Forums Other Destination advice Madrid – tapas and bar recommendations

  • 329 posts

    Good Morning HfP Community.

My wife and I are going to Madrid this weekend and I’m after a couple of recommendations:

    (1) Tapas Restaurant – preferably small / family run affair.

    (2) Bar to watch Atletico v Cadiz – ideally an “Atletico Bar” or somewhere likely to have a good atmosphere.

    TIA

Asking for a Tapas bar in Madrid is like wanting a “good pub” in London haha.

You can do two things: 1) just walk around and find a place with lots of people and good “ambiente” (ambience). 2) if you are central you cannot go wrong in the area of Calle Doctor Castelo. Try La Castela, La Monte o La Monteria or any of the many places around there. Mercado de San Anton and all the area around Chueca is also filled with small bars with different vibes.

With your second question I am less familiar but usually Atletico fans will be in the south of town (more blue collar if you want). Can be a little cliche but their stadium also used to be there.

For other places to eat that I can recommend:
    – El Pimiento Verde: a good chain of Basque food. They have a few around town and I am sure they will have an english menu if in need.
    – La Cantina De La Maquina: An Asturian taberna in case you are staying in the north part of town

I can recommend a Tapas walking tour. We were a small group of 6 and visited about 5 different tapas bars with a great guide. We got to try out a number of meals and drinks + some interesting facts.

Just be aware that the very “footballistic” bars are some way beyond mere family fun…!

Resurrecting this – we are in Madrid for 4 nights at the end of this month and it’s about 25 years since our last visit! We have plenty to do in terms of galleries and museums, but would appreciate a couple of good restaurant suggestions, preferably not far from the Prado/Parque Retiro area. We prefer hearty/traditional/carnivore-type food over anything too nouvelle or fussy. OH’s perfect dinner would be a good steak with a bottle of Gran Reserva. TIA.

I think La Chalada (no reference to you!!!) and Don Asador would both fit the bill. The latter is Arg., but even the most diehard madrileños love it!

Orbayo, literally 60 seconds walk away from Retiro. Proper traditional Spanish food in an unpretentious setting. we really enjoyed it and will go back when we next go to Madrid.

Thanks, those look like some great options, especially Don Asador and Casa Julian de Tolosa – “el templo de la carne” sounds exactly what will keep OH happy after being dragged round the Prado and Museo Archaeologico!

@NorthernLass for an excellent steak meal, La Cabana on Calle de Ventura de la Vega which is in your preferred area. If seafood works, then their sister restaurant Marina Ventura is very good too, in the same street.

La Sanabresa does very good, mostly fairly simple/traditional, meat and fish for very reasonable prices. The lunch menu at the restaurant in Reine Sofia museum was quite nice when I went, too, and not too much of a premium for the location (may be a touch more fussy than you’re looking for, but convenient location if you’re looking round the museum and the food and price were way better than I expected).

Many thanks, this is all great – I’m going to make a list of all these as I have a number of trips connecting via MAD over the next few months 😀
