Forums Payment cards American Express 2 for 1 Companion Voucher – earning enough Avios to maximise

  • 24 posts

    Hi all,

Inhave signed up to the BA Premium Plus Credit Card to take advantage of the 50000 Avios Pionts.

We are aware that when you get the 2 fir 1 companion voucher, it needs to be used in 2 years. We would be looking to use it for a long haul journey to Asia or Australasia. However, I do not think we’d have enough points for that. We should be able to spend the £10k in the next 12 month so would envisage We would have around 85,000 Avios Points at the end of year 1.

I guess my question is whether it would be better not to work towards the companion voucher now and utilise other credit card offers AMEX gold, BA free AMEX Card to get more points now and then focus on the 2 for 1 companion voucher?

My parter would be able to get the BA free Card and the AMEX Gold.

    Thank you.

There’s an excellent series of articles on this site by Rob and his colleagues which contain masses of information about all the different credit cards, avios and the 241. Also many relevant discussion threads.

As you say, your focus needs to be on building up your pot of avios so have a look at the strategies on this site and go from there.

Bear in mind that Asia and Australia are the most difficult destinations for using avios/241, so you may need to have a strategy for that as well – again plenty of posts on here with readers’ experiences and tips.

Just to add, make sure you’re aware of which bonuses you are eligible for, if you’re planning to build up your pot.

And refer your partner when they apply, as you’ll get points for referring, and they get more for using a referral.

Hint: The holder of the BAPP can only get a bonus on Plat, and if your partner went for the Gold and free BA Amex, they can only get the 1 bonus. Also, don’t forget the Barclaycard Avios cards if you want to collect Avios.

Yeah took me a few hours of reading and just about getting it now hehe. Just build your pot and follow these great folks info (like links above). btw have a look at Madrid-Tokyo route with Iberia as thats 119k off peak for 2 people with 241 voucher in business class. So a great usage of it. You would have to make your way to Madrid but its a viable option nonetheless.

Thanks everyone. Yes, it’s going to be a steep learning curve. I think it will take time to build up the Avios points based on our £10K spend (roughly) per year.

Should be hitting the 3-month spend on BA Premium Plus to get the 50K Avios points, then I’ll apply for the Barclay’s Avios Plus and get 25K Avios and then the American Express Gold (or vice versa).

    Again, thanks for your help.

As noted above, you’ve blocked yourself from getting a SUB on the gold Amex by having the BAPP – if you want an MR points SUB you’d need to get the Platinum card, or cancel the BAPP and wait 2 years.

SUBs do change from time to time, but I think the current 50k one is offered in you apply from the BA website.

@Northern Lass – sorry, I do not know what SUB and MR means, I hate abbreviations unless I know what they mean 🙂
