As we’ve covered on HfP in the past, Lufthansa has spent many years trying to claim that its miles have no value.

This isn’t because they are hard to redeem (although premium availability is very tight post covid) but because it has been hit by various legal claims under German law.

Lufthansa had a problem. It could hardly claim that its miles had no fixed value if it was selling them at a fixed price, so it pulled the sale of miles.

It actually went further. It stopped the transfer of points from other schemes into Miles & More if those points could be purchased.

For example, because Marriott sells Bonvoy points to the public, you can no longer transfer Bonvoy points into Miles & More. This is because – de facto – you could claim it puts a fixed value on the Lufthansa miles.

The revenue stream from selling miles is hard to resist, however. I’ve heard points.com employees (the company which runs most mileage purchase schemes) speak at conferences and the sums they quote for the total volume of miles sold are mind boggling.

Lufthansa has found a way around the rules

What Lufthansa has started doing is selling ‘bundles’. You are buying a pile of miles, but you’re getting some extra ‘benefits’ thrown in.

The fact that these extra ‘benefits’ are worthless is besides the point.

The price paid for the miles is in theory obscured and so it sees the legal threat as reduced.

Here are the extra ‘benefits’ that come if you buy Miles & More miles:

  • bonus miles when you next book a hotel or car via the Lufthansa website
  • bonus miles on your next five Avis rentals credited to Miles & More
  • with some bundles, mid level Avis status
  • a discount on a Priority Pass membership (identical or worse than the discount code you can buy from Groupon for £7)

Yes, it’s exciting stuff!

Get a bonus of 50% when you buy a bundle

Lufthansa is currently offering bonus miles when you buy a bundle.

It isn’t clear who is targeted or how long the deal will last. The small print says:

This promotional offer is for selected Miles & More members and is valid for their first bundle purchase only. This offer may be modified or terminated at any time without notice.

As you can see from the website here, you receive:

  • 4,500 Miles & More miles with the £80 ‘Extra Small Bundle’ (1.8p per mile)
  • 15,000 Miles & More miles with the £220 ‘Small Bundle’ (1.5p per mile)
  • 75,000 Miles & More miles with the £870 ‘Medium Bundle’ (1.1p per mile)
  • 150,000 Miles & More miles with the £1,530 ‘Large Bundle’ (1.0p per mile) – this bonus is only available to Miles & More status members

You can buy up to 250,000 miles, pre any bonuses, in 2025.

Is it worth buying Miles & More miles at this price?

If you have no existing Miles & More balance then I don’t recommend it. This is because:

  • short haul redemptions have historically been bad value, albeit they appear better under the new dynamic redemption pricing
  • Lufthansa First Class redemptions (far easier to get via Miles & More than via partners) are still fairly scarce, albeit they are there if you book in advance
  • Business Class availability across Lufthansa and SWISS is far lower than it was pre-covid, when I could be pretty sure of getting four seats whenever I wanted
  • taxes and charges are high
  • miles expire after three years and you can’t do anything to save them, unless you earn Miles & More elite status

There are upsides, with several sweet spots including flights to the Middle East (75,000 miles return on partners in business class from the UK). If you do have a balance in the programme and want to top it up before a big redemption, this new ‘bundle’ promotion is a good chance to do so.

      Looking at Seatspy, reward availability looks hopeless compared to BA.

        I’m not sure seatspy is best here. I’m pretty sure the Lufthansa Group use married segments, so if you’re traveling onwards to the UK you’re just better off searching on the M&M portal.

        I found one-way business fares 35k points and £200 DXB-MAN, 75k and £200 HKG-MAN, and 100K and £300 SIN-MAN. And plenty of Economy from Singapore for 5k(!) and £200.

      I was very much a doom monger when they said they were going to dynamic pricing, however I’m actually pleasantly surprised. As a SEN, there is a *lot* of availability.

      The downside is that the cheap prices, and there actually are cheap prices, are totally non-flex, non-ref. So you have to be very sure of your plans. YQ is still stupidly high, so often times cash bookings are better value. But there is still some value in the scheme.

        Dynamic pricing for award seats doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. If BA kept their current award availability (perhaps with simplified pricing so 1 or 2 options instead of 5 or 6) but opened up all seats to book with Avios but priced the non-award inventory dynamically then I think that would be a genuine enhancement.

      Feedback was ok. I think one reason is that Lufthansa charges UK customers less for cash (eg LhR FRA NYC is cheaper than FRA NYC) so redemptions are lower too.

      However it is now very easy for them to make it far poorer value without officially announcing anything.

    What’s the current situation around Lufthansa status matches? I held off the BA one earlier this year because I already had ITA exec status (matched from BA) but as ITA have extended my status for little effort since the status match I’ve never dropped a level and so don’t know if they do soft landing.

    Lufthansa seems to be deliberately keeping ITA Volare alive this year rather than merging into Miles and More quickly presumably so those on freebie status matches don’t get free status in M&M.

    In the short term Volare status is recognised on some Lufthansa Group airlines but not the wider Star Alliance so maybe I should give them a go using this status this year and then decide whether or not to do a BA status match with M&M if one is available at the beginning of next year

    Data point – booked a LHR > MUC > DEN, then DEN > FRA > LHR as a return in May/June 2026 (when no bonus miles sale was on, 😭), total price was 71676 miles in Business with £1299.82 in taxes.

    At the moment, one way business fare is 37782 miles. One way economy fare is 43431 miles.

    I got the Miles&More miles off of a booking.com deal last year, and I wanted to use up the points. It’ll be a one off, as the taxes are charges are way higher than the LHR DEN route I would have gotten through BA. Their reward fares are also in different buckets – the cheapest redemption fare that I bought was no cancellations and £217 change fee. Realise I’ve been spoilt for £35 avios cancellation fees…!!

    I am an M&M elite member and I am happy with the changes. Finally I feel that I am able to use my M&M miles on some useful redemptions. Last time I bought a Bundle there was a 60% bonus and I purchased the version in Swiss francs. I used it on a 1st class ticket, so I definitely got value out of it. However, reading your article it seems that I would be ineligible for a further purchase with a bonus.
