@JaneDoe, south Ubud is good if that’s the only place you stay or you’ll be doing day trips from.

Sthala is in a good location, not too close to Ubud town and easy to get away to south avoiding the traffic.

For beach stays, Sanur and Seminyak are popular places. You can read comments on the HfP review of Andaz Bali.
