The route via which you apply doesn’t really matter, as long as it shows the offer. You will either be approved for the upgrade or you won’t and even people applying via a personal invitation have reported rejection. Some have reported that this is a back door way to get a Plat card without meeting the income threshold but it doesn’t exactly work like that, even if the upgrade is initially approved.
Personally, I’m not sure if it’s an upgrade at all, but that’s a different issue!
