Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club Rio De Janeiro Avios pricing

Hello! Excuse the lengthy post, I have a 2-4-1 Avios booking next year for a trip from Manchester to South America. Initially booked the outbound online with CV to Santiago using Reward Flight Saver. Booked the return from Rio to Heathrow online when it went on sale benefiting from the low Brazilian taxes of just £18 for 2 in Club!

I called BA a couple of days after this to refund 50% Avios and to add the domestic leg back up north to Manchester and was quoted an additional charge of £18. I’ve since received an email from BA asking me to contact them and it turns out that the additional charge was quoted incorrectly and they now need authorisation for an extra £200!

When booking GIG-LHR-MAN in J online the price charged is 200,000 Avios + £35.44. I challenged BA on this and they’ve advised that BA.com is incorrect and this is an error fare which they’re willing to honour for GIG-LHR but not LHR-MAN which is resulting in the £200 additional charge. Is this correct?

It seems odd to me that the website pricing would be incorrect as I have been monitoring this for the last few weeks since settling on South America, and it seems like a lot of revenue for BA to be throwing away honouring error fares for a known issue.

They’ve offered the suggestion of cancelling the booking and then seeing if the seats get released and then booking again online, I don’t really want to risk losing the seats we have, also with cancellation charges it wouldn’t be hugely worthwhile vice just paying the £200 requested.

It’s not an error, it’s the law. Tickets which START in Rio cannot have any charges added to them.

However, if BA is merging the return with your original outbound (so both are on the same ticket) then the flight no longer starts in Rio (it starts in Manchester) and so full taxes and charge are due on the return.

If the return leg has been kept on its own booking reference then £18 is correct.

Thanks Rob, the return is indeed under its own booking reference. The issue they’re having seems to be with adding the LHR-MAN leg, they’re saying that because it is transiting LHR the taxes do apply.

Presumably you booked GIG-LHR at T-355 before the MAN leg was released? Have they refunded the 50% avios and added MAN, or do you have to pay the £200 first? If so, you risk the booking being cancelled if you don’t pay the extra (or worse, being denied boarding).

Can you still book GIG-LHR-MAN for your return date? If so it might be worth just cancelling the first booking. You may well then get an agent who does know what they’re doing and just get the 50% avios refunded. I did something similar – booked DUB-LHR-MEX then called to add the inbound MEX-LHR-MAN in a different cabin. The agent said the taxes would need to be “recalculated”, so at that point I booked it online while still on the phone and he just refunded the 50% avios so I was left with the much lower surcharges from DUB.

Yes that is correct. They have refunded the 50% Avios for GIG-LHR, and then added MAN afterwards. It looks like GIG-LHR is correct and I can see a 125 ticket number through the app. The LHR-MAN flight doesn’t have a ticket number so guessing that is where the issue lies. I’m happy to pay the £200 but just wanted to check it is correct first? If so I can give them a call tomorrow morning and pay up!

Unfortunately all looks sold out at the moment, even the LHR-MAN leg shows as unavailable in J.
