News in brief:

Lots of Avios seats TO Cape Town …. few back!

A huge amount of British Airways business class Avios availability TO Cape Town was released yesterday, covering January, February and March.

The majority of dates had at least two Club World seats bookable at the time of writing (7.30pm last night).

The snag? There is literally nothing back in business, except for two solitary seats on 6th February. Even if you were willing to fly back in economy there are only three dates in February back.

Using Johannesburg on the return is better – there is a splattering of business class dates and a decent number in economy.

You could book an outbound with no return and cross your fingers that something comes up. If you have miles in another airline scheme you may also be able to use those to get home.

Emirates increases Gatwick flights

Emirates is announcing additional flights to London, hot on heels of Qatar Airways’ announcement that it would increase its own UK services. It means the airline will operate a crazy 140 flights per week from the UK to Dubai.

It is adding a fourth daily flight from Gatwick to be operated by an A350, Emirates’ newest aircraft type. These feature an updated business class cabin based on its existing seats, although a new cabin with doors is slated for later deliveries of this type.

Emirates’ A350s are configured with 32 business class seats, 21 premium economy seats and 259 economy seats. Premium economy is still new to the airline – it only launched in 2022 – and is one of the best premium economy experiences I’ve reviewed.

Flight times for the new service are:

  • EK70 departs Gatwick at 11:55pm and arrives in Dubai at 11:00am the following morning (overnight flight)
  • EK69 departs Dubai at 5:05pm and arrives in Gatwick at 8:50pm (day flight)

It becomes the last flight of the day between London and Dubai in both directions, adding a useful extra option to the schedule. (The previous last flight of the day departs Heathrow at 10pm, almost two hours before.)

The new flight launches on 8th February 2026 and is now bookable on the Emirates website.

Three hotels take part in London’s Open House Festival

If you live in London then you’ve probably heard of the Open House Festival, where everything from notable private residences to cultural institutions open their doors to the public to look around. This year it runs from 13th to 21st September.

I was moseying around the programme preview and noticed the inclusion of several London hotels, all three of which we’ve reviewed.

The Standard, Andaz Liverpool Street and St Pancras Chambers (ex-Renaissance) and Clock Tower are all offering guided tours. Bookings open on 20th August. Each will get you into areas of the hotels not usually open to the public, including the St Pancras clock tower and the 1912 Masonic Temple in at the Andaz.

I thought Qatar were cutting back at Gatwick – isn’t that the story here: Emirates are filling the gap?

    • SamG says:

The timing is very useful for some of their connections , for example Hyderabad this allows me to put the kids to bed on a Sunday, 4hr connection during my working day Monday and then arrive there Monday evening rather than the early hours of the morning on the direct flight or most other connection options. The EK 10pm flight from LHR is often more expensive than the earlier ones so I think this flight will do well.

    • Rob says:

Probably more that Emirates can’t get a Heathrow slot.

      • tony says:

But if the priority was a very late departure, Heathrow would be out of the question anyway given the curfew rules.

        • SamG says:

Yes I think so too – late night slots at LHR aren’t that difficult to get I believe (or slots generally at the moment seemingly – Qatar, Indigo, Alaska & Riyadh have added flights recently!) but they wouldn’t be able to operate anything later than they do already. This adds an extra departure time which I believe will be popular!

          • Throwawayname says:

I’m sure that someone will be around to correct me with actual information, but my hunch is that the late slots are unpopular because any inbound delay means a cancellation of the return leg due to the curfew. Which is a manageable risk if your plane’s based at Schiphol or Zaventem and you can just cancel the rotation, but not very convenient when you need to sort out the diversion logistics for hundreds of people who’ve already spent the last 16 or whatever hours flying and connecting from across multiple continents.

        • Richie says:

@tony an 11:55pm Heathrow departure flying to the west is ok with me.

  • Thegasman says:

I’m only seeing 18th March with 2J seats and that’s using BAPP voucher so assume all booked or was another teething problem with new booking system.

  • Stu N says:

I benefitted from this, got an alert at 1600 and got on the phone to the Gold Line within 20 mins to change our outbound from JNB to CPT on same date. Agent said I was the third such change she’d done in the last half hour. She also checked the return for me but nothing useful was available. It’s been re-ticketed overnight so all good.

Unfortunately my bonhomie towards BA didn’t last very long as my flight home from London was 90 mins late last night AND ended with a “short” bus ride to the far end of the terminal.Grrr.

They giveth with one hand and taketh away with the other, it seems.

  • Chris says:

Trivial nitpick, but I flew Emirates Premium in 2021, so think the 2023 date might be inaccurate? Good to see something happening at Gatwick with a decent airline, though!

    • Rhys says:

It was officially launched (bookable) in 2022 – although the cabins were flying before then. Did you get the ‘full’ premium service? I thought it was the new seat but economy service until they made it bookable.

      • Chris says:

That actually makes a lot of sense, as it was a decent (narrow compared to Premium if a decade or so ago, but whose isn’t?) seat but phenomenally underwhelming service etc.

They’ve actually done themselves no favours there as it wasn’t made clear it was some sort of soft launch, and was sold as a cash upgrade at the airport (admittedly a decent price) hence remembering quite clearly. As a result, I’ve not been tempted to try it since as I didn’t even find it worth the fairly small upgrade cost… and wasn’t aware it might have improved later!

      • Novice says:

Rhys, are all Emirates premium economy seats and service same across the entire aircraft types that offer premium economy? I have never flown Emirates but family and friends have and they say Emirates business class is not good because the airline doesn’t have the same experience/product across its fleet or even aircraft type. I am thinking of finally heading to UAE early next year and don’t mind going premium economy. Which aircraft type should I be looking to fly the premium economy on Emirates.

  • HayMow says:

Am missing being able to get to London Open House as often as I used to – have had some great behind-the-scenes visits over the years (inside the roof space of St Martin in the Fields, -on- the roof of the V&A, and many more). The two most memorable hotel ones were the Park Lane Hotel (now Sheraton Grand London Park Lane) for its full-size, underground Art Deco ballroom and the JW Marriott Grosvenor House, which we vowed to come back to as paying guests one day, but haven’t managed it yet (though we didn’t so much appreciate the tour starting with a sit-down PowerPoint presentation!)

  • ADS says:

speaking of the The Standard … I saw the logo in Kings Cross yesterday …

the upside down thing just screams lazy advertising people who thought this looked cool … it’s painful, imho!

  • RC says:

If BA slip up again, the trick is to book BA one way in club to CT, then take Norse back in premium on their lunchtime day flight back to Gatwick.
Also check out Ethiopian fares from Oslo to CT: might put the BA junk fee add ins into perspective.
