I’ve got an upcoming business class flight Rio de Janeiro – JFK – LHR – LIS, I land in JFK at 0700 on AA and take back off on BA at 2135 the same day (it’s a all on a single AA booking)
When landing at JFK I know I have to collect my luggage and normally you check it straight back in with AA but given my LHR flight is operated by BA what will I be able to do? will i have to wait until the BA check in opens? Guess none will be open around that time. Had planned on seeing the city as I did on my outbound but that was AA – AA so could check the bags straight back in
Would the AA transfer desks take my bags as they would already be labelled? I’m guessing in Brazil they will label them to Lisbon
Thanks for any help
If it’s all on one booking, and same-day departure, you shouldn’t need to collect and re-check your bags, surely?
There is a bag drop desk after customs and before you fully enter landside and they will accept bags as long as they have been tagged through. Going from AA-BA does not affect this all that matters is the bags are tagged
It’s not actually a check in desk more of a staffer ready to point a bar code reader at the tags and then clear you to put them on a baggage belt.
You can then leave and go about whatever plans you have for the day.
@NorthernLass – yes alexm will have to collect bags as per usual US customs rules.
That’s odd – a few years ago we did GCM-ATL-CDG-MAN and didn’t have to collect and re-check. It would have finished me off!
Thanks for you’re help! Yeah it’s definitely the rules for international connections in the US to collect baggage and then recheck it, maybe some of the Caribbean islands have an exception if thats what you had

There are some airports where it is permitted but it’s very much the exception and not the rule. And it definitely doesn’t apply at JFK.
