Forums Other Destination advice A few hours in Tirana – lunch?!

I’m off on a tier point run on Friday, and IF everything
goes to plan, should have time to pop into the centre.
Any recommendations for special central local places?!

Skanderbeg Square in the centre is where to go. In front of the Opera House there are some restaurants and cafes. An avenue heads south to Mother Theresa Square (5-10 mins walk) and takes you past the Pyramid etc. Hoxa’s house is nearby too.

I like https://artigiano.al/ – they have two restaurants, one in Bllocku, the other has an outdoor terrace.

While the airport bus takes you straight into the centre, it only runs every 30-45 mins. So it is just as good to take a taxi. I went for the bus back, but it didn’t seem to be around so I just took a taxi back too.

We were in Tirana last week. The area around Tirana park and the artificial lake would be nice for a walk and some lunch. We went to a highly recommended restaurant called Mullixhiu for a modern take on traditional Albanian food, and it was excellent.

Perfect tips, thanks a million! (and to @aso40 , will check the restaurant)

Did you pay for the taxi with a credit card, or are things more cash-based in general?

What did the tier point run cost you? And route? I’ve thought about doing – partly as I’d like to see Tirana…

GBP180 (albeit on a Hotline booking) out in Club, back in Y.
I’ll actually recoup the entire price reserving seats for a future flight the following week!

I was in Albania last week (albeit Sarande and Ksamil on the coast, not Tirana) and cabs were all cash.

They also don’t seem to have metered fares (they have meters in the taxis but don’t use them) so agree the rate before you get in!

Conversely, I found that all restaurants were set-up to take card payments.

    Hotline booking?

    Hotline booking?

Booked through a BA staff member, sorry.

The timings would be great for, say, a 36-hour stay, if the flights are on consecutive days.

Please be wary of arrival time due to previous experience with a rental. Anytime during rush hour will have you in biblical traffic. I do not believe the airport bus has its own lane. Local Bimi, a stones throw from the airport has homecooked food and great reviews. Another gem is Cafe restaurant 5miles away from the airport.

We spent a couple of weeks travelling through Albania last year. Cash is king for transport. As others have said, agree price with taxi in advance. We didn’t use the airport but went past it on a number of occasions. The traffic in the area was terrible and could take 90 minutes plus to get to Skanderbeg Square – lots of accidents, road works and police pulling over vehicles. There were lots of restaurants around the Square plus things to see. They all seemed to accept card, but outside the city again cash was needed. Change bureaux on most streets. As we stayed opposite the square, we walked to the Piazza restaurant and ate there many times. Good local food. We liked in particular the grilled vegetable plates, fish and cheese dishes.

Part of my message seems to have disappeared! We also enjoyed the Komiteti cafe/restaurant, which was interesting and worth a visit.
