Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club 2-4-1 to Australia

Forgive me if I ask silly questions…..
We will be going to Australia from 1 Nov 2023 – 10 April 2024 but as we all know, prices are ridiculous right now. Getting a 2-4-1 I know is not really possible but Seatspy have been telling me that the return leg from Sydney to London is available. Is it a silly idea to book this return leg (if I was able to) and find another way of getting there?
I know paying for return flights is usually much more economical. We want to go business by the way.
I’m trying to find out the best way to do this and am flexible with airlines although prefer One World alliance.
Should I hang on at the moment for any deals that are due to come up? Or is it the case of ‘book now’ for best prices?
We prefer LON-BRIS-PERTH-LON but are very flexible and have looked at prices from OSLO etc but still very expensive.
I thought maybe someone might have some good ideas?!! Thank you

We have just come back from Australia. I looked hard for cheap business class flights from all over Europe. Eventually my husband said he’d like to go to Vietnam on the way. We booked a multi carrier one world redemption. It is an effort to pull together but worked out really well for us.
I think you should be able to search for my old comments. But feel free to ask further questions

@ZoeB – thank you for this. In the past I have always done round the world tickets which have been less expensive. I really wanted to go more directly this time but if that’s what I have to do again, that’s what I’ll do. I’ll try and search your comments. Thank you.

@Dawn – firstly, have you searched with your 241 (assuming it’s the new-style) to see if any extra availability has been released, including from the regions as that can sometimes throw up different results?

Secondly, you could book the inbound and only be on the hook for (maximum) £35 each if you decide to cancel. Be aware though, that that would probably count as the start of your trip, so you probably wouldn’t be able to have an earlier inbound flight added to the 241 (as far as I know!). Have you checked other routes using avios, such as on Qatar via Doha? Could you get as far as say, SIN or HKK in business then book cash flights onwards?

What about going the other way around, via LAX or Hawaii? You’re planning a long stay in Oz so this wouldn’t eat into your time disproportionately. Would you have enough avios or other airline points to do some of the journey on partner airlines?

@Dawn you mentioned looking at Oslo, but I don’t think that’s such a cheap one these days. Have you looked at doing a double open jaw – I booked QR leaving from Stockholm, returning to Copenhagen and that significantly reduced the price vs a return or single open jaw from either city which were the cheapest of all my searches (the next was Paris oddly, but this changes all the time), so just under £3k which in the present environment I felt was a good deal, half what it was from London, and gets you a load of Avios plus enough tier points to qualify for BA Silver (and two of the four BA flights required if you book BA for the positioning flights). As I’m going on my own, not sure my wife entirely buys the concept of this being a good deal though…

That’s a good idea, am just about to trigger my new 2-4-1 and know the flights are about to come up for the return leg. Means I’d have to come back via Sydney but hey ho.
I’m not rich in Avios so rely on this trip to earn it and go towards keeping my Silver status.
I’ll check into the HKK and SIN side of things.
I also noted good return Business class fares to LAX, the Skip guy comes up with them quite often. Ok, lots to have a look at, thank you!
