News in brief:

Qatar Airways increases flights from London, Manchester and Dublin

When it comes to flights to the UK, and particularly London, Qatar Airways appears to be insatiable. Last year, it launched its eight daily flight to Heathrow. This winter, it says it will have up to 10 flights per day to the airport on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with nine on other days.

This is on top of BA’s own two daily services to Doha as well as 10 weekly flights from Gatwick. Four Gatwick flights have been dropped – it was 14 – which explains some of the additional Heathrow capacity.

Flights from Manchester will also increase from21 to 24 (over 3x daily) whilst Dublin goes from 14 to 17.

Flights do not appear to be loaded yet. It’s likely they will start from the end of October, which is when the winter season begins in the aviation world.

It’s unclear where the Heathrow slots are coming from to allow the increase, although winter is normally less busy than the peak summer months. It may be that Qatar Airways is able to mop up some unused capacity when flights to popular summer holiday destinations ramp down.

Either way, it is good news for anyone looking for excellent value Avios redemptions to Asia and Australia, as the additional flights should open up a few more reward seats.

The timetable, if confirmed, is a wonder to behold. There will be departures from Heathrow at 08.05 (A350), 08.25 (777), 08.35 (A380) and 08.40 (A350), with an extra 08.40 out of Gatwick for good measure. These are all timed to catch the main ‘bank’ of onward departures from Doha. Good luck getting a seat in the Terminal 4 Premium Lounge!

Great news that there are extra flights from LHR but shame they’re so expensive. I don’t have the luxury of being a high Avios earner. I’ve just booked our flights to Australia and we’ll fly from Helsinki as it saves us nearly £3k. I’d rather go from LHR to DOH but it’s unaffordable.

    • Andy in Cheshire says:

Last year our daughter flew to Brisbane on Qatar. The fare was £500 cheaper from Edinburgh than it was from Manchester (only 15 miles away from where she lives).

Passengers on the two connecting flights to Doha then boarded the same onward flight to Brisbane. She saved several hundred by getting a train to Edinburgh and staying overnight at the airport.

Somebody, somewhere, is being ripped off.

      • John says:

Sorry I don’t follow. Your daughter flew from EDI but she knew that other people on her DOH-BNE flight had come from MAN and paid £500 more?

        • Andy in Cheshire says:

          Yes.

She obviously checked the cost of the flight from MAN. Then she checked the cost from EDI. The second leg was on the same aircraft, the only difference was the layover duration on DOH.

      • Charlie says:

Not the person who values their time at more than £500 for the lost time or hassle involved to catch a train from Manchester to Edinburgh. Also, there are more than likely many occasions when it is less expensive to fly from Manchester to Doha than from Edinburgh. If a flight from Manchester the following day was £250 less than the one your daughter took from Edinburgh, then no-one is being ripped off, it is just Darwinism at work 🙂

        • Andy in Cheshire says:

          Excuse me. Darwinism?

My daughter is a student. £500 is a lot of money to her, even if it isn’t to you.

          • Charlie says:

Your concluding initial comment was ‘…[s]omebody, somewhere, is being ripped off’ because your daughter chose to travel to Edinburgh from Manchester for a connection to Doha on a specific day to save £500, and you suggest the price should be similar or equal from Manchester, so she did not have to waste her time spending a night in Edinburgh (which could have been added fun anyway!). I was suggesting this is absolutely not the case, and people are not being ripped off, it is just competition at work, although throwing out Darwinism was possibly a bit harsh, although it was tongue-in-cheek 🙂

        • Paul says:

£500 x 2 is £1000 and for a family of 4 is £2000. I can see a lot of value in switching from one airport to another for that sort of saving.
I may self about to embark on circuitous route to Bali. The saving net of positioning flights to EU in CE and night in a hotel at the EU airport out and back is a staggering £3500! That’s a lot of spa treatments and in fact covers in full the hotel costs.

        • Aston100 says:

“it is just Darwinism at work”
What a pathetic comment to make.

      • NorthernLass says:

I’d go to EDI to save £500, I’d use it for a mini break in Scotland at the start or end and very likely have a better experience than departing MAN! But I am time rich so it does depend on circumstances.

        • Andy in Cheshire says:

She has been a student in Edinburgh, so had no problems getting the train and staying overnight.

I confess to being a bit surprised by the reaction to my post this morning, to be honest. Most people here are trying to get “something for nothing”, by chasing Points or Tiers or what have you. Saving £500 by flying from a different airport seems to be entirely on point (no pun intended)

          • John says:

Ok, nothing wrong with what she did.

You just (to me at least) worded it in an odd way. You have no idea if anyone going to BNE on the same flight had actually come from MAN, and even if they did you have no idea what they paid, but you implied that you did.

She saved £500 and spent a bit on a hotel and train ticket. It’s equally possible that someone else who wanted to fly from Edinburgh to somewhere else on that day saved £500 by taking a train to Manchester

Camper van down the Gold Coast ?

  • Terry Butcher says:

So the real story here is that Gatwick loses out to Heathrow, with Qatar preferring the latter airport

    • Rhys says:

The catchment for Heathrow is just so much better, plus the range of connections available. Gatwick is, largely a point-to-point airport.

      • chris w says:

EK have 3 x A380 flights per day from LGW don’t they? They seem to see plenty of demand!

      • CamFlyer says:

Tell that [LGW is for point to point only] to Emirates! STN as well – Emirates seem to be doing very well running connections from what is otherwise a point to point airport.

        • Rhys says:

…but Emirates aren’t running connections in Gatwick or Stansted, they’re doing that at the other end – in Dubai. Gatwick is not a network airport in the same way that Heathrow is.

          • Ken says:

I doubt most Qatar passengers are connecting in Heathrow either…

          • Rhys says:

I was thinking more broadly about why most airlines prefer Heathrow! Given today’s other article.

      • Tim S says:

Though not many people choose to connect at LHR and at DOH. They will fly direct to DOH (or some alternative connecting point)

  • dshunter says:

Given the trouble that several of us have had redeeming discovery dollars I wouldn’t let the bonus sway you too much!

  • FCP says:

Manchester is already 21 weekly. I believe they are going to 24.
    8.15, 14.55 and 21.40 already all daily.
9.30am will be the extra on Sunday, Wednesday & Friday, effective from August 4th

    • Rhys says:

Duh. Accidentally used the Madrid numbers above, rather than Manchester!

    • NorthernLass says:

That’s good news for redemptions. It’s great that you can do both legs on day time departures, unlike most routes going the other way.

    • JakeWS says:

I think the flights are already loaded too. There were 4 inbounds to Manchester next May when I booked a few months ago.

  • chris w says:

QR scheduling four flights to leave within 35 minutes of each other seems like a disaster for passengers. Their check-in area was already a zoo with just the two departures previously (8.05 and 8.35 I believe). Will they be extending the check-in area to accommodate the extra pax? Are there extra desks nearby that they can/will use?

Similar issues in the lounges – they are not large and will be absolutely rammed.

It will also be chaos with boarding because people will go to the wrong gate because the departure times are so similar.

    • JDB says:

Perhaps QR will move terminals?? A lot of egos to deal with for rejigging this but then Qatar does own a stake in the airport.

      • chris w says:

Where would it move to? T4 is the only terminal with any spare space!

        • JDB says:

Other airlines would have to move into T4 from their existing ones. The present configuration is inefficient because of flight timings and alliances amongst other things but no airline really likes T4. It will have to happen long before T2 expansion/T3 closure which will go ahead with or without a third runway.

    • JD says:

Yep! I recently opted for a NCL – LHR – DOH – BKK flight as it was considerably cheaper than Emirates from NCL. The flight was over an hour late departing LHR due to the apparent chaos at check in at LHR meaning the connection in DOH was missed. Talking to other Qatar airway passengers this was quite a common occurrence when flying from LHR.

    • BBbetter says:

The last point is understated. How many head to the gates by just looking at the destination and not the flight number?
Hope the gate agents are extra careful. If not, there’s going to be a few heated arguments over seats.

    • Tom says:

It will indeed be chaos. I am booked on the 8.05 departure in November next and extremely glad I choose a Wednesday to depart by chance! I imagine those first few weeks will be rough in particular until someone realises how bad it’s going to be.

It won’t just be economy either, the ‘Premium’ check in already takes what feels like an eternity in an afternoon when they have 2-3 departures within a couple of hours, cannot imagine what the queue will be like if they have 4 x 40-50 business class passengers all trying to use that area at once.

  • Paul says:

And a 4th lounge coming to T4 for Qatar. No doubt for the scum silver, gold, sapphire and emeralds in Y.

    • Tim S says:

Not appreciative of you calling me scum. I earnt my status, with my own money! What makes those people travelling on OPM better than me?

      • Paul says:

That was not my intention but it is how QR treat you. and I agree not sure how I am any less worthy that their own emerald status holders getting access to the admitted crummy BA First lounge.
However QR dont allow OW status holders into their First and business lounges which they reserve for people who mainly travel on other people’s dime. Very similar to how BA have now decided to treat all members of the Club. They only want the big spenders who are primarily on the company dine.

  • SamG says:

The issue QR seems to have is their aircraft do not have enough J seats for LHR. Booking at short notice it’s often much more expensive than Emirates etc or just full, so they’re missing out on a lot of business traveller demand. I am surprised the solution is to add more flights – as others have said their facilities at T4 will not handle this, they’ll presumably use some other check in desks too in the morning & re think the lounge arrangements at that time too

I flew into T4 the other morning at 7am and immigration for non e-gate eligible folks looked horrendous – lots of the long haulers arrive around then

    • Paul says:

Very few of their aircraft have more than 50 seats in J but this is almost certainly a deliberate policy both to keep fares high and quality higher. I’d be surprised to see QR move to a BA model of high levels of premium seating.

      • Tom says:

I think there’s a good chance when QR eventually gets the 77X they create a variant with F and a lot more J that flies on certain routes (London, Paris, US, Australia). The demand is there, it’s not like QR isn’t already managing a ridiculously varied fleet operationally.

  • Asim says:

I often travel QR economy from London. Although LGW is only a 20min drive from me, I prefer driving an extra 45min each way to LHR as the 777 / A380 seats are noticeably wider (and perhaps have marginally more leg space) than the Gatwick 787s
