Having booked an open jaw trip with BA using a 241 (LHR-LAX SFO-LHR), I’d like to change the return date. There’s no availability on that date with BA, from either SFO or LAX. Can I fly back on Aer Lingus (don’t care if it’s to Dublin or the UK) and if so how would I find availability before phoning BA to make the change?
I could wait to see if more BA availability comes up, but then started wondering whether it’s theoretically possible to do a two carrier trip on a 241 even if I don’t go ahead with it.
Given that I booked a flight with Club Suites for the return leg and it’s now been changed to CW on a A380 (the day after I booked), I’d be interested in trying a different airline to see if what they offer is better than CW.
Yes you can mix carriers with 241 redemptions – as far as I know you need to search on ba.com for availability, in the same way as you’d search for BA flights (the exception is Iberia, where you can find availability on their website a few days before it appears on ba.com, but you need to call BA to book those.)
The issue with Aer Lingus however is that they don’t guarantee to release any seats and they tend to get snapped up quickly when they do appear. If you do find availability, you can call BA to make the amendment, which will cost £35 pp, plus any difference in avios or surcharges. If you’re not seeing anything when you search on your new date though, that means there just aren’t any award seats to be had, on any airline.
There are lots of articles and threads on this site about using the 241 on EI and IB.
