WOW: Spend Christmas in Cape Town with a new ‘Avios only’ BA flight

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Well, this is quite impressive.

British Airways has launched a new ‘Avios only’ flight. This is a flight where EVERY seat in EVERY cabin is bookable for Avios.

Frankly, it’s a cracker and I’m genuinely impressed Avios could pull this off. You could be spending Christmas and New Year in Cape Town.

Avios only flight to Cape Town

These seats are bookable now and will not last long, at least in premium cabins.

You can use British Airways American Express 2-4-1 Companion Vouchers and Barclays Upgrade Vouchers.

Here are the timings:

Outbound:

  • Saturday 20th December 2025
  • Departs Heathrow 18.25, arrives Cape Town 08.05 + 1

Inbound:

  • Friday 2nd January 2026
  • Departs Cape Town 20.55, arrives Heathrow 07.00 + 1

It is a four class service so First Class is bookable. It is a Boeing 777 so you will get Club Suite in business class.

The cost, per person, is (using the ‘most Avios, least cash’ option):

  • World Traveller: 70,000 Avios + £150 return
  • World Traveller Plus: 135,000 Avios + £355 return
  • Club World: 200,000 Avios + £475 return
  • First Class: 200,000 Avios + £900 return

First Class does not use Reward Flight Saver pricing, hence the odd comparison to Club World. Remmeber that you cannot mix Club and First on the same booking without paying excessive amounts of taxes and charges.

Get booking!

If you miss out, keep an eye on ba.com as a lot of people will book immediately and then ask their partner tonight!

If their partner isn’t keen, or they suddenly realise how expensive hotels are in Cape Town at this time of the year, the seats will be cancelled under the 24 hour cooling off period. Set up a SeatSpy seat alert if you have a subscription.

Got there in time, but can’t do those days of the week!
A shame but will have to slum it in the economy flights I already have for the day after.

The Hyatt Regency CP is available for 6500 points a night over the period, about £100. I’m sure I could gift a few Club Access Awards as it’s Christmas. (But be aware the CAA only works for up to a 7 night stay and there seems to be some odd minimum stay rules at play.)

    • SteveJ says:

That’s an amazing deal given that hotel is £400+ usually.

      • Rob says:

Remember that Hyatt GUARANTEES reward rooms – at a fixed price based on its chart – as long as standard cash rooms are available. It’s why Hyatt is by far the most valuable hotel programme.

    • Niall says:

That Hyatt is one of the weirdest I’ve been to. They don’t actually have a club lounge, but have a happy hour with really really poor food. The prices also vary massively not just with dates but also as you get nearer the time. The hotel likes to fill rooms quite effectively with tour groups. It is fine for 6500 points but you would be completely mad to spend £400+ a night there and I don’t this is a price they usually achieve. Do check FlyerTalk for reviews.

Oh and if you do pay cash, Hyatt have a guaranteed lowest rate thing although I’ve heard it’s potentially the worst even compared to the other big chains.

I’d be most grateful for a CAA for my December stay. If you’ve still got them, let me know 🙂

    • Ben says:

Hi. We managed to book flights yesterday and have looked at the Hyatt. Would be very appreciative if there was any CAA available. Thanks

  • VinZ says:

Done it two years ago. Loved it and totally worth it. And CT will never break the bank like Barbados, even around Xmas/NYE.

  • Alan says:

Interesting idea but sadly forcing you to have to spend both Christmas and New Year there rather than either one means it’s a total non-starter for those of us who have to work at least one of them every year (we split the 2 week period between everyone on the rota).

  • Richard says:

Very nice..Wonder if avios will be able to convince BA into a ‘Christmas special’ going forwards..

  • Ramsey says:

It’s worth signing up to the Avios app push notifications. Those of us that did got a notification yesterday about this flight and it was bootable 24 hours earlier…..
