still running and will double up with this promotion.

To earn Avios you need to add your British Airways Club or Iberia Club number in the Club Avolta app. You’ll find this under ‘Account’ and then ‘Explore partners’. Further details are in this HfP article on Club Avolta.

No registration is required for the double Avios offer.

I’ve just flown a 777 from Manila to Doha and starlink was awesome. I achieved just under 200mb but it was rapid throughout…..and kept me up to date with the cricket.

I’m still torn on whether it’s a good thing as I enjoy not being contactable whilst flying. We’re about to board a 787 to London so will happily go back to a book and a movie for the next 7 hours.

I flew on a 777-300ER on Wednesday and there definitely was no starlink. Just standard internet and it cost $10 for the full flight. I was on a first class redemption (which was great!) and still wasn’t free. Why would it have been missing from this flight?

    • Adder says:

I think the leased 777s (ex-VA and ex-CX) don’t have starlink, and as far as I know there are no plans to fit it to them. You’d probably have been on the latter as I’m pretty sure they’re the only 777s Qatar have with an F cabin.

Sounds like an ex Cathay plane

Am sure it was free when I came back from BKK in F last year on a QR A380…

I will use the mention of Iberia as a loose segway. Has anyone had any success adding Iberia as an Amex points transfer partner? Due to my outrageous (standard?) 9 digit Iberia FF number, AMEX won’t accept it. And chat help has not been successful

    • Nico says:

Can you do Ba and then transfer to Iberia?

    • Wally1976 says:

I’ve no idea but going to suggest trying the last 8 digits as cutting digits off the front works with some other transfers.

    • Lumma says:

My Iberia account number is IB and 8 numbers

    • The Original Nick. says:

Newer IB FF numbers consist of 9 digits which has been a problem for a long time now when trying to add it to Amex MR. I think it’s pretty much impossible to add it. Only the older 8 digit numbers work. Mine has been added for over 10 years.

The trouble is that the spending avios doesn’t seem to work. I converted avios into two £50 vouchers. Tried to use them at World Duty Free in Heathrow terminal 3 and was told that I couldn’t. The vouchers wouldn’t scan at the till and I was told by a manager that the only way they will work is if you request paper copies which take two weeks to arrive. I complained to Club Avolta who just refunded the avios. No explanation of why the vouchers didn’t work and if they ever will fix the problem.

Having recently flown Qatar on a 777 with starling the speed is brilliant

The service is still very good too. Al Safwa is still a great lounge too it was night and day vs the hustle and bustle in the business lounge.

The London lounge was great too
