Forums Other Destination advice France – December

  • Retiredkingsman 2 posts

I am thinking of taking a trip early December to France from the UK to see some Christmas markets/Lyon Light Festival via Train.

I was thinking of a itinerary of Paris <> Strazbourg and Paris <> Lyon.

Just wondered if any others have done something similar or have recommendations for that time of year of other places to go and see.

I was in Paris last December around Christmas.

All I can say is that it felt even more busier than prepandemic and everything was booked up. Plan ahead and reserve ahead.

I think Nancy is a gem, but it is only worth an afternoon — as you’ll be in Strasbourg.

And I think there was a TGV between Strasbourg and Lyon so you can bypass Paris to form a triangle.

While in Strasbourg, be sure to do a day trip to see Colmar old town and Eguisheim, because they’re just beautiful.

Also – it’s not specifically a Xmas market, just a foodie market, but pay Les Halles a visit when in Lyon, to eat all the food.

Re Strasbourg check for the when the EU Parliament has a session there as it takes up a lot of hotel rooms etc etc

I can definitely recommend the Maison Rouge Strasbourg Hotel & Spa which is a Marriott / Bonvoy Autograph Collection hotel. I also second the point on Colmar old town – it is lovely!

Paris – Strasbourg is a particularly fast TGV line and takes you through Champagne, which is prettier in the warmer months than December but still lovely. SNCF do several sales over the course of the year, usually 2-4 months in advance of travel, so it’s worth keeping an eye out or signing up for ticket alerts.
