Anyonee noticed within “My offers” section of website a link to upgrade from Preferred Reward Gold Credit Card to Platinum Credit Card?
This seems to offer the same benefits as new account i.e. 40000 MR Points on spending £6000 over 3 months + £400 Amex Travel credit.I received no email but offer shows up from time to time on my account very randomly. Today it is not showing.
Is there any pattern why it doesnot show all the time? HOw safe would it be to use the genric link to upgrade, as I have a screenshot of the offer showing my card number at the top right of the page?https://www.americanexpress.com/en-gb/benefits/upgrade/platinum/
It also came and went for me, just like you described. I think there was an email about upgrading which I didn’t really pay much attention to. When I wanted to know more about the upgrade, that offer was there when I logged in – I think it’s just randomly shows up just like how other offers randomly get promoted. I was just mindlessly clicking next and it said I was approved and what I wanted to do with the supplementary user I had with my Gold card, and then it was done.
The route via which you apply doesn’t really matter, as long as it shows the offer. You will either be approved for the upgrade or you won’t and even people applying via a personal invitation have reported rejection. Some have reported that this is a back door way to get a Plat card without meeting the income threshold but it doesn’t exactly work like that, even if the upgrade is initially approved.
Personally, I’m not sure if it’s an upgrade at all, but that’s a different issue!

Weirdness alert: if you have an ARCC as well as a PRGC, the generic link might not work and it might want to upgrade the ARCC instead.
I received the email after the upgrade, however it seems Amex can stil get out of jail due to T&C below:

If you have an old Plat charge card but a a Gold credit card, you may be able to upgrade to have a second Plat card, with the new one being a credit card. If you are doing this with a view to cancelling after getting the bonus, we are maybe getting closer to the end of pro-rata refunds and you are giving up the better earning card that you may not get back.
No I have a plat credit already .. I’m more curious would they transfer the bonus over for a 6k spend .. my gold will be cancelled as I don’t need both .. reading the t and c I’m not eligible as I already have a rewards card

I think it’s highly unlikely and if they somehow did initially, it would likely get clawed back. They appear to send out to these upgrade ‘invitations’ very regularly to lots of people even if they aren’t ultimately eligible.
Anything is possible with Amex IT.
Previously used to get 5000 MR points for adding supplemetary card this time no show!I applied through the link and received my card a few days ago but can’t see a bonus tracker in the app – is that the same for everyone else who upgraded?
Also, does anyone know if spend on a supplementary card counts toward the spend target for the upgrade offer?

This – I had ARCC and PRG, then last year when they were offering 100k to upgrade Gold to Plat (same as for new customers), it wouldn’t upgrade the Gold, only ARCC – still gave me the points though.
