It’s always been the case that you need to book direct to get the main benefits like points and night credits. Some properties will give upgrades and free breakfasts with a BAH, but that’s at their discretion.
For future reference consider a hire car, or you can also add extra hotel nights (e.g. if you need an airport hotel at the start and end of the trip), to direct more spend towards BA.
