Others on here will be able to give specific advice on your route, but I would suggest that as far as you can, you practice on dates currently on sale on which you don’t want to travel (more difficult with an upgrade admittedly, but do you have a QR flight already for next year for example?). At the very least ensure you know exactly how many avios your chosen option will take and have it sitting in the correct airline’s pot – BA and QR are supposedly linked, but I’ve had problems paying for QR with avios only in the BA account at the very final stage).
In January and with flexibility, you might well be OK. Your 2-4-1 won’t be valid on QR.
