Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Executive Club 2-4-1 – UK to South Africa – a few questions

  • Lumps 6 posts

    Hi,

Thanks in advance for your help/advice.

I will soon receive my 2-4-1 voucher for BA, myself and my other half are hoping to visit friends in South Africa in the next 6 months/1 year. We have over 300k Avios so hoping that this will be enough, along with the voucher to travel either Business or 1st Class.

    My questions are:

Is it possible to fly using a 2-4-1 voucher from Manchester to Johannesburg, the return journey would likely be from Cape Town to Manchester?

We are likely to take a few internal flights whilst we are there so if I were to book these when making the original booking could it be done using 2-4-1 ( in business or first) or is this not possible?

I’ve had a quick look at the prices to Johannesburg, just to give me an idea of prices of taxes etc, some flights it looks more expensive to book Business Class, does this translate into the number of Avios required?

When we’re ready to book is it best to ring up BA to sort out the flights rather than online? We can be fairly flexible with dates so I thought that it might be easier to talk to someone whist sorting flights out?

I know that there are a lot of articles on this website but there seems to be lots of rules to follow and I think I could probably get things wrong. I’ve never used the vouchers before and I would like to try and maximise our use of the voucher whilst using least Avios so that we still have enough to plan for our next trip.

    Thanks in advance

    1) Yes, for the same price as London to Joburg/ Cape Town
    2) No – different airlines
    3) Both Joburg and Cape Town are priced at 90k avios + £225 per person each way (off-peak), so with a 2-4-1 return trip you will pay 180k avios + £900 for two of you. That goes up to 100k avios p/p during peak periods i.e. 200k + £900 return for two using a 2-4-1
    4) Open jaw ticket so ring them up and book

Cape Town to London availability in business is quite thin, although if you’re using a BAPP you will get extra availability, so best make your mind up fairly soon if you’re going to travel in busy periods.

Just to add to this I’ve flown to SA a few times using the companion vouchers.
Yes, business class costs more Avios, but it’s worth it.
No, you’ll have to buy internal flights with other operators, but I’ve just bought return flights from CT to Gqeberha that were very reasonable.
There is normally more availability to and from Jo’burg than Cape Town, for peak times the rewards flights are often gone as soon as they are released. Use Reward Flight Finder if you are flexible on dates.

I’ve managed to book flights to Cape Town using the 241 voucher over New Year for the last couple of years. I think we’ve booked in May/June both times, and have managed to switch dates as well nearer the time to more favourable ones so they do seem to release more seats throughout the year if there is nothing available yet.

I am currently in SA and will book soon for mid feb 2025. However I noticed last year that booking mid to late jan onwards was quite difficult (prem and Bus). But this time it seems to be easier and only now for the end of Jan/Feb it has now started to get difficult. Late Jan to Feb seems to be their peak season.

Thank you, I will ring up and book as soon as I can, I’m pretty flexible on dates so I’m hoping that will help.
