Old quote from the main site:
“Barra Island Tours was booked up, so Rob booked me with another Rob from Barra Taxis, who was great, could have been a character from Still Game. We even had time to stop at the local community shop (bought some eggs and fish (well sealed)) and then the toffee shop for some tablet. Ask to see the pizza take away ‘shop’.”
“Return flight was delayed by nearly 2 hours, (be prepared!) so instead of just going over the dune to the other beach, at the suggestion of the wonderful Barra check-in agent, we took a wee taxi tour for a couple of hours.
Dan gave a great tour round the island (down the west to Castlebay, and back the up the east to the airport), with loads of local snippets of information, stopping off at a few places to point out things, like where the SS Politician was wrecked, and Compton MacKenzie’s resting place, all at a fair price of £60 for the two hour tour.
The cafe at the airport is closed just now, there’s just a vending machine for snacks.”
“The airport café is closed! They’re renovating the whole airport and it’s shut until then. If you want to hire bikes, tony was brilliant and will drop off and collect for £2.50 so I imagine he’d deliver to the airport. 07931 083856 we had a fantastic meal in Kismul in Castlebay. (Definitely need to book) And after our flight home was cancelled due to weather, Loganair put us up in the Craigard hotel’s flat and we had a fantastic meal in the hotel restaurant. The beach over the dunes behind the airport is stunning. We swam last weekend. It was COLD but life affirming 😉 so, hire bikes, ride to castlebay to eat in one direction and you can drop bikes off there or ride back the other half of the loop and have bikes collected from the airport. Enjoy!”
“I tried to make this my 100th flight; out by one but still really enjoyed ticking it off the avgeek bucketlist! I actually stuck around for a few days, and managed to get weather good enough to leave with a sunburn… I visited Castlebay, did a couple of coastal walks (including Vatersay) and hiked up the big hill: for anyone planning a longer trip there’s some details of all that on my blog: https://travel.straylight.co.uk/?cat=137 (plus the obligatory photos / video of the flights and airport; I got lucky with an extended scenic loop approach to the beach).”
