I’ve read all the good articles on HHAs and F and F accounts but I’m not able to work this one out. I would like to use a 241 voucher for me and a mate to go to JNB but he has 24000 avios, I have 160000 and my wife has 70000. I think that if I put him on the HHA and book then it will take pro rata from us. Will it be me and him or all of us? He’s a great mate but I’d like to use all of his avios as well as subbing him some of mine.
Can anyone think of the best way to do this?
With a HHA it will take avios pro-rata from all members. Rob did an article the other day on transferring avios – I think you might be able to do this for £15 now?
@NorthernLass, yes thanks, I read that. I might have to suggest he buys more and remove my wife from the account for 6 months. Can she and I still travel on an already booked 241 in May if I do that.
Set up accounts with Aer Lingus. Transfer any excess Avios out from BAEC to Aer Lingus. Move them back after you have booked.
I think the key is to make your wife’s and most of yours inaccessible by transferring them out of BA into avios.com using the combine my Avios feature.
Only leave enough for the redemption. Then it’ll use all of his and whatever of yours you’ve left in the BA account.
Once the redemption is complete, use Combine My Avios to bring the Avios back from avios.com into your BA account.
As I already had a Qatar account I opened one for my wife and will shelter her Avios there then ask my pal to buy a few more and put him on the HHA. Cheers all.
Well, according to the CSA at BA, the Avios don’t come from a friend’s account it’s all from mine, so I’ve juggled my avios around and he still has all of his after I booked a flight to JNB. Having got him to buy more to make up his avios number I’ve now got to get him to transfer his pot to me and my wife at £15 per transaction, doh!
I booked a redemption yesterday for 160000 Avios. I expected BA to debit 140000 from me and 20000 from my OH. That is what they have done in the past. However, they debited 160000 from me, and sometime later in the day debited OH with 20000 and credited it back to me.
If you had held tight, your friend’s Avios would probably have transferred across to you.
Too late now, but what you should have done is moved Avios out of your BA account and your wife’s, so just sufficient Avios was left in your account and your friends to cover the cost of the two tickets. Sorry, I should have made this clearer.
No point worrying about it now. Just be aware next time, and look forward to your trip.
