Most people only choose their seat at online check in so don’t be too disappointed if the plane fills up at that point! (Though it was pretty quiet to and from BOS last week, I don’t think US travel has actually picked up that much yet). I’m not sure exactly what you mean in your last paragraph but you should be able to move your seat up till the point you download or save/print your boarding pass, can’t remember which!
