My gf and I booked onto a return flight from LHR – Tokyo Haneda for end of June returning 2 weeks later. We’ve been wanting to go for a while and had found availability earlier in the year and hoped the restrictions would ease and are still keeping our hopes up (who knows?!)
However I checked BA flights on the same trip today and only saw coach share with trips via Japan Airlines now available. Does anyone know whether this would impact our 2-4-1 which is still showing all okay in MMB as I was led to believe that we could only use this on BA operated flights?
If BA cancels they’ll rebook you onto the JL flights
It looks like BA’s flights to Tokyo are still not confirmed as restarting. This is due to the closure of Japan due to Covid and then the inability to fly the direct route over Russia because of the sanctions against Russia from the Ukraine invasion.
JAL is still flying but it is actually going west via the USA (so the very long way around).
If your flights are still showing in MMB then BA have yet to cancel. I would keep an eye on it though as you might find the flight is cancelled and they don’t tell you. If they do cancel you have rights to re-routing via any airline (practically that will be via JAL as they are a Oneworld partner. It doesn’t matter that you booked using a 2-4-1 normally only valid on BA metal.
If you already booked a BA flight and it got cancelled they should be able to move you into a JAL operated plane if they feel nice enough that day (it seems they mostly offer a refund returning the Avios, Voucher and Cash which is obviously not what you want).
BA is not operating the route until Nov 2022 so your flight must have clearly been cancelled and they just have not told you yet for some reason.
Btw, as somebody waiting to visit Japan too this may be good news: https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2022/04/21bae68f420b-japan-eases-covid-19-warning-against-travel-to-106-nations.html
I had the same situation with a BA flight to Seychelles booked in CW with 241 voucher. When they pulled the route, BA quickly and with no argument moved us to Qatar airways, in QSuites! (admittedly with a stopover in Doha). QSuites were great!
Thanks for the helpful comments everyone!
The flight was officially cancelled yesterday so been trying my luck getting through to BA to see what my options are… unsure whether Japan will be open by July given recent news and murmurings unfortunately (especially a shame given how most of the countries incl. S Korea around them are openening).
How do you see the extra availability to use the 2for1 earned on the premium BA card? I have read here that it opens us extra availability. I don’t have any status with BA so when do I see it or if I log in and search the seats shown are the extra available ones?

@Derpdev, have you managed to speak to BA and, if so, what are they advising at the moment for cancelled 241 flights to/from Japan?
